Check your brake lights - if one or more of the bulbs has blown, cruise will not work. Could also be a fuse in the fuse block under the panel near your right knee when sitting in driver's seat.

Brake lights generally only effect the car when you try to turn the cruise control off using the brake pedal, and they have this problem when the brake light swtich is buggered.

you sure...?
i thought the same as JC, that it wouldn't allow it to work at all...
had it happen with mine before and yep, the culprit was a blown tail light..

That was a problem with the late EL's and I wouldn't think they wouldn't change the switch mechanism, the globes could be at fault on an AU, they were never a problem on the EL, my late EL used to blow brake globes all the time and it never affected the cruise

Our wagon never had a problem when a globe went but if the brake light fuse pops then the cruise won't engage. The "cruise" icon lights up on the dash but the cruise control won't set.

Deffinately check your brake lights, if one goes, your cruise control wont engage.

I had the same problem on my SR as described by JC. "Cruise" appeared on dash, but "set" would not. Both brake bulbs were blown. Replaced both and cruise returned.

Hi All,

Issue is most likely within the combination switch. The wires get broken for the cruise switch. The wires rub themselves thin at the joint for the blocker stalk. Its an easy fix. Remove combo switch. Resolder broken wire located just at blinker stalk joint.

Chased this one for ages on my car. Its a silly design, wires get pinched at the joint as the blinker stalk gets used.

I know this is an ancient thread, but it may help someone out there

I know this is an old item, but thought I would share my experience and FIX.
The Brake switch was the cause of the Cruise control. Not because it was Broken.
I have an XR8 Manual.
Apparently I am told its common problem for the clutch Brake cradle assembly to bend and also like mine to bend the firewall out, or distort the bracket assembly. If it was common I had never heard of it.

I removed it to have a look also I had another to compare it to, and indeed it was bent and the firewall was also pushed out.
So I took the spare unit to a manufacturer and got him to make it stronger, Also I got a piece of 1/8 steel and shaped it to fit on the fire wall. When it was all in place the Brake-light switch now lined up, and the cruise control worked.
