Loss of sales to Kia might help Ford sharpen their pencil on Ranger pricing.
As much as I despise the Ranger, I don't think the Ranger customer is the kind of customer who will cross shop it against Kia Tasman, its the bougie private buyer queen and the Kia Tasman is going to be competing at the lower tier with shit like the Triton and fleet queens like the DMax.

What I love is this was the Tasman concept:

And this is what we ended up with:

The comments from the Kia General Manager are hilarious:

Quote:
Roland Rivero, general manager of product planning for Kia Australia, said “the keyboard warriors have been busy since the reveal”.

“Arguably though they haven’t seen the car,” he said.
We've seen the car, its ****ing ugly, do you even have eyes or are they painted on?

Quote:
“General feedback has been very positive.”

Dennis Piccoli, chief operating officer of Kia Australia said the reaction from previews offered to Kia dealers were positive, and that fleet managers who were “not as sensitive to exterior design” also responded well to the car.
There you go, fleet queen.

https://www.news.com.au/technology/m...aeb258ef9411d2

The only competition I see this thing presenting is on fleet specials, might get some buy in at the corporate level, but then its attempting to compete with Toyota, who has a hell of a lot better spares and aftersales coverage.

Isuzu DMax competitor at best I reckon.

it's just a flesh wound...every other car maker must be laughing thinking we dodged a bullet while the local Kia staff have all booked counselling sessions to help deal with trauma.
Would potential buyers be considered fish-bums or blind?

Apt comparison - British cars are the red headed step children of the automotive industry, just like how the Kia Tasman is the red headed step child of the Thailand Specials

I suppose they had to call it the Tasman; “Kia Kimberley” sounds like either a children’s cartoon character or a porn star.

A positive missed by whynot is the choice of a more local sounding name - none of the usual aspirations to Americana. Although the marketing imagery shown here is very pseudo-American down to the vest, Stetson type hat and oversized barn.

I think a lot of the criticism here is premature because; A) we haven't seen it in the flesh and B) Bradley tank urban assault vehicle shape is the new hotness (not my cup of tea, but still)

As a contrast, this is what Edmunds (USA) had to say about the photos;

Quote:
Looks weird, but we dig it
The exterior design is obviously the Tasman's most polarizing attribute; we can't tell if we love it or hate it, but we definitely know we need to see more. The whole thing looks to have been designed with a ruler — no curves allowed. But this also gives the Tasman a purposeful look. Seriously, how cool is that base work truck on steelies?
https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/202...irst-look.html

And this is what Car & Driver (USA) had to say

Quote:
Will it ever reach the truck-hungry shores of the U.S.? That remains to be seen, but the Tasman sure looks like it would fit right in.
As for lack of dealer network, yadda, yadda, yadda ... you are never going to detach rusted on Toyota buyers from their vehicles in the short or medium term. Why even waste effort in trying? Heck, most Toyota buyers think the Ranger/Everest is a soft toy for cashed up city folk who never leave the bitumen.

I suspect the strategy from Kia is to go after government fleets and city folk who are attracted to the Kia brand. Unlike Ford, who don't have a small car range, or a hot hatch range, the Tasman will be the first port of call for folk who have a prior good experience with the Kia brand. It looks boxy, so it must be a "tough" vehicle. Yummy Mums would be OK with the looks, as it appears to offer a tougher bubble around their precious cargo.

I can see a method in the madness here. I suspect quite a bit of thought as gone into the Tasman, including how some will react.

As Oscar Wilde’s once said: “There’s only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” I think the shape of the vehicle agrees with that statement.

Ford AU Falcon was a $700 million flop | Drive Flashback

Ford’s edgy AU Falcon didn’t exactly endear itself to the buying public.

Derided for its droopy design and questionable styling, the original AU lasted just 18 months before Ford hurried through a heavily revamped AU Series II which addressed some of the criticisms levelled at the original car.

Twenty-five years on and the AU Falcon meanwhile has slowly gathered an army of fans. Facebook appreciation pages and online forums abound, their communities championing the bastard child of the Falcon lineage. A modern cult classic if ever there was one.
https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/f...ive-flashback/

The VT Commodore isn't exactly a looker either but it sold a shitload more than the AU Falcon and its controversial looks, even though the AU is the technologically superior car by far,

You can be good but if you look like a hat full of assholes, thats the thing people are going to remember, and there's an article 20 years after the fact stating it as 'the bastard child of the Falcon lineage'.

The vertical grill is very jeep... The square guards and stance has a hint of Hummer (humvee). If there was a couple of different brands you wanted to steal styling cues from, I'm pretty sure those 2 wouldn't be them.

Just like the first bt50, if you fit a bull bar it's a slight improvement. If you option it with tray instead of ute body, it's another minor improvement but it's still ugly. There's just no escaping that.

I guess it will be instantly recognised.

