Default Radio control

So this is kind of a general one. Radio control stuff, who has one and what do you have? So drone, helicopter, plane, boat, hovercraft, car etc. So they're all different horses for different course's. But what have you done to modify, what's the likes and dislikes etc? To keep things short I have a 1/10th scale 4x4 monster truck that i have modified. My scale of likes to dislikes are about even.

helicopters. badly. haven't flown in a while but I can just about hover and move around. Calling it 'flying' is probably an exaggeration

the 120 is actually pretty stable and easy. the mcpx is a tricky little bugger, and the 450 scares me ****less when those blades are spinning

Well, atleast you dont talk rubbish on rc boat owners towards their boats not being able to fly. However rc boats tend to float and i dont reckon rc copters do.
I think flying rc anything takes a bit more tallent then non flying things. Hence why i stick to cars, I'd love a off its chops boat but dont have a place to run it so cant justify wasting money.

Smile Re: Radio control

Helis for me.
Haven't flown for years and potentially won't again due to cost.

My fleet included:

SAB 380, 500, 700, 770.
Align Trex 250, 450, 600, 700

Was fun while I could afford it, but due to lack of skill/commitment and repair/replacement cost, pretty much gave it away.

Transmitter of choice for it all is a JR X9503.

Still have the SAB 380 and transmitter sitting in the cupboard covered in dust just in case I feel the need again one day.

If that didn't work, give me some points for trying.
So thats my traxxas maxx with its modified suspension, stock 2.8 inch rims and tyres and its hard to tell, but a beat to crap body on it. Yeah, not going to lie, its a less then average photo. So the last one, well, new body so its orange not red, new other asthetic bits. Rims are beadlock 3.3 inch rims with belted tyres. To be fair i reckon they look a bit goofy, but they perform way better.

Nah i made a mistake, that was it beat up on stock suspension.
The wide arms are green and wide.
The reason i replaced the asthetics i beat up wasnt due to uncoordination, it was more towards the question of how do you test the limit without passing it?
The financial answer ends up with spending extra.
Not the point.
So arms extend track width 40mm. The offset on the rims are ½ inch per side so in total thats a total of 65/66mm track. Im still 50/50 on this thing.

I bought a DJI Mini 2 this year and love it...

I used to own a Tamiya Frog many many years ago that I bought while I was in Japan in '85.

It was fun putting it together by just looking at the pictures, as I couldn't read Japanese...

I ended up putting a Subaru Ute body on it with some spotlights that I wired up using a 4 cell AA battery pack.

Unfortunately no pics from back then.

The dgi mini 2 is a smaller drone but still pretty up there on the inbuilt smarts yeah? Comparing even mid 90s rc cars to current. Its very different to put it lightly.

I bought a cheapy first just to learn how to fly them and it was terrible, plus I couldn't get the video recording feature to work properly.

Then I did my research on the DJI Mini 2 and was blown away buy it's features.

I watched lots of Youtube videos and there was one where the guy used a battery operated blower to try and throw the DJI 'off balance' so to speak and that sold me...

It also records in 4k.

Edit: One of my early flights...

Congrats you got the hang of posting pics....

I used to have similar in stock form, I got annoyed how fragile they really are.
Something alsways broke.
So then I upraded to petrol ones, unreal and fast but even more fragile lol.....

I'll get into it again sooner or later.
Hence why I'm always interested.

Done the heli small versions once, also fragile but fun.

Whats robust fellas or isn't there ?

Suppose i should list the mods ive done to my rc car. So in no particular order. Bluetooth module, gps module, metal axles, extended suspension arms and steering rods, front caster blocks, stiffer springs, heavier shock oil, heavier rear diff oil, longer gear ratio and rims and tyres.
So with the 20mm longer arms and ½ inch offset rims track width is extended by 65mm and add the belted tyres high speed stability is greatly improved. Stock gearing on the gps the thing did repeatable 81kmh speed runs, new gearing it does repeatable 99kmh speed runs. So not the fastest compared to say buggys or stadium trucks or on road, but theyre much better suited to handle at speed compared to a jacked up monster truck. Ive only jumped it maybe 8 foot in the air a few times but never broke it doing that. Its hitting immovable objects at speed where i tend to break stuff, but thats not the cars fault, its my fault.

