No need to if there is a realistic approach to immigration and the the type of immigration demographic required. The immigration rate and temp workforce here is one of the highest in the OECD which is fuelling this rat box style of urban density everywhere across the burbs. There is no well thought out long term planning to suit, just slap it up with 5 people per square metre, take the money and run.... some of our burbs are starting to look like the city . Box Hill and Glen Waverley are a joke with high rise buildings now and they’re even building high rise apartments in the outer East in Knox FFS..
It’s no longer urban sprawl, it’s now urban cancer. Temporary solutions by temporary minds for a temporary way of living.

405 new cases for Australia and 4 deaths so CMR drops to 1.030% and active cases rise to 3,407, 83% of which are in Victoria. NSW recorded 18 and the balance were in Victoria.

3 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.417% and active cases rise to 25.

The UK recorded 726 new cases and 27 deaths yesterday so the CMR drops to 15.367%.

Just over 63k new cases in the USA yesterday and 813 deaths sees CMR down to 3.727% and active cases at 50.1% with the raw numbers still rising and closing in on 2M. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
The USA completes 48M tests;
Asia recorded a new daily high with 64,942 new cases;
NZ overtakes Australia with lower mortalities per 100k adult population.

Kyrgyzstan (977), Bolivia (2,036), Guatemala (4,283) - although some of that was adjustments to previous figures, Mexico (7,615) and India (40,243) all recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

That's why they have their little country holding (read tax write off) so they can pretend to be country folk.
Big hat, no sheep we call them.
Just ask people like Leesa here, that's the way people think.

I like it the way it is, 5mill in the city.
Doing a surf trip with professional city based mates, every idyllic small town we came through they were like "This is paradise, but I couldn't work here," as they were already specialised and the salary/loan burden matched the specialisation. There wasn't the consideration of reducing the specialisation, gaining multiple local income streams, own successful businesess etc. I do notice them realising they can work from home presently though - to an extent. So I reckon there will be after the virus a drain from the city into good regional areas, which should drive values up in those areas (not totally a good thing). In places like the US where the inner cities got trashed on top of the virus, this move is happening fast. Will this leave city living as getting more dystopian as time goes on? If the continued cramming goes on like Whitey said, then that's a strong possibility.

One of the measures that should indicate whether a particular country is getting a handle on the spread is the percentile value of the most recent case numbers and while you could argue what that number should be, I've taken the view that if any of the three most recent daily counts are above the 90th percentile then you probably aren't getting to grips with it.

In South America; countries like Brazil (only just), Chile, Spain, Peru and Ecuador are below the 95th percentile but Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Costa Rica are all still recording numbers above that level.

In Asia; Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Turkey, Iran, South Korea, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Nepal, Armenia Tajikistan and Yemen are all below the 90th percentile while Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, India and Palestine aren't.

In Europe; Russia, Belarus, France, Sweden, United Kingdom, Moldova, Germany and Italy are all below the 95th percentile while Ukraine remains above.

Australia is above the 95th percentile and has been for seven of the last ten days.

People look at working from home as a good thing, in reality it's just shown that if you don't need someone locally then maybe someone overseas can do it.

So you've gone from a pool of 5 million people competing for work to 7 billion worldwide.

In my eyes the only benefit to living in Melbourne is if you're in the thick of the action in inner suburbia close to the hospitality, art and culture.

There's no art/culture/hospitality benefit to living in Dandenong, Sunbury or Werribee.

With COVID19 there's no art/culture/hospitality anyway.

Personally I look at Southbank as prime positioning of you were to live in the thick of it - it has everything millennials could want on their doorstep, Yarra River promenade, restaurants, casino complex, Melbourne CBD across the river, public transport up the wazoo and the south end of King Street a hop, skip and a jump away.

Except Southbank is a vertical prison in pandemic times, nothing is open.

I generally don't like living in regional VIC in normal times, you want a night out you either have to organise a deso, book a hotel or stump up a $175 one way Uber ride and leave your car in the city (then get back to it tomorrow + parking fee)

But with the current situation it's great, but there's limited opportunity to work locally.

There was a big push a few years ago to decentralise a lot of public service jobs. Didn’t seem to really work back then because people wouldn’t relocate from the city.BUT a few who did and saw the benefits of country living as in cheaper living costs ,better food supplies and probably best of all, a casual 5-10 minute drive to work rather than than an hour or more of hair tearing, frustrating city crawling.Probably be better now when people don’t really have to go and sit in an artificial environment to work.

I see the DHHS website has more conflicting advice:

Can I drive my car? Yes, but you should only leave home for one of the four reasons, such as driving to a local shop for food or essential items or driving to work.

Can I get out of the house and just go for a drive?
Yes, however this can only be undertaken within metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, and should not involve leaving your vehicle for any purpose except for the four reasons (shopping for necessary goods or services, care, caregiving or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work or study).

