hey all i just bought a 4 door mkII escort 2L from the original owner with 66000 km's on the clock for 90 bucks. I need to get it licensed and was wondering whether they actually came with hibeams because there is no swwitch for them and doesn't look like the reflector changes at all. If they didn't come with hibeams does that mean I don't need to have them?

Congrats,
Yes all Mk2 escorts came with high beams, simply push the left hand stalk (indicator stick on the LEFT) away from you once your park lights are on, if all wiring is in tact a blue light should light up on your dash. PM if you need more help. : |

thanks heaps, I didn't know where the hibeam switch was, but unfortunately they don't work but the blue light comes up on dash so something does exist there lol. I'll get on to it tomorrow (if i finish work before 6pm).

Also quickly has anyone rigged up a return device for the indicator switch, and if so how did you do it?

The indicator has a return cam - it is at the back of the steering wheel. It is common for them to break the small tab that locks into the back side of the wheel boss. You can repair it by drilling a very small hole and fitting a small metal thread - then cut the thread head off, leaving the thread end protruding about 3-5mm.
OR if an aftermarket steering wheel has been fitted then usually they don't have the hole drilled in the back of the boss for the little tab to fit into. There are separate fuses for low and high beam - the fuse box is on the passenger side firewall in the engine compartment. It is very common for the ends to corrode - old Euro style fuses. PS I never liked the indicator on the left on my Eskies so I always swap the multi-function stalks side to side - lights and wipers on left, indicator on right. |

And to me it makes more sense to push the light switch down to turn the lights on - same for the wipers. Try it and see if you like it for yourself ... if you don't it's easy enough put back to standard. BTW the reason I first did this back in 1975 was when I was using my Esky as a driving school car. Learners (and even experienced drivers) would be forever turning on the wipers instead of the indicators LOL. On my current Esky it's so the wife isn't forever turning the wipers on instead of the indicators |

I fixed my indicator cam with a zip tie to make the lump the right size... man those things can fix anything
Try an Escort "expert" cause Tony at ERR just gave me an entire box full of broken ones that I used to pull apart and make a good one free
