Default EA: What flavour Oil's and Fluids recommended?

Got me a bargain on an 88 EA 4.9L CPI 5speed falcon recently, and as usual, the oil was attrocious.

Might bleed the brakes, coolant and power steering too if i get bored enough... And replace oil+filter, spark plugs, leads, fuel filter, AC re-gas, air filter, wiper blades, do a cut polish and and and and.... I think i've fallen in love with this car, anyway...

Forgive my ignorance but i'm not too sure about the viscosity/brand/flavour of all the fluids and stuff. Specifically:

Engine oil
Tranny oil
Diff oil
Brake fluid (aint it all generic?)
Power steering fluid (generic again?)
Spark plugs
Brake pads (prefferably not crap)

Anyone have and advice or favourites, please tell? :]
Thanks

Yeah i already had a search, it's not real good...

I contenplated reading past the 12th page but i got highly bored, then realised that i knew i'd get bored originaly, thats why i posted the thread.

EA oil fluid tranny transmission diff differential spark plug(s) service lube lubrication break brake leads steering.. no luck

Good thing "EA" is long enough but "oil" is too short for searching :\

Don't drink BTR trans fluid, it tastes like yukky.

I always try to use Penrite oils, mainly because they're Australian, and I've never had any bad experiences with them.

Power steering fluid is transmission fluid.

Brake fluid has a DOT rating, the higher the rating, the higher the boiling point, DOT 4 is the norm these days.

Spark plugs, I just get NGK or Bosch $3 plugs, some people will claim the Iridiums or other $20 plugs are better, but their only advantage over the correct cheaper plug is they last longer.

Brake pads, I'll say Bendix Advance if you want your rotors to last longer than 6 months, or Bendix Metalkings if you don't.

Smile Engine oil suggestion

Hello,

My personal suggestion is Shell Helix Ultra. I have used it in two of my cars (Falcon and Bimmer) and it works well and seems to suit bigger engines with a few kilometers on them. I previously used Mobil 1 but it leaked out the seals on even tight Japanese cars. Helix seems compatiable with a wide range of engine seals and is good value compared to some oils.

Castrol Magnatec: Biggest wear in your engine is cold starts. This oil stays up the top and reduces wear. Properties are superior to synthetic in this respect. Do an internet search for some lab testing on this.

Nulon fully synthetic 15w/40 with either a K&N or Purolator oil filter. Good stuff and seems to stay in the engine longer than others, also the cheapest fully synthetic oil around at $44.99 for 5l at autobarn. Brake pads, Bendix Advance seem to do a good job but Ultimates will be the next I use, either that or those EBC greenstuff ones everyone raves about. NGK spark plugs and Eagle leads seem to be a good combo. Penrite for the tranny and diff and castrol for the brake fluid. That's what I use and have had no problems.

What he said! Go Castrol Trans Max Z for the T5, it is very good stuff. NGK XR6 plugs is what I use they are one heat rating down on the standard plug, and cost about 50c more a plug.
