drag coefficient on the SUV is significantly better than on a ute.

It is based on Ranger - transfer case with dual range electrically activated difference being that Everest is full time AWD .

I actually can't find dual range mentioned anywhere in release but remember reading about it in the buildup. No low range selector on the console or dash pics that I could find .

Ranger isn't a full time AWD though, it says it has an active transfer case like Territory. Seen no mention of dual range but assume it's there as they say it is a Prado competitor off road.

Aesthetically it already trumps the colorado 7 and isuzu mux by a fair margin in my opinion. I'd pay the difference in base models just for that!

For most people the fuel tank probably isn't going to be a problem. Maybe not so good for extended trips into the middle of nowhere. The reality being most people will never do that.

Only thing I'd like is a digital speedo, but it's not really a deal breaker, just something I enjoy having now. If I get a a 4wd, it's definitely something i'd consider. Maybe not a Titanium, but the price doesn't seem that unreasonable.

In a market where Ford was being left behind by the euro and asian car makers with regards to the extra gadgets, it's a huge step forward. On the other hand, for a big trip, I feel the less technology to break down the better!

well thats off the list for me.... Im not spending japanese built lc or patrol money on something built in thailand for 10 dollars labour per car.

even with the fuel econ.

That's not rational in the modern automotive world. It's a Ford factory, it doesn't (or shouldn't!) matter where it is, the quality should be the same all around the world. It's not that it's a native Thai company.

Perhaps more the beef is that Ford is building them with low labour cost and charging high retail.

That's how they work out the numbers on the sticker on your windscreen, they aren't real world figures, most can be achieved if driven quite sedately, new ranger is going to be significantly better than the current model due to a revised erg, and epas. They're claiming 18% improvement, these changes will be in the Everest also.

Doesn't really work like that, where the factory situated determines a lot of the content and engineering. SE Asian markets don't care as much as engine tech or handling hence the Thai built Hondas are crap compared to the Japanese or American built cars.

There are also differences in manufacturing setups, there is much less automation in the Thai plants due to heavy government subsidies of employees. The Japan Civic plant is 90% automated compared to the 50% Thai. you can even tell a lot of the welds are done by hand.

Detailed write up. Sounds formidable and has off road tech as good as a Land Rover.

While expensive, it sounds like it's worth it.
A lot more different to the Ranger than the looks suggest.

Sorry, but you need to offer citation after lobbing a generalization into the discussion. Im sure handling isn't top priority when you live in an Asian city with gridlocked roads.
My ex has a 7 yo Accord Thai built, its the most solid well built car she has ever owned, that's after 2 aussie built magnas which were sensational. Nothing has ever failed or broken on it.

Ha , Funny thing is the company I work for manufactures those labels. I've never noticed the extra Urban part. always thought it was city and Urban.

If they were being built here they would have been $3000.00 more expensive.

Doubt it, marketing sets the price not manufacturing.

This would probably have one of the highest profit margins in the market though, should make them a killing.

Actually probably would of been a lot cheaper as they would need a lot of volume in the domestic market to justify making it here. Importing it from Thailand they just put in the orders they want.

Looking at pricing online it seems in Phillipines where Toyota sell the Fortuna the Everest is priced lower but above Fortuna and well below Prado. In Aus no Fortuna so price is higher to align closer to Prado And becomes in titanium at least the most costly. Overseas markets have a four badge lineup with what Aus call Titanium called the Titanium Plus and the titanium model a reduced feature list

Success or not will depend on potential customers, myself included, deciding on this strategy is acceptable and handing over the coin. At this price I've gone from buy now to not interested and see what happens next year...

I still see the Everest as more a (much better) competitor to Challenger, MUX and Colorado7. But there is no doubt the Everest looks WAY better than the Prado!
