Hi i am a nubie and would like to introduce myself. My name is kurt and i am in the midst of building a Mk1 two door Escort. because of the sort of mods i am undertaking i have to change my steering column to that of a collaspable type to conform to Queensland Transport's rules. The question i have for you is, do mk2's have a collapsable column and is that an easy swap, or is there something better out there. Any help would be great.

Yes, the MkII does have a collapsible column which should satisfy the transport rules.
Verify with them that it is Rule 10b from the Second Edition ADRs that they wish for you to comply with - that is the one stamped on MkII Escort's compliance plate. It is for vehicles produced since Jan 1973. If they are using Third Edition ADRs you could have a problem - they are for cars built since about 1990. The only way around this one if they are trying to be difficult is to fit an airbag!!! Then it doesn't matter what column is in the car - you can use the orginal. |

All Escorts had a collap[sible column. It is the convoluted section at the top of the column.
