Carve them out of Hebel AAC Blocks. [autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC)]

Use normal hand saws etc.

how big are the pieces to be ?
how age safe as well ?
how much budget ?
are they going to be moveable by lifting or on casters/rollers

the board is easy enough
dark and light pavers or council slabs and half painted

budget cheaper the better
bigger the better make an impact
suitable for smart arrse kids who know the game to move

I manage a camp for families schools etc, we have large verandahs and these can be painted.

I am leaning to 150mm PVC pipe but how to make the top pieces has me stumped.

dont want to go rigid foam carving...never works.

think hebal would be too heavy.

Hebel is not heavy.

But if you want to use PVC pipe;

OR from Foamboard

Make your own Giant Outdoor Chess Set

If you get a chance please try and see it. Brilliant 7 episode series.

Painter Island Caravan Park has a large outdoor chess set. They are always replacing pieces due to kids throwing them around are scumbag takng off with them.
manager reckons its getting quite expensive over time.