So a few weeks back my mate dragged out his ⅕th rc car. His story was he bought it off a work colleague 12 years ago, was told it was modified but not how, ran it once and it stopped working. So the stopped working bit was pretty straight forward. My mate had a nitro ¹/10th and assumed so put 25% nitro fuel in it. Turns out its a 2 stroke. So as the fuel cap says, a tank of 1:50 premix the thing was running.
Heres my question. So its a hpi baja 5b.
Its been modified so the stock 26cc engine has a larger cylinder and piston so its 30.5cc. It has a nitrous kit on it. So the googles say they're functional, ebay sells the kits. So my mates bottles are empty. Does anybody know how these work and how or where to get either refills or replacement nitrous bottles. Theyre only small. The internet says, and it sounds a bit sus, that the cartridges for whipped cream makers are n2o and work.
This is mainly out of good sportsmanship. My mate and i have a bet on. Simple drag race on the local cricket feild. So id like to give him the best chance to lose by not as much. Internet also says the nitrous runs out in not too many seconds....

So im getting jack of snapping the chinesium steel axles, snapped another one yesterday. Yes they are stronger then the factory plastic axles and last longer, but they still fail. So i bit the bullet and bought a set of the factory optional steel axles. Yes they cost 3 times as much, but i should have just done that to begin with as ive spent more replacing the cheap steel axles.
Anyhow, i recieved the other set of rims and tyres i ordered today. Same beadlock rims as the aftermarket ones i have on the thing, but road tyres on them. Reason being the offroad tyres are good on grass, dirt, mud and concrete, i do 50 50 concrete and off road. Concrete wears down off road tyres 10 times quicker then road tyres. Wheels take 30 seconds to swap over. And from prior experience, in the dry they arent as good on grass or dirt, but they still do good enough. And these tyres are also belted. Ive been really impressed with the sidewalls and general new found predictability of the belted off road tyres, so once it stops raining and drys up i cant see road tyres being a disappointment. So all the suspension work, over stock it was handling x 100. I should have done wheels and tyres first, because over modified suspension, its handling x 1000.

Another thing i received today was a 27 tooth pinion gear.so i was running a 26 tooth pinion and 46 tooth spur. Goal being 100kmh+ but with that gearing it fell short at 99kmh on the gps. So the 26 only just fits in the housing, and the 28 i have is physically too large. But the 27 was an $11 gamble i was willing to take. It fits but only by a hair. So as the rain held off for a bit, i couldnt help myself so put on the street tyres.
On a quick rip on my damp concrete driveway, goal achieved, at 39500rpm it did 101kmh. I have seen it rev to 42500rpm on shorter gears, but i dont reckon it will with the added load created by longer gears.

Default Re: Radio control

The decent axles i ordered yesterday from victoria came in this morning. Im going to go as far as to say theres good reason as to why theyre 3 times the cost of chinesium steel axles. So, the stock plastic axles and the chinesium steel axles are 2 peice telescopic shafts. Reason being that the work on both stock and wide suspension arms. The new ones are 1 peice shafts, so you cant use the stock legnth with wide arms and vice versa. The new ones, everything is bigger. All the retaining pins and most notably the stub axles. But the kit comes with larger bearings to accomodate the chunky stub axles.
So this part is on me for not doing my reasearch. The stock 17mm hex wheel adapters are not compatible, nor are the stock wheel nuts. So i ordered the correct ones. Not the end of the world as they still work with the rims i have and even stock rims you just delete the adapter ring. And the axles in the car arent broken so i can wait.
So next question is, ive removed the final drivetrain failure point. So every gear in the transmission is metal, already snapped 10 axles (4 stock plastic, 6 chinesium steel) so with what i would like to think are strong axles, wheres the new point of failure in the driveline going to be?

So the correct wheel adapters came in today. So i slapped in the new 1 piece axles. So axles, i can do in no time flat blindfolded with 1 arm tied behind my back.
The ally wheel adapters i got in green as thats my favourite colour. Id really like to meet the bloke who designed them, shake his hand and then kick him in the groin. Its just the mounting system, i wont get into it, but if somebody was going to reinvent the wheel, surely it would have been done by now otherwise we all wouldnt still be satisfied with what works.
The 1 peice axles are quieter. So the 2 piece axles have an outer spline and an inner shaft so theres alway a little play in them. So by noise i mean more of a light rattle when on the brakes or accelerating. The 1 peice shafts are not entirely silent, but pretty close to silent. No performance advantage. But hopefully i dont snap one or 2 every other time i run the thing.

Probs a bit off topic, but we had one of these floating around site for a while. The biggest issue was that our site (mine and power station) is segregated by a public road which caused some operational issues due to CASA requirements.

Drone operation was overseen by Airobotics control centre in Perth.
