Default need advice

hey,

i need info about the old mk 2 escorts with the 2L engine, i want to know which is lighter...the coupe or the 4door.
and has anyone got any tips about giving the escort abit more acceleration, but with in a budget.

Coupe is lighter thant the 4 door.

I'd look at the diff ratio, and try to locate a 4.1 centre out of a panelvan if you want more acceleration on a budget. What is the budget??

does anyone have any extra advice on how i could get more power out of my escort-do extractors have any great benefits?
a price range would be good too on other performance parts

Is your car completely stock??
Sports exhaust system, with a decent set of extractors, sports air cleaner, decent tune and rejet on the carby would all help.

A cam change will cost a bit, as the head has to come off to do it.

quick shift upgrade on the shifter can result in faster gear changes.

I managed to get a straight through 2 inch exhaust for my escort for $180. Picked up a a pair of genie extractors never used for $100 from my local trading post so just fit em yourself and then take it to the exhaust d00d shoudnt take longer than a day. Sport air filter for a weber is about $50. Carby rebuild and re-jetted fitted and tuned is about $300. But helps i ya know ppl.

sorry if im hijacking the thread..

is the 2inch exhaust loud? does it drone much?
i too am after more power from my 2ltr and have recently rebuilt carby[new gaskets n stuff], i also bought extractors, just need some $$$ to get them fitted. at the moment, i have 1 3/4" exhaust from manifold to just before rear muffler, where it steps upto 2 1/4" pipe. so im thinking 2" pipe from extractors to muffler, just not sure if thats gonna be too big though. im also looking at new air cleaner assembly.

In response to your "hi-jacking" of the the thread. The 2 inch gives a nice sounding note at high revs, but is very suitable for day to day driving and doesnt draw to much attention unless you put your foot down. People often opt for the 2 1/4 inch and for those with a bit of engine work a 2 1/2 inch.

I've always found the 2 litre cortinas that I've wrecked all had the same size weber carby as the 2 litre escort.

V6 capri's on the other hand had a slightly bigger weber carby.

In response to the exhaust size. If there is a fair amount of engine work done then 2.5" is definately the way to go. I have extractors to 2.5" and finish with a 3" tip, sounds and goes the goods. Does not drone at all and gives it a nice sound, especially with a different cam. Not usually a good idea for this kind of size on a minimal mod engine though.

As far as i know, the webber off a 250 xe or even a cortina fits on the twin barrel manifold, however i think the jets need to be changed otherwise you'll just flood your engine. And as for the exaust, yeah any thing pretty much over 2inches is overkill on a stock engine.

the 34mda is good on a 2lt but it is only good on the fwy,hwy when the secondary opens up the 2lt moves. my mate had on re-jetting done

I had a 78 2 litre two door with 4.1 gears, extractors ($90 in 1989), 2 1/4 inch system and rejetted carby. I never took it down the strip but I could beat my brothers 360 Chrysler (15.9 @ Ravenswood) and my mates 308 HJ (15.6 @ Ravenswood). We tried it many times and I never lost so I think it would be fair to say it would have been good for high 15s with no actual motor work that I knew of.
Hand timed and distance measured with a Surveyors wheel I recorded 15.5 but we all know how inaccurate that probably is.
I got thrashed by a four door from the lights one day though and I have seen others run in the 14s at the strip so they can be made to go alright.
Going round corners though is where they really shine with the right setup.

Make sure your leads are in good condition and on tight and that your fuel hose is in good condition.
