Eight days after the earthquake and tsunami devastated the town of Kesennuma, a man has been pulled from his partially collapsed home.

The Self Defence Forces identified the survivor as Katsuharu Moriya, who is thought to be in his 20s.

Television pictures showed him being carried into a hospital on a stretcher, conscious but reportedly unable to speak because of shock.

The man was found trapped on the second floor of a house and had wrapped himself in a blanket, Kyodo news agency said. He was conscious and his blood pressure and pulse were stable.

He was found a day after authorities said they had ended the rescue phase of the post-earthquake operation and would be concentrating on clearing rubble and restoring limited services.

It was not immediately clear how the man survived in an area where overnight temperatures have plunged below freezing.

I just wish the date and time of these vids was posted so we know when it was taken, you know?

Higher than normal radiation levels was detected in California and Washington. And then the reporter says that the "acceptable" level is actually 1k TIMES what was detected. It's imp to report these levels but kind of misleading at the same time. I'm guessing some only heard the "1k TIMES" and panicked.

It may well be higher, but what type of radiation, what is the source and what is the actual risk? For example, you can literally point a Geiger counter at a granite kitchen bench top and it will register "radiation", so how many granite bench tops are there in the kitchens of the world?

Get used to the media doing what it does best "SCAREMONGERING" and "MISLEADING" the public. Anything to do with nuclear or radiation will be an easy target for months to come and will be blamed for everything.

The Japanese Prime Minister was on Tv a few days ago talking about dangerous radiation levels.... still im guessing its all hype and hidden agendas from the PM himself.

I'd like to believe it's not all hype and hidden agendas....

Does anyone know which countries are there and to what capacity they're assisting in this relief mission and/or search and recovery? Not just waiting for orders to assist but actually on the ground and assisting.

Initial footage showed NZ Search and Rescue leaving NZ with their dogs and landing, but nothing since. Or maybe I've just missed it.

i saw footage of both nz and aust usar teams on the ground helping, and i believe both countries people are heading home in the next few days

The milk from the town of Kawamata in Fukushima Prefecture was collected between Wednesday and Friday, and the contaminated spinach, from six municipalities in Ibaraki Prefecture, was picked on Friday, according to the health ministry.

The top government spokesman said the government will look into the details of the latest case.

Vice health minister Kohei Otsuka said at a separate news conference that if confirmed, sales of the contaminated products would be stopped and they would be recalled.

They also found radioactive iodine in tap water in some areas, but these were below the legal limit. I can understand the apprehension felt by many Japanese regarding the expected weather change tomorrow.

Here’s something I found on that. I’d take it with a grain of salt as the longer this drags on, the more people will try to cover things up.

Abnormal levels of radioactive iodine were also found...But the levels were far below Japan's legal limit, added the official, who did not want to be named.

Assuming people still have a requirement for food and water, what should they do?

What would you recommend Mr Goose?

Cheap again you want to turn this into a slanging match about how wonderful nuclear power is. Japanese Media have reported the article about radiation detected in food and water..... NOT ME.

You keep banging your drum.... stop shooting the messenger and diverting whats being said by JAPANESE media into "what I think they should do."

It is up to them to act on it.... maybe its all left wing media hype, much like fox news....

From now on, your your cut and past news items could be viewed as being just simplistic news items (occasionally hyped up and/or having left wing views). These items are not necessarily your views/opinions.

Therefore, because these news items are just news items, there is no need to feel upset if someone questions the accuracy of these items either, is there?

Restored emergency power to the spent fuel pond cooling systems for units 5 and 6 have brought the unit 5 pond temperature down from 68.8 °C to 43.1 °C and the unit 6 pond temperature down from 67.5 °C to 52 °C as of 03:00 JST.

At least someone's having a win.

"... any thoughts (us west coaster here): could the us and japanese forces, fly fleets of planes into the radiation plumes with parachutes in tow.. in order to redirect and decimate the toxic radiation clouds. leading them farther south??? away from major us cities, and distorting radiation levels to minimal readings?"

Mus be some mighty powerful planes on that west coast.

I think this is a true story - back in the days of nuke testing in Australia, RAAF Lincoln bombers flew through the clouds to collect dust samples so that the engineers could work out how efficient the design was - ie. the percentage of uranium or plutonium that had gone bang.

After the planes landed, techs in moon suits came out to empty the wingtip sample canisters, and the aircrew were told to shower before lunch.
After the tests some planes were cut up and buried as they were too 'hot'.

Workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will release air that contains radioactive substances to reduce pressure inside the Number 3 reactor.

Probably iodine-131 and nitrogen-16 with a bit of caesium-137 maybe.

Ill say it again.... in case you missed it... the same articles are being reported on Japanese media.... The JAPANESE PM has been on tv numerous times reporting the same thing.

Clearly your not getting it, your only here to start some arguement and its not going your way because you dont even have a responce to what i have said.
If you have issues with the posting of media stories why dont you have a go at others who have posted on here and other threads?

Watching the debris piles on the tv with the eye of a hoarding bower-bird, I can't help but wonder about the chances of recycyling.
There's some nice looking timbers and lengths of steel there that should be re-used, but I guess the chances of that are low due to time pressures, though the steel at least is likely to go to furnace.
The Japanese have an interesting attitude to re-use.
A mate was touring around Japan with his Japanese girlfriend in a car and left the fuel cap at a bowser. Rather than buy a new one he just stopped outside a farm paddock where old cars were stacked 10 deep and took a suitable cap. This is pretty much unheard of apparently.
When they got back to her flat he went out for the day and returned to see all the camping gear on the curb.
He asked her if she was upset. 'No'.
Didn't like camping ? 'Oh no, liked camping'.
Don't want to go again ? 'Oh yes, would like to go again'
Then why did you through out the tent and stuff ? 'Dirty now'
(ie. 'used' and should be bought again if required)

The No. 3 reactor is a particular concern because it is the only one of six at the plant to use a potentially volatile mix of uranium and plutonium.

A hydrogen explosion badly damaged the unit's outer building on March 14 and a partial meltdown is also suspected.

Two workers from the plant were rushed to hospital on Thursday after receiving radiation burns from standing in the puddle near the No. 3 reactor with a radiation level 10,000 times higher than normal.

High levels of radioactive iodine have also been found in seawater near the nuclear plant. ......
