hey thats not as stupid as it sounds. who would do aluminium welding? would it be very costly and would it be strong enough??

cheers

ok so a bit of an update here!
my eb gt boot is on its way in the mail, i got it off ebay for $35 + P/H which was $6.50, so in all $41.50!!

i went down to my local ford dealer yesterday arvo and asked the guy in the spare parts department about it, once again he didnt know what i was on about untill i had to spell it out to him! (dam people only know stuff for BRAND new cars!!) so yeh he finally understood and got it up on sceen, $27 he said, then he showed me the picture and it was the same dam one as what i already had...the jelly one! so anyways i said no thats not the one, the one the eb gt had was a leather look one, not a rubber one.
he then that ford only made the one boot and that the one i had seen was an aftermarket one! dam tool!

so yeh thats why i had to get the one off ebay so hopefully i have it soon!!

the other thing is about cutting and welding my existing gear shift to make it shorter. would it be strong enough? whats everyone think?

cheers
braden

I think it will be stong enough, IMO less force will be needed to change the gears, if it snaps you know you can always weld it back together.
Braden let me know how this goes, I'm considering doing the same thing.

Thanks
Adam

yeh i might just do it. theres not that much force on the gear stick so i dont think it'll snap.

who would do welding for it? what material is it, alloy, metal etc..?

do you think a smash repairs place might do it?

cheers

I did a cut and shut on my 2L esky when I was an apprentice years ago. I think the only drama with the falcon setup is the fact that the gear stick is miles away from where it should be and it has a huge sort of offset to compensate that. Perhaps a short shift type setup would be better? I had one in my esky after a while and again, it shouldn't be too hard to do a simliar thing in the falcon too(raise the fulcrum).

I bought an AU gearstick from ford today, for $38.

I then heated it up with an oxy welder, and bent it to the exact shape of the EA stick.

The only difference now, is that I have a EF/EL/AU thread on the top of my AU stick, and also it's shorter by about an inch.

Now I have all sorts of yummy leather momo options for knobs.

Easy as that. I also could have cut it and joinned it again and made it smaller, but I don't want a short short shifter. The AU is short enough. I'll post pics soon.

at one stage all i ever did, long before i had a tig welder at home, was cut a section out my stick, then drill the ends out of my two pieces, cut a thread inside of the pieces, cut a piece of thread off a bolt, then screwed it in between the two pieces to join them back together... worked a treat, not one problem..

then when i wanted to use a aftermarket gear knob, but didnt want it pointing on a ridiculous angle, i made a complete custom stick from steel, now my knob/shaft is vertical, not angled... <sure to get a smart **** comment here

Cheers Adam

hey thanks for the reply mate.

cost me $41 of ebay inc. postage and handling, just by itself it was $35. i had previously asked at my local ford dealer about it but the guy had no idea what i was talking about and just told me that the jelly one was the only one ford made, but the one i got off ebay came in ford packaging!!

what do you mean about the surround?? its the same one as what came on the car, only thing iv done to it is paint it black to suit the dash and centre console that i also painted black.

cheers

That's a good price Perana.

BradensEBxr6, the shifter goes straight on, you just have to remove and refit the rubber piece at the base to the AU shifter, then the metal bracket around that, and screw it on.

The oxy part is the hardest part.

Here are some pics. Oh, and some updated engine bay shots ;)

Anyone coming to the cruise tonight can see/experience the stick first hand! :P

im still not sure if im just better of cutting an inch or two out of my stick and get it welded up, maybe at a smash repairs place. do you reakon they would weld it up for me?

what metal is the stick? i dont know much about welding so i want some info.

cheers

ok, so i went to Bendigo Sheetmetal and inquired about getting my gear stick shortened.
the guy said he's never done one before but he could give it a shot, only thing is he's not sure if id be strong enough.
also he said id be paying by the hourly rate which is $50 an hour.
im not sure what i should do now as i dont want to pay some guy maybe $50 to do it and it might not work!
so do AU gearsticks fit up to the EB ones? and how much shorter are they??
also what do you pay for a gearstick, like AU one etc??

cheers