My brother bought a Mazda bt50 with the 1.9

Recently towed a van Perth - Grafton nsw

The vehicle was not able to maintain a constant 95/100 due to components heating up - he had to drop it to 80 or so for the vehicle to be happy

I am not able to say what was wrong with it as my brother doesn’t admit mistakes. He did take it to Isuzu dealer in Western nsw and appears there is ‘some’ issues with transmission: motor

I m vague but I suspect it’s not the right rig to tow with

Any idea how heavy the van is?

I wouldnt buy one to tow anything bigger than a wind up camper as for only a few k more you can get the much better 3.0l, but if you were just after a new 4x4 that could fit 7 people on the odd occasion and pull and launch a small van/boat/ski I think it'd be a reasonable bang for buck buy with good economy.
They're not a bad looking rig either, now that they've cleaned up the window lines and bumpers.

Our new house is almost complete and we're looking at the cost of having to store our caravan on top of insurance etc. as we cant keep it at the house. The subject of selling it and going back to cruise or overseas holidays came up as an alternative as my Wife has never been outside of Australia.

Right now we have my Mazda2, her Territory that tows our Waverunner and the Prado for the van/touring, it costs us a fortune in rego and insurance as is.

We wont sell the Waverunner as we love taking it up the lake and figure if we sell the van we dont need the Prado and could consolidate it and her Territory into something like the MUX that can take her to work and launch the ski

Resale on the 1.9 would be bad but if we kept it until the warranty ran out it'd be easier to swollow.

It was quite a big van - they lived in it for two weeks
Yeah towing something lighter I m guessing it would be ok
But it appears there’s issues with Isuzu Ute
Again I m vague but that appeared to be the discussion between my brother and Isuzu ute

My uncle has had two Isuzu D-Max's, both with that 3.0 diesel. I know it's fashionable to love that engine, its fans seem to like that it comes from their truck range. And it certainly sounds like a truck engine too, it's never not heard in the cabin, be that idling, accelerating or cruising. Imagine listening to that for hours on end, especially under load trying to tow a caravan.

So yeah, I'd much rather a used Everest/Ranger over the Isuzu stuff.

Agreed. I had an almost brand new MUX as a rental when my daily was at the smash repairs. Had it 2 weeks (was the mid spec with the 3.0) and HATED it. Didnt seem to have much in the way of grunt and I disliked driving it the whole time.

Now that Ive owned an Everest for little while (yes, mines a V6D versus a 4, and I havent driven a Biturbo Everest) Id take the used Everest every day, and twice a day on weekends. A used Trend or Ambiente would be a much better buy.

I've taken an MUX and Pajero Sport offroad and the the Isuzu was the only vehicle I've gotten stuck.
It's electronics are rudimentary at best, it just gave up spinning diagonal corners. Rear articulation is poor, and my BA RTV wouldn't of got stuck as the rear end flexes heaps more.

The 3.0l Isuzu maybe a little agricultural but they have a pretty good name over here for reliability...you here the opposite about the bi turbo Ranger

I get what you're saying, but having owned a PX2 Ranger I couldn't spend 54k on a 21.75 UA2 with the same interior.
If we're going to go older we might as well keep the Prado.

Imagine listening to that for hours on end, especially under load trying to tow a caravan.

So yeah, I'd much rather a used Everest/Ranger over the Isuzu stuff.
The bi turbo Ford is no different, I currently have one as a rental with 6000km in the clock and it’s a dog of an engine just like every other highly strung 4 cylinder diesel in light commercial.
Poor NVH and pathetic performance loaded up on hills and I’m only towing 2.1-2.2 tonne. I couldn’t imagine what 3-3.5 tonne would be like with one of these on hills or with a decent head/cross wind towing a van.
The only attribute is fuel consumption isn’t bad.

As for the Kia we are sold short again and offered a POS engine choice when they have a V6 turbo petrol and hybrid tech in their line up. Another car maker reluctant to offer something decent in this over priced mediocre segment.

I've done nearly 9000km in mine and that's not been my experience. My van is only 1.6t and I barely knew it was there. I know people say that a lot but I'm actually being literal.
It's got better NV and performance than my territory so I'm very happy with both of those things.
I guess it all depends what you want from the car.

What exactly quantifies something as highly strung? Is it something you can measure?

Highly strung would be pushing 150kw and 500nm from a four cylinder 2l.
Similarly four cylinder 3.0 diesels are never a good recipe as far as NVH goes as they are four relatively large pistons in a naturally unbalanced layout.
End of the day four cylinders are only decent in performance applications (motorbikes, high rpm sports cars etc). In everything else they are just a mediocre engine in all aspects.

Sounds like opinion to me.

What does the term highly strung mean? Is there an actual definition or is it just a label given to something when the engineering doesn't conform to existing viewpoints?
