Given there's no entry level sub $20K new cars anymore I wonder if it will further drive up demand for used cars in this price range of there'll be a move towards scooters/motorbikes for cheap transport.

Still a few around.. The whole Kia Picanto range (apart from the top of the range GT which is $20,990 D/A) is under $20k D/a so is the base model Rio (only Just though). Im sure there are MG's as well that are the same.

Whilst none of them are what we would call "exciting" they are still fine as cheap, reliable transport with warranty (up to 7years on a few cases).

New Camry prices announced today. Some models up the $5700 more expensive. These higher prices are the new normal. Just give it time.

New DT RAM Laramie and Limited available shortly with the 'Classic' DT to continue. RAM TRX later in the year.

Jimny prices are insane at the moment as well. 2015 ones are asking mid to high 20's. They were low 20's 6 years ago when they were new.

They’re in the death spiral. They don’t sell as many so they need to up the price to cover their costs and make profits on fewer sales. Then they don’t sell as many because now they’re more expensive and priced against better cars and different categories. So they up the prices and on it goes.

Camry will be an insignificant part of their range soon enough.

It’s interesting manufacturers are upping prices at a time when young people’s attitudes towards car ownership are becoming more indifferent.

Hybrid camry is a decent thing, 5L/100km on the highway - I always thought they weren't that good on the open road but that's what I got between Canberra and Goulburn multiple times. Standard Camry does about 7L/100km.
It's pricing was always very cheap when released, only a matter of time before prices went up.
But end of the day 90% goes to fleets.


What ever happened to the people who said cars would get cheaper once local manufacturing finished?
Ironically it's probably now viable to have a local industry with the way pricing is going, demand and wait times.

Imagine if Ford had done something with Ranger / Everest production locally. They wouldn’t be able to build enough at present!

It's still a fleet darling. But with the way sedan sales are going, it will probably continue to drop off. But then again, it's competition is dropping off too. Mondeo, Liberty, Optima etc. So it might end up being the last one standing. The next Mazda 6 is going upmarket and rwd, so it will probably move into the large car class? Will probably not be a direct competitor anyway.

But who knows.

Claims made to justify not continuing support. The locals had a self-imposed price control as they needed to keep sales up to keep the factories running. This then forced the importers to consider the locally produced products in their pricing levels. No local industry, no price concerns and now look at what you need to pay...For example, if the Koreans go too wild the Chinese will step in very easily...and they are already.

They did do an analysis of making Ranger/Everest at broadmeadows. They actually said that when the decision was made to close the plants, that they did evaluate whether making them here was viable. Numbers still didn't stack up.

The problem had become the plant capacity of around 100,000 cars a year just can't compete with other plants making 200,000 - 250,000 cars a year. Makes the production costs per unit so much lower.

And by that time Thailand, Argentina and South Africa were already building them, so it would have just stolen production from them.

The decision should have been made before the T6 was released in 2011, but at that stage (decision would have been made around 2008?) the world was in the grip of the GFC, and the other great white hope of saving broadmeadows, the Global RWD program, was still in the planning stage before it was axed. And no one saw medium truck sales exploding in the next decade.

The timing was just all wrong. It is a shame though. With all design and engineering happening here, it should have been built here as well. The horse had already bolted by that stage.

Ironically the prototype Ranger/Everests are hand built at Broady.

The FTA with Thailand and the levy they slapped on cars specifically killing importation of Territory still burns me up...made it BMW X5 price.

Doubt it ,it’s been a huge success ,and Toyota sells every one it brings in...with waiting lists for hybrids up to 4 months,depending on trim and colour .

The graphical statistics for February are finally available in the Tech portal.

This will probably be the last time these are posted here as we no longer have access to the data files from VFACTs.

I'd like to thank a fellow member (Chris) for assisting us with these over the last 14 months after the closure of AutoNews despite him actually being in a Toyota dealership!

It's been much appreciated but unless someone else has access and can provide the raw data, this will be the end of them on this forum after 17 years; 417 articles and 12,889 charts /graphs.
