I think the Swedish people are much more like everyone else than they would like to believe.

Notwithstanding the jury is still out on the success or failure of the ‘The Swedish Model’. Some Swedish people praise Anders Tegnell; some have threatened to murder him.

Unfortunately the growth of far right groups is increasing there as it is in other western democracies.

Funny you mention divisiveness. Im seeing a lot of comments (not just here) prepared to throw Vic out to the wolves now that they are almost alone in trying to contain Covid to their state. Pointing fingers at whose to blame and shaking fists at particular groups. Im guessing most outside of Vic are happy to alienate them if it means it doesn't impose on own personal liberties.

My main point is the title of Divisiveness and how this whole virus construct is to divide us in many ways, shapes and forms. A lot is for our health. But Im seeing it divide us from the strength we are as a country to some degree. That same strength I saw for the Bushfires and droughts not that long ago. Then the BLM protests came in and its really drawn a line in the sand.

Divisiveness is ever clearer now than its ever been and something out there is chipping away making sure the divide is getting wider so it weakens us.

I’m well aware of the existing - and growing social divisions in Sweden, it’s far from isolated. But in the face of this particular event, the population don’t seem to be turning on each other with the enthusiasm of other nations.

It wouldn't have anything to do with general Victorian smugness, would it?

Come on Australia, lets not throw Victoria under a bus!

Lets not point the finger, and get caught up in who's security guards slept with which Covid infected quarantine arrivals.

Now is our time to come together and support one another!

Who will join me in a quick round of kumbaya?

Wait a minute I just checked and there are no Covid infections in my suburb.

In fact there is not one infected person in the great city of Monash!

Someone help me get out of this; Covid ridden, hellhole state of Victoria!

See what I did there?

No infections in my suburb roKWiz.

How quick could you get a ring wall up to protect us from the rest of them?

Cash job!

81 new cases for Australia (77 in Victoria) and no deaths so CMR drops to 1.300% and active cases rise to 807 (10.1%). The NT recorded its first case in 60 days.

2 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.438% and active cases drop to 18.

The UK did some more rehashing of the numbers yesterday which somehow resulted in a drop in the overall case numbers by 30,302 despite the 576 new cases and 89 deaths yesterday. The lower total raised the CMR to 15.504%.

Just over 52k new cases in the USA yesterday and 676 deaths sees CMR down to 4.705 and active cases down to 53.4% but the raw numbers are rising and will probably pass the 1.5M active case level today. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
The USA completes 35M, Russia 20M and India 9M tests;
Asia records a new high for daily cases with 51,462;
North America records a new high for daily cases with 57,826;

Uzbekistan (297), Algeria (385), Kyrgyzstan (526), Guatemala (915), Kazakhstan (1,509), Indonesia (1,624), Bangladesh (4,019), South Africa (8,728) and India (21,948) recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

The hotel debacle just gets better. The security guards were letting out quarantined people to go shopping

And now they are going to spend $6 million on an inquiry, into why the government ignored the feds suggestion to use police and military to do security, and chose cheap shady private contractors.

Government incompetence at the highest level.

I've seen that article before. It is irrelevant.

The FACT is the partial lockdown was designed knowing there would be more casualties early on, in the hope of higher compliance in subsequent events.

Until it's over we can't assess how effective it is. Just because someone has changed their minds means nothing. It's only relevant if they and the people behave like everyone else in subsequent waves.

The claim is the unions pressured the government to use private local businesses. They were appointed without any tender or transparency, got jobkeeper as well as cash in hand. They have launched a secret inquiry to cover it up until the media move on. It is hilarious but I guarantee by the next state election everyone will have forgotten as usual.

With respect you are just some guy on the internet trying to disagree with the architect of Sweden’s response....

How do you know when a government has stuffed up and they know it?

They call an enquiry to deflect criticism

Just read 2 Vics tried to sneak into SA and caught by Border Police - opted to go back rather than quarantine in SA.

Then caught by Police again bogged in a VW Van hours later on back roads trying to sneak through AGAIN.

Fined each a thousand bucks and sent back, but I think such stupidity deserves higher punishment.

Let's keep some perspective here. The spike is bad and it is a joke what has happened with the private contractors but they have put mitigation measures in place.

Hopefully Vic have caught it in time to reduce the impact. We all know this would happen eventually.

Compare that to the rest of the world which just seems to go from bad to worse. Yes if you test more it's not too far a stretch to think you will have more positive results. So for me what you need to look out for is the positive rate of those number of tests.

In good news from here, sewerage testing here has basically upheld the belief that there is no undetected community transmission.
