Default AS Telstar Head Unit

hehe, I just replaced the head unit (h/u) on my 85 AS Telstar today, that was a jobbie and two-thirds. The old school stereos face and the storage compartment underneath in the double din unit come as one piece of black plastic so that required getting a bit of hacksawing to keep the storage compartment but chop off the stereos face.

Then the metal plate that held the back of the old stereo was too far forward so I had to use a drill and a metal cutter to cut that up so I could bend it further back to give me room for the new head unit.

The wiring was dead easy to work out as there are only front left and right speakers (4 wires, brown+black for L, grey+black for R I think...) and power (2 wires) but too bad the old power wires supplied too little current (had a 2A fuse) for my new Sony xplod head unit.

So then it was a trip to tricky dickys for some real wires to run straight off the battery through the firewall, into the footwell. Luckily AS Telstars have a massive rubber grommet in the firewall where the A/C control cable?? goes through and its pretty easy to thread more cables through there.

Had to scrounge around at SoundMasters in hurstville for a spare mounting sleeve for Sonys too, scabbed one for free. Got it for doing a mate a favour but he forgot to give me the mounting sleeve.

Sounds bloody awesome now, too bad i forgot to take photos halfway through - but i kept a photo of the end result. Now I'll have to put rear speakers in but I don't think I'll go as far as a sub :P
