On a visit to the stupormarket yesterday evening, I wondered if the Victorian experience was reshaping NSW shopper behaviour a bit. Not many face masks but notably less dithering. No overt haste or aggression but more sense of a purposeful mission - not a time filling family outing.
This latter point meant heaps of unsold cinnamon donuts, now marked down to $1.29/doz. |

If we want to be silly about it, the root cause of all death is living.
In terms of what should be counted for statistical purposes, I'm of the view that the cause should always be whatever it is that caused the premature end of a life so it doesn't matter what might have been going to kill you, the one that counts is the one that does kill you. Thus a terminal cancer patient who dies earlier than they otherwise would have from COVID-19 is a VOCID-19 related death.

207 new cases for Australia and even though we know there were two deaths in Victoria they aren't on the report yet so CMR drops to 1.054% and active cases rise to 2,307 (22.5%). WA recorded 1 while NSW recorded 13 and the balance were in Victoria. Australia also passed the 10k case mark.
1 new case and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.426% and active cases remain at 25. The UK recorded 1,240 new cases and 138 deaths yesterday so the CMR drops to 15.433%. Just under 65.5k new cases in the USA yesterday and 465 deaths sees CMR down to 3.973% and active cases at 51.4% but the raw numbers are rising. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences. Other notable points: Irancompletes 2M, Italy 6M, India 12M and the USA 43M tests; El Salvador (325), Kenya (497), Algeria (527) and Panama (1,540) all recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

All public gatherings, but yes, everyone needs to be vigilant and complacency seems to have no race, colour or creed boundaries. Interesting developments and debate.

There is no link to BLM rallies or Ramadan. But the continuing speculation there might be will not go away for some. The authorities go to much trouble contact tracing to try and keep tabs on this virus. They determined a person attending the BLM rally in Melbourne subsequently tested positive to Covid 19. They believe they already had the virus before attending the rally and did not pass it on at the rally. The infected person worked at H&M Northland. They infected other staff at H&M Northland which started a cluster called "the North Melbourne family cluster". The authorities have been quite clear they can not link any outbreak to the BLM protest. It is interesting because it would seem the infection risk is not nearly as great outside as it is indoors. If the article you are referring to is in The Australian today, "Coronavirus: Black Lives Matter protest linked to tower cluster." That article does not provide evidence for the headline. Indeed it quotes the authorities as saying,” It is not clear which direction the virus was transmitted in. In many cases, we will never know for sure how large clusters began and the order in which the virus spread”.

Wiz and Mechan1k are probably familiar with the Australia Ave/Underwood Rd intersection; chaotic at the best of time.
Today there was a pop-up screening clinic in the park adjacent - utter traffic mayhem! Lost count of the near misses. No traffic control at all. |

Semantics really. It was only pure luck that the gathering didn’t generate mega clusters everywhere. The people involved had good intentions no doubt but were totally irresponsible ignoramuses. Time and place for everything. It wasn’t the right time or the right place taking into consideration the educated risks involved. They could easily have used social media tech to “spread” the word..... not sure why it’s so hard for some people to think outside their own agendas for once. Self entitled.. much.

When you go to the pub you have to write down your name and number and the time you arrived, so I'd say it's probably easier to trace that than random people hanging out in random streets protesting.

But my point was how the media are choosing a fake version of a story to cause outrage with the masses. Selective reporting even. Where was the outrage in May when these ignoramuses protested all around the country?? During much stricter restriction conditions than the BLM protests? Where was all the media "hype"?? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...Australia.html |

Herald Sun "Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton previously said it was unlikely the protesters caught the virus at the rally in Melbourne’s CBD which was attended by 10,000 people on June 6." "The link does not necessarily mean the protesters were the original source of the public housing tower outbreak, which is the state’s largest cluster to date." Alarm bells start to go off when the "story" is only covered by the Murdoch outlet. Sky, Australian, Herald Sun, News.com.au. There seems to be an obsession to want to link the BLM protest to Melbourne outbreaks. Why is that? It just spreads uncertainty, resentment and hate, at a time when we should be working together. |

People who politicise wearing a mask are; funny, sad and bewildering all at once.
Don't get them started on hand washing....

... and I'd have to ban myself if I expressed my real view on the stupidity of that comment.
We are both in our 60's and wear them when out in the few public places we go to (pharmacy and supermarket) given that my wife is recovering from major surgery earlier this year and is thus in a high-risk group with a compromised immune system. I call it common sense - something that seems to be sadly lacking.

It is funny, in USA mask wearers are characterised as being politically 'left', barefaced people are considered to be politically 'right'.
My observation is that such stereotypes only work in the extreme. I live in Atlanta - largely left but lets assume 50/50 - and at the local shops very few wear masks. I have seen, only in the media, extreme righwing people vocalising their opinion to not wear a mask. I have seen, only in the media, extreme leftwing people wearing masks while they (violently) protest |
