MY stands for model year.

Car makers are moving away from model codes like EA, AU, BA, VT, VE etc and instead using model years. They can add updates yearly and it removes the confusion of model crossovers in the same year which makes parts listings, service manuals and resale easier.
They also often use the year after the current one so if its released now it can be called a MY14.

MY = Manufacture year = Year of manufacture

So, MY07 means it was made in 2007.

Or model year as above

No MY07 does not always refer to when it was made, it is the Model Year, not manufacture year. Ie the VF commodore is MY14

Ok so let me see if i have got this right

2012 FORD FPV GS FG MY11. Means it was buit in 2012 and it is a MY11 model.

2009 FORD TERRI TX MY07 upgrade. Means it was built in 2009 but is a MY 07 model.

Very confusing (for me anyway)

Why they wouldnt just stick to MK1, MK11, MK111 etc has got me fkd

The concept of Model Year as opposed to actual year of manufacture is not a new concept - Ford in the US were doing it in the 50's and 60's.
It has become more necessitated as technology is evolving - back in the 90s, what was the difference between a 94 EF and a 98 EL? 5/8ths of bugger all. Nowadays where every year means a new type of bluetooth and GPS and touchscreen display etc, every year or so there's a new safety standard, then there's new EURO emissions, means manufacturers don't wait a whole 4 year model cycle to introduce new technologies.

MY stands for model year - nothing else.

For example, the 1957 Chevrolet went on sale in September 1956, but 1957 is it's model year. The 1959 Chevrolet went on sale in October 1958, for example.

So if it says "MY12" on a car, it means it could've been produced in 2011, not just 2012.

Yep...our Triton is noted everywhere in the paperwork as an "MN MY11"...it's an MN model (which was made over a few years and is still, I believe, the current 2013 model), but ours is was made in 2011.

It's a simple solution to a problem of long model runs. It also lets people immediately see if the car they were looking at is one that had an upgrade...as mentioned earlier here, "MY07 Upgrade"...immediately it notifies you that this car has had whatever the upgrade was.

MY = Model Year

Example, I have a 2008 MY09 Lancer VRX which means although it was built in 2008 it has the specs of the 2009 model such as the 2.4L engine not 2.0L

it says on wikipedia (i think thats where) that 'it's hard to directly compare car models usa to australia as australian models didn't necessarily change on a regular yearly cycle.'

Hi, I always thought my 2009 territory was a TS Mk11. When doing an insurance quote yesterday the rego came back as a MY07 Upgrade.

My car was manufactured in Oct09 and the compliance plate says 'Ford Territory 2'

How can I confirm what it is and what is the difference between them?

Thanks
