Hi guys
I've bought a set of 19 x 8 wheels, they have 19/35/255 profile on them. The width of the tyres seem to be too wide for the front, as they rub against the balljoints, even when the car is jacked up.. so it's worse when off the jack. Wish i had've taken some photos would've been easier to explain it. The car sits pretty low with my current 18's as you can see in the pic(btw car isnt black, i wish), i'm hoping i dont have to raise the car just to fit these 19's as i'm happy with the ride height. Anyway I'll be having the front ones replaced with 235's (if possible on 8" rim?) which should hopefully solve the problem. They sit nicely at the rear though, but the gaurds still need to be lipped, which i'll be arranging to have done for the weekend. I'll take some pics once there all on the car. Has anyone here experienced this problem? What size tyres are you guys running with your 19's? Cheers Sam |

i'm pretty sure the same problem happens at the front with 245's and bigger on most rims.
i'm pretty sure 235's on the front will solve it

Raising it isnt going to stop it rubbing on the upper ball joint, 235s should be fine though

I have 245 on the front on 17's no prob's.
Didn't you think to check for fitmet prior to purchase? If you are rubbing the wall of the tyre on the ball joint, this is very dangerous.

I think maybe the offset of the wheels could be more the issue then the size of the tyres.

I didn't think there would be much difference between 255 and 245, that's why i'm planning on having them replaced with 235's. But would 235's fit an 8" rim?

im running 19 inch wheels with 245 all round and they are fine. PLENTY of clearence.i think perhaps the offset is stuffed up. i belive i could run 265 at the back no worries. but any bigger than 245 on front would start to become an issue.
i have an ef by the way, and its pretty dam low too.

I don't know if the width of the tyre is the problem, more the profile.
if the tyre is rubbing on the top ball joint (and im visualising correctly what is happening under the car) then IMHO the diameter of the tyre is too big. so if a 235 has a smaller rolling diameter (due to lower profile sidewall) than the current 255s, it would help to fit the 235. If the profiles are the same (and i'm talking in millimeters here, not percent) then you won't gain anything. |

Hey SB4.
My Skyline has 235/45 18 on an 18x9 rim, the side walls are slightly stretched out, but work fine. I think 235 is the ideal tire size for an 8" wide rim....I do have the list somewhere. Oh.....By the way.....What you doing with the old wheels ?? ;)

have a look in the car manual, it explains the suggested tyre size for different types of vehicles (wagon, 6cyl, v8 ). It will display the minimum size you should have on a car and the max width you should have to. I know for a V8 the max on the front is 235 and the max on the back are 255's and thats exactly what i got on my car at the moment. I think the max size for a 6cyl is 220's, not 100% sure. Its all in the original manual that you get with the car. Hopes this helps
Also the max load the manual indicates requires the wheel arches to be folded over or else you will graze the arches if your car is lowered. I had to do it on my car, a massive graze on the front right hand side of my car. |