... and further:

I live in Melbourne - can I travel within this area?
You can travel within metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire if it is for one of the four reasons to leave home (shopping for food and essential supplies, work and study, care or compassionate reasons, and exercise).

You should stay close to home, limit travel where you can, and use common sense when travelling – and remember, you should only be out for one of the four permitted reasons.

There is still not much clarity about going to a major COVID shopping centre. The current advice:

Can you visit a shopping centre in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire? If you need to shop, try to shop locally. This will help support local businesses and help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) by limiting travel and reducing large numbers of people coming into contact with each other. Try to go shopping outside of busy hours to avoid crowds.

.. would appear to be (at best) ambiguous compared to some of the advice above and the advice below:

Shopping is one of the four reasons to leave home. Does that mean I'm allowed to take a day-trip shopping away from home? No. You should not travel further than you need to - or spend more time than you need to. Victorians must use common sense and consideration when it comes to their activities and stay close to home when they can. Lives are counting on it.

On the plus side, they have now clarified that exercise, fishing, golf and going to the beach must all be done at the closest available location(s) to your home. The exception is being a 'member' of a sporting club (including golf) that is within the lockdown area, you can drive the necessary distance to attend it even if there is a closer facility.

I think I'd hate to be explaining any of the finer points of any of this to any member of the constabulary on the side of the road.

I used the example the other day that driving to 'our' vet would breach the 'closest available' service as there are several closer but travelling to the same suburb to purchase the particular food we use for them would probably be permissible as that's the closest vendor of it.

The trouble is, they are all nuances and I'll just avoid doing either until I absolutely have no choice.

Mind you; I could equally well argue that I am just out for a drive either way and under the current guidelines, that should be acceptable.

Agree with what you wrote, but quote reminds me of a Kiwi mate I worked with in Perth. One night I got this excited phone call from Rockingham:

"Mate! Mate! I'm it a pust'n broke party! They've got vee suxes up on 44 gallon drums and they're rivving them with no radiator while we drunk! This us great!" He then went on to say rather mournfully, "You know, uts a dying art thus real bogan stuff. Uts like a culture thit us dusappearing. You've just gotta appreciate ut."

Did anyone notice this on the DHHS website?

I am a member of a golf course 30 kilometres away and there is a public course around the corner from my house, am I allowed to play golf at the course 30km away?
If you are a member of a sporting club within the Restricted Area, then you can attend, provided the club is permitted to open under the restrictions.
Exercise is not a permitted reason to leave the Restricted Area, whether you have a membership at a regional sporting club or not.

Last week, the question was.....
"I am a member of a golf course 15 kilometres away and there is a public course around the corner from my house, am I allowed to play golf at the course 15km away?"

I have it screenshotted. Obviously some influential folks were members of clubs more than 15kms away...

The flooding in China is impacting supply chains of PPE to all parts of the world.... including the US. Not sure if we are impacted?

I wonder where our mask orders are coming from. Anyone know?

Just picked up a box of disposable units from Local Woolies. 40 bucks for 50 masks. Made in PRC

There’s a local business making em not too far from me so I’m going to get some from there as well. 10 bucks each , reusable. Remove filter, wash and reinsert filter. Good for multiple uses and locally made.

Franco, my ol man might want to rent you a room at his place, 23 floors up, 3 bedroom apartment, beaut balcony harbour views, 2 casinos Barrangaroo (opening soon) and Star city both within walking distance, across the road to King st wharf food precinct, looking down on the Darling Harbour Saturday night fireworks, Town hall station just underneath, traffic gridlock 18hours of the day. A short Uber ride to the airport to skip the authorities.

I usually last about a week there and that's it for me.

Does yours pass the test? Be aware, there are fake surgical grade masks being sold unknowingly by reputable outlets in Australia.

And a little bit of science.

Vic has ordered something like 1.3m. 200 to 300k arriving "soon". From that language I assume they are coming from overseas. And the most likely place is.....

It would be nice if they were all locally made, but that article doesnt seem like we have the capacity.

$40 for 50 sounds like legal theft. At the start of the pandemic, we imported ours directly from a distributor in PRC. It was through a friend that lived in HK, but his wife ran the factory in PRC (that would make for an interesting relationship ). Turned out to be $40 for 250, and that was when getting cargo space was a huge problem, they had to bid for it on a daily basis. It did come with all the legal documents, and passed customs at the time when they were cracking down on "fake masks", so I assume they are genuine.

Road trauma and influenza doesn't collapse the medical system though does it?
Lets say that each corona case is car accidents instead.
Today there was 275 extra car accidents, 20% of them had to be hospitalised, 10% required critical care, oh and another 3 died.
And tomorrow will probably be the same or worse.
Does that put it into perspective?
