I saw a news report today that made me almost want to bang my head against a brick wall. It was about ladder safety. Over the years ive done enough site inductions, ohs courses, toolbox talks etc on how to safely use a ladder. Some of those things got as comical as if to say dont do what danny dont does.
This news report focused on some bloke who suffered 'life changing' injuries when putting up christmas lights using an extention ladder, then asked the person footing the ladder to go off and turn them on, the ladder slipped and he fell. The news reporter said wear a helmet if climbing a ladder. That is not a requirement. Dont tell the person footing the ladder to not foot the ladder, and if you are the person climbing the ladder make sure its stable and safe. A helmet might prevent your noggin copping a major flogging, but it wont stop a broken arm or leg if you dont use your noggin in the first place and set things up safely in the first place. Ive worked off ladders for many years and never stacked it. My last work had a tripple extention. Un extended it was as long as a ford ranger. It wasnt fully extended but i did once use that thing to get on the roof of a 3 story apartment block. Not an experience i ever want to repeat. But, ladders, they're not that hard. A frames, dont top step them, make sure the brace is locked. In general if the feet arent all on the ground, work it out untill they are. All that news report in my opinion has done is told x amount of thousands of people that its fine to do silly unsafe stuff as long as you wear a helmet. |

Stonemasons' now have to ring and make an appointment to pick stone. When you arrive, you are required to wait for someone from the office to escort you into the pit. When loaded, you now have to call on the C.B that require an escort out of the pit. This is besides the usual necessary stuff of signing in, flashing lights, C.B, long sleeve HiVis, safety glasses, hardhat, riggers gloves, lifejcket, lifeboat, EPIRB etc etc. Liked the old system to check in, ask where everyone was, observe where everyone is operating ie. side of quarry dump truck is running, heavy machinery working and stay the hell out of their way but due to some dunderhead from Melb, fishing around behind a working rockbreaking excavator and nearly getting clocked. Can't fix stupid.

Talking of unions...
A family member has a good job in the mining sector. The CMFEU rep is trying to shake him down for the sum of $80 per week for union fees! |

Now this is todays frustration. The bank texted me last night to say theyve blocked some fraudulent transactioms on my atm card. So i called up the bank today and confirmed all the dodgey things and they cancelled my card. So yes cancelling my card is the right thing to do, but now the annoyance is for 7 to 10 working days before i receive a new card the only way to access cash is either go to the bank or cardless cash from an atm.
I never pay with cash because ending up with a pocket full of change annoys me. |

Better when your card expires, the new card sitting in the post box and your in the middle of nowhere without transport.

Probably a decade ago my grandmas card got skimmed. The bank called her and asked if she had travelled to the Netherlands recently? She had all her savings in 1 account connected to her card. She got the 5k back. So i learnt from her experience. |

I pay $26 per fortnight for my AWU membership which equates to roughly $676 for year but $80 per week $4160 per year is outrageous, maybe your family member should change unions which is legal and pay a reasonable fee.

Im not a union member. Years ago i did an electrical job in an office of the etu. Or whatever the union thats for electricians. So i wasnt wasting time but it was lunch time so i sent my apprentice off and said 30 minutes is 30 minutes and prececeded to work through. I had 1 other job to get to that day.
The union bloke told me to go home. Eff the other client, call the boss at knock off and say first job the next day was finishing the etu job. Ummmm, yeah nah. Finished the etu job, did the next job and got out 40 minutes early. Dont worry, i dropped the apprentice at a station on my way home that added an hour to his trip home. |

I worked at a certain casino and was the only one not in a union. When the rep turned up, told him my situation, his reply was there is only one of you, so I wasn't worth his bother. So much for unions,,,, united we stand is a lot of crap.

The shop assist union rep would roll up, have of all staff in those shops suddenly became customers and his vehicle was always boxed in usually for several hours. Nasty little bass tards we were

Friggin YouTube/FB vids that say “Watch till the end!” If you make content that isn’t crap, it will be watched to the end :/
Imagine being at a restaurant, the waiter delivers your meal “Eat every last bite!” Eff off!

To my defence, $65 for a pasta thats frozen in the middle isnt fine dining. Even if the excuse was to be the microwave was playing up, thats not cooking. The waiter was a good guy and did inform the chef. The chef was not happy and took my captain obvious statement as an insult to his poor culinary skills. Yeah, i can operate a microwave. I can also boil pasta. I can make stuff to go on the pasta. Nothing good enough to charge money for, hence why im not a chef who should have years of training and experience. I was pretty happy with the apprenticeship at mcdonalds insult, i thought of that on the spot. But if you're paying decent money for something, you should atleast get something average if not better. |

Then no OK card no start!
Seems folk like the benefits of good and safe workplace conditions and better pay, but don't want to contribute, what you get now isn't free, it was payed for in the past by staunch Union members, if they dident have unions this country would have a workforce of Indonesians, Thais, Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese, and we would be paid in "Yen" not AUD. |

Sort of agree with you slowsnake re union achieved conditions, problem was in the late 70s to the late 90s overzealous union execs seemed to change the agenda from helping workers to destroying business through overtop demands of excessive pay for reduced working hours. Most unionists don’t seem to realise that for employers the cost of labour is about double what they pay for actual working time, taking into consideration holidays, sick leave, non productive hours etc

So you think it's ok for a union to charge over $4000 a year for fees... Nobody really minds paying a sensible sum but that amount is an absolute rip off. |
