my fmx is a 3 speed. i believe they all are.
not too sure of cost (i got mine out of a rusted derelict xb i bought for the engine). but my mechanic mate said it was worth 500 'as-was'. it then cost me 1500 to re-condition it. |

Nope not a 4 speed. When hunting for the best auto for my XW I was told years back that the FMX was the three speed that came out in US customlines etc. He told me the yanks dropped them and dumped the rest on us. That's how they made there way into the X series.
This guy I was talking too runs an auto transmission joint down in Frankston Vic and thinks FMX's are a peice of crap. He recomended going for a C4 or C10. I ended up with a tricked up C4. |

There is a 4 speed gear box available but it anit the FMX box cause FMX are 3 speeds, the 4 speeds are from the Mustangs and there different to the 4 speed auto from eseries models..

What have you currently got in it? I'm assuming the borgy 3 speed auto.
If you've got the 3 speed auto I'd swap to a T5 and shorten the diff ratio. If you've got the 4 speed auto (BTR) just stick with that (and shorten the diff ratio) |

Nah I have a the 4-speed electronic gear box... The only mod I have at the moment is my 2.5" cat back...
Shorten the diff ratio you reckon... How much would that set me back? |

Well, you have a few options:
* Sourcing a complete diff off ebay or an FF member, either 3.45 XR or custom E-series EA-ED diff (not EF-EL due to different handbrake setup) * Buying gears suitable for your diff. For shorter than 3.45, Skyline/Pintara diffs can provide 3.7, 3.9 and 4.11 ratios. If you can, make sure you purchase gears or complete diff out of a RUNNING CAR which can demonstrate that the diff is healthy. Changing the diff ratio will greatly improve launch, especially with the horrible 1st gear ratio on the BTR. As for correcting the speedo, a speedo correction kit from Jaycar (do a search in the Transmissions/Final Drive sub-forum here) will do the trick. A speedo cog WON'T, as it stuffs up the shift behaviour of the auto. Since your EA would presumably have 3.23 gears, 3.45s might not make that much of a difference, but it's a nice ratio nonetheless. If you're swapping an entire diff over at home, make sure you (or someone helping you) can do the brakes for you. If you're opting for gears alone and having the centre of your diff replaced with these, shop around for quotes at transmission/diff specialists. Expect an absolute minimum of $300 for this kind of work. Do a search, there's plenty of info ;) |

Havent driven a truck in years, so I could be wrong on newer ones. I know some newer trucks (prime movers) have 18 and 21 spds (all fwds), but he said 15, so yeah anyway. |

BJ The basic FMX was a mid 50s box, as was the top loader, that developed right up to the late 70s. It was also made by ford and BW and probably others. Used in Ford Jag and Rambler and others. Different valve bodies over this time made big differences to change patterns eg Cusso could only use first if in Low, otherwise starts off in second. Some 60s valve bodies had D1 D2 = 1,2,3 or just 2,3. I used one of these in my Street Rod in a late model FMX and also used parts from a cusso box for strength.
The cusso box is a little longer to fit a rear pump, which was dropped in later years. The FMX was used in the high performance Falcons in the 70s as it was the strongest available at the time. It's an out dated and out moded box these days, as is any 3 speeder designed in the 50s or 60s. For resto or retro I'd still use one. The biggest single thing to do with an FMX to stop them blowing up is to get the end play right. |

Allright... Well thats handy considering I (now since today) work in a transmission centre...I did three ATF changes today and took a gear box out of a poxy hyandi...Not bad for my first day....
Exept the stupid commadore ATF sump was stuck and I had to get it loose...I ended up getting covered in ATF wen it came un-stuck by it self when I was right under it.. :( But I had fun. |
