China warns against travel to Australia - JUNE 6 2020 - 4:33AM
Anirudh Saligrama

China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism has advised the public to avoid travelling to Australia, citing racial discrimination and violence against Chinese people in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There has been an alarming increase recently in acts of racial discrimination and violence against Chinese and Asians in Australia, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic," the ministry said in a statement on Friday evening.

It did not give any specific examples of such discrimination or violence.

Asians of various backgrounds have said they have been harassed since the outbreak of the coronavirus, including in the United States.

China issued a warning to tourists travelling to the US earlier this year after some said they were mistreated in connection with the outbreak.

It will be interesting to see if the numbers of infected increase in the next week or so after these protests are done.

Interesting question that. Because the infection rate didn't seem to matter when this took place not too long ago around Australia.

On a side note, is there any indication if the the number of cases of the common flu have also been reduced by social distancing.
Does anyone know of anyone having it in the last month or so?

The epidemiologist who led Sweden's controversial COVID-19 response, which did not involve a strict lockdown, now says that the country should have done more to stop the spread of the virus, according to news reports.

"If we were to run into the same disease, knowing exactly what we know about it today, I think we would end up doing something in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done," Anders Tegnell, the state epidemiologist of the Public Health Agency of Sweden, told Swedish Radio on June 3, according to Reuters.

No new cases in 15 days only 1 active .....we may be getting on top of this over the ditch

A lot of pressure coming on the government to remove restrictions and stick to social distancing and keeping the border closed

Agee, but what may have been better would have been the Chinese govt locking down Wuhan before the virus spread beyond that city. Probably they will do that next time but there's no guarantee. Australia will always be vulnerable to anything that develops over there as we have so many tourists and students come from there. Without them a lot of jobs will never come back.

Yes I believe they are looking to take top spot in the world for the number of deaths soon.

Mr Jair Bolsonaro trying to cover it up and perhaps not have so much egg on his face.

Time to admit his mistake and look after the people.....

Long way to go to get to #1. USA way out in front.

USA:
Total cases = 2,007,449
Total deaths = 112,469

BRAZIL:
Total cases = 691,962
Total deaths = 37,312

Sorry I meant the number of deaths pre day, which is potentially more important to the people living in Brazil. I know that is one of the things we focus on here.

Brazilians may well ask their government how is it Brazil has more deaths in a day due to Covid 19 compare to most other countries in the world?

Particularly the USA which has 1/3 greater population than Brazil

With some of the leaders these days I would be expecting the assassination rate to slowly climb as well...both the rhetoric and actions from the US and Brazil beggar belief at times. Brazil more so, that nutters has been calling it nothing more than a cold since the start.

Mate in the UK was telling me they are counting any deaths that are not obviously linked to another cause as Covid cases. What this means is that, if someone died at home, and they didn't have the resources to investigate, they would just tick it off as covid. Similary, health officials were so scared to enter some houses, they just ticked it off as covid without testing and got someone else to take the body away.
On the contrary, in some parts of Asia, they would only count Covid deaths if they believe that is the primary cause. How they would determine if it's primary cause I don't know.

To emphasise the point made above about Brazil, here is their daily new case numbers compared to the USA from March 1st and for the last 14 days.

Those graphs look bad enough but with the difference in population base, here is the latter charts based on cases per 100k of adult population:

Default Re: Covid 19 -

Only 2 new cases for Australia and no deaths so CMR stays at 1.404% and active cases drop to 445 (6.1%).

No new cases or deaths for NZ so CMR is unchanged and active cases remain at zero.

The UK had just over 1.7k new cases and 286 deaths so the CMR is back up to 14.14%.

Just over 19k new cases in the USA yesterday and 586 deaths sees CMR down to 5.579% and active cases down to 56.3% although the number of active cases is rising.

Other notable points:
The USA completes 22M tests;
Africa passes 200k cases;
Sweden drops below France with a mortality rate of 57.48/100k;
India continues to drop, now behind both AU/NZ with a mortality rate of 3.65/100k;
Ethiopia (180), Nigeria (663), Indonesia (1,043), Argentina (1,141), and Bangladesh (3,171) all recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those is red for a third or more consecutive days.
