in the previous global financial hoo haa I was out of work and offered a job. took it without asking too many questions, I lasted 8 hours and only that long as I had no way to get home at 2AM...job... cleaning out fat flues from fast food joints, literally climbing up the pipe, cleaning scraping fat off as you went, the smell of fresh air as you reached the roof was a pleasure.
I have not eaten a hamburger or fries from those places since, still almost puke when I pass one

Hmmmm, you bring back bad memories of grease traps. Last week doing a lighting run i said to my apprentice im not checking the grease trap room. He has never seen a grease trap. But was keen to. Chucked him the keys. I wish i had never seen a grease trap. They are putrid. The smell gets absorbed into your existance. And its not a good smell. This one is open, so no lid. There is a plank of wood over the centre of it. As expected my apprentice came out wanting to hurl and not entirely happy with the experience. Dunno how i managed to do it, but the light fitting above the trap i installed standing over that disgusting thing, keeping my balance on the greasy plank of wood, and also had to install the motion detector for that room. Everything is slippery and disgusting. The smell, its unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. When i changed the light fitting, i started at 5am. There was a membrane over the grease so it smelt bad. At 530 the kitchen was cooking and once that surface tension broke, it was the worst smell ever.

Today i got 2 phone calls that rank high up on my list of phone calls i do not like. First was from my mum saying my grandpa is likely to pass away in the next few days. The old bloke is 93 and has pneumonia. The next was an upset call from my ex wife. My mum keeps her in the loop with stuff like this. She doesnt deal well with this kind of gear, and i dont really deal to well with her. But to be she had known my grandparents for the past 19 years, and she still cares about my family, i still care about hers, we just dont like eachother. When my dad died she took that news worse then even my sister whos an emotional wreck at the best of times. But what really sucks is i cant even visit my grandpa. Cant even call, he isnt in a state to talk. Its not a very nice feeling.

Just got the word. The old bloke hasnt expired yet, but things arent looking good. That man has been more of a father to me then my dad. My kid even listens to his words of wisdom and looks up to him as a role model of sorts. Just a really old one. To be fair, and this is me on mortality. To be of 1926 vintage, only recently volintarily given up driving, yet still hold a licence, drive (drove) a 2017 prius, able to use a mobile phone, even text. Always take the possitives out of the negatives. I commend the bloody good trot. I wish that i could eventually be like that. Im just rambling.

decided to get outside for a little while and do some gardening.

I had three plants in pots to go in the garden, and three plants to get out of the garden.. should have been easy.

The 'soil' was gravel and dirt that had set to a nice thick crust on top that a shovel couldn't penetrate. No problem I'll grab the mattock. Imagine my surprise when the first or second hack at the ground resulted in pieces of PVC pipe.

Turns out there is a storm water pipe running from the neighbours place down my side of the fence line and it was lucky to be 2" under the surface. And perfectly placed in the centre of the garden bed that is lucky to be two feet wide, limits the planting choices.

5 hours of gardening later I still needed to do a bunnings run to get PVC cement to fix the pipe and buy some more plants to fill the garden and hopefully stop the weeds growing.

I'm not sure why. I was thinking maybe back in the day it was a single larger property that has been divided. And I'm not entirely sure the building that it is attached to would be legal is it is built right up to the fence.

I did consider digging it up and shifting the pipe back to the fence line, then I looked at how much digging was involved and I'll just work on knowing where it is and not digging there again

Ordered some stuff yesterday for a job today and another tomorrow, some specialised bearings and brackets, global supplier with good track record. Selected “collect from trade counter” option and received two emails confirming it was ready as of late yesterday.

Arrived at the depot today, expecting the usual 1,5m tape lines on the floor, 2 people max etc etc. Nope, bolted down tight. Not a squeak, even the reception was locked down. So I rang the only number they have, spoke to someone probably 20m away from me behind locked doors.

Apparently they haven’t yet got around to amending their web order form to exclude the pickup option. I grumbled a bit and they agreed to courier it out today. Would have been nice to know before I planned my work or drove a 50km round trip. Yeah, I hate that.

When my sister rebuilt one side of the house was only 750-800mm from the fence (needed to be 900).

Sure enough the surveyor picked up that some time in the past the neighbor redid the fence and shifted it that 100-150.

Whole fence had to be removed and re-done.

I spoke to the neighbours today (they have been here forever). Always been two blocks, they knew about the pipe on my side and offered to fix it by diverting the down pipe to another storm water pipe in their yard.

I told them not to worry, I know where it is and won't dig there again

apparently there was some history with some of the neighbours and the run off from the drains.

The bolt holding the harmonic balancer into the crankshaft came out a bees dick then sheared

Luckily it's been done at a workshop, as such this is not my problem, every cloud has a silver lining!

I guess a timing belt is easier on an engine stand anyway

Speaking of not winning all the time, I found my squealing noise under boost, airbox to turbo compressor inlet, there's a seal that sits up against the turbo compressor inlet flange that's perished.

Comes as the full pipe - $650, but she's obsolete and no replacement, nor any available I can find at multiple wreckers I've contacted

I can get a second hand one out of the UK it seems.

I really am starting to dislike one building work picked up a maintenance contract for last year. We werent part of construction, but the building is only 12 months old, so from the day it opened ive looked after the electrical side of things. On the handover the foreman pulled me aside and told me it was a rush job so there may be some minor issues. So i didnt think too much of that, initially it was just getting the cbus programmed. Its a nice looking building, but since then every what looks like a little issue turns into a monster. Like today, 1 light in the fire stairs, i wont get into how pretty smart the sensors used are when done properly, but they werent. Every fitting was set different, no 2 looked like they were done by the same person. 6 hours later and now everything is uniform. But the stairs dont conform to the minimum light standard for a fire stairs on sensors. So realistically every second light fitting will need to be changed. If i wasnt such good mates with the building manager, i would palm jobs off to the other guys i work with.

Know how you feel, today went to work, same threatening clouds but thought I'll at least dress some stone ready to go up into the wall for Monday.
Clouds start parting, umm might get to lay some stone after all.
Mixed up a nice half barrow of mortar, bucket it up the scaffold 6m high along with cut stone. Very first trowel of mortar goes on the wall and BOOM, down comes the rain.
