Busy down here on the coast. To be fair, when people go for a walk on the promenade, they are pretty well distanced. People walking on the beach ditto.
Within the cafes/businesses, it's closer within a more confined space. Insane to think there's a solid increase of cases in a pandemic and people are spilling out from the infected areas. Now Franco if I were the grand poohbar: shut off all international flights. Quarantine, remote for returning citizens. 40 days not 14 (the word quarantine comes from the black death arriving in the Italian ports, it meant 40 days then, should do so now too, some cases emerge after 14 days). Don't mix quarantining passengers. No sex between security and passengers. In fact, the military would manage it with far better discipline. Adequate PPE. Virus in community? Lockdown the areas for 6 weeks. That would stop it, China style. Economy stuffed? Well, it's going to be more stuffed if you get as infected as the US has done. The choice is the lesser of two evils. Next step: watch and see how infection declines. Then, being the poohbar, retire to concubines.

Oh yeah, saw the sweetest red ZC Fairlane 351 down here in town today, it was absolutely beautiful, all restored, correct period sticker on back window. Red with white roof.
I hope it's one of you guys here on the forums, tip of the hat, job well done. For the kids these will be special memories driving in such an incredible car. If you can't tell, ZC 351 is one of my all time favourite Aussie Fords - full XW GT auto driveline. I went and fired up the XW 302 to pay my respects.

People refusing tests in known Covid areas is the height of selfishness and stupidity imo.

I'd assume the reason why they're talking about 10 day extension on refusal of testing is that they can't legally force someone to take the test. They said with fines that wealthy people will just opt to pay the fine so that the extra 10 days in the hotel is a disincentive to get people to take the test, these are people who have just returned to Australia from overseas so I assume the spondoolies isn't a question. Personally I could think of worse things to happen then be stuck 24 days in a hotel in Melbourne, plenty of YouTube to watch. Daniel Andrews mentioned that a lot of the refusals are from parents not wanting their young kids to do the nose swab but now they have access to a saliva only test. |

Who is paying for the first 14 days? Who will pay for the next 10 days if they refuse the test?
If they are non citizens or non PR's then absolutely turn them away if they refuse the test.

This all kicked off mid March here so why are there still people returning from overseas. (non essential workers)
Why haven't we properly closed the International borders. If these are people who were kicked out by other governments due to not leaving as requested originally they should be hit with huge fines on arrival to pay for their stupidity + 40 day quarantine.

Quarantine costs are covered by the state governments of course, I wonder if people would have been so blazè about it if they had to foot the costs of quarantine? |

45 new cases for Australia (mostly Victoria) and no deaths so CMR drops to 1.353% and active cases rise to 603 (7.8%).
4 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.442% and active cases rise to 20. The UK had 901 new cases and 36 deaths so the CMR is down to 13.996%. Just under 44k new cases in the USA yesterday and 512 deaths sees CMR down to 4.935% and active cases up to 53.4% and the raw numbers are rising. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences. Other notable points: The USA completes 32M; Russia 19M and India 8M tests; Asia recorded its highest daily new cases with 46,789. Only Bolivia (1,253) recorded a new daily high, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

And Victoria 71 new cases!.... Interesting noting the affected suburbs? Mostly “No English as 1st language” areas? And now Qld won’t let Richmond in on Friday for AFL! (Discrimination at its highest, ain’t it?) .

75... fourth highest single-day increase since the start. The worrying thing is this isnt a blip, it's been a steady increase since around the date of the BLM protests (coincidence?).

The English second language types in the hot spots aren't the type to join protests, funnily enough they've pointed the finger at millennials not taking heed of the warnings
At the end of the day its 71 new cases and Melbourne has a population of over 5 million people and VIC is around 6.5 million. Its still insignificant numbers in the scheme of our population. |

Italy, Spain and Colombia make an interesting comparison. They are all similarly sized at around 370M adults but that's where the similarity ends.
Spain and Italy both have more than 600 cases per 100k of population where Colombia has under 250. Spain and Italy both have more than 70 deaths per 100k of population where Colombia has just 8. Yes, there is a big discrepancy in testing; the former two countries having tested more than 13% of their adult populations and Colombia less than 2%. While the lack of testing may well explain the differences in raw case numbers it doesn't explain the low mortality rate because it's not a case mortality rate but a population based one - although the CMR is much lower for Colombia at 3.4% compared to the >13% of the other two countries and more testing would only lower that further. Climate perhaps?

Wasn't it that the virus can't survive for greater than 30 minutes in temperatures over 30 deg Celsius? And sun light pretty much kills the virus on surface? Which is why I find it astounding that the federal government is pressuring the states to have everything unlocked and back to BAU during this period. We are going into winter, it would be wise to wait a few weeks to see the impact. Our northern hemisphere friends are going into summer, so expect to see their numbers drop (if the assumption is right). US is a different kettle of fish, summer or winter they are stuffed. |

and " 'Challenging': More than 2500 people in self-isolation having close contacts traced Victoria has recorded its fourth-highest daily total since the beginning of the pandemic. Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said many of the cases found in recent days were due to transmission across settings because people were still going out with symptoms. He did not rule out stricter stay-at-home orders. " Listen to Mufasa, Simba.

A person near death here gets Covid then dies it's Covid related. It probably wasn't reason for death at all as they are already very unwell. Other countries are not reporting nor even know actual figures, especially in 3rd world countries. The "facts" are extremely difficult to determine. |

The virus survives nicely inside a person at our normal temp of 36 deg and a fever of 38 deg doesn't seem to bother it greatly so I think other factors affect its ability to survive outside the body.

Alcohol and UV can kill the virus, as can dry or humid 'extremes'
So Aussies - have a drink (Bundy OP, neat), cheers to the world and thanks for the hole in the ozone layer ! |

People did that (In Iran??) and several drunk themselves to death thinking it would help ward off or cure the virus.

If you inhale alcohol into your lungs the virus won’t be affecting your lungs for much longer I would assume. Because current year: ignore my post it was just a joke. do not inhale alcohol. Actually don’t drink alcohol ever. |

81 new cases for Australia (75 Victoria) and no deaths so CMR drops to 1.339% and active cases rise to 655 (8.4%). SA recorded 3 cases, ending a 33 day case free streak.
2 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.440% and active cases rise to 22. The UK had 814 new cases and 25 deaths so the CMR is down to 13.968%. Just over 40k new cases in the USA yesterday and 285 deaths sees CMR down to 4.870% and active cases up to 53.7% and the raw numbers are rising. We have multiple quarantine options available yet we fly people in no worries. Sure there is a process but I recall right at the start Scomo mentioning Naru or similar until people are cleared. Makes sense to me, I wonder what testing is done prior to people boarding?

This!
Surely its more critical to catch them before they board, rather than let them spend hours in a tin can with 200+ other passengers. I realise some may be asymptomatic but if people are showing symptoms, why let them on the plane to start with? Perhaps India aren't as strict? Same story with Vic. Many of the cases can be traced back to fly in's, and particularly ones who think the rules don't apply or aren't comprehending the rules very well.
