I'm keen on the Kia Picanto GT - there's literally nothing else in that class sub $30K that's manual w/turbo.

Naturally aspirated engines still being around is an absolute joke these days, unless it's 8+ cylinders.

Tas police showed off their new Stinger HWP cars Wed last week.Last Friday plod decided to do U turn in front of another car,Now one less car in the fleet

i was planning a USA trip a month before Covid hit in March 2020. i was
ready to pay deposit etc, then once the border lockdowns started i handed my FG to my son, and ordered a Seltos as tow monkey for my ski, and general running around.

Faultless to date. only the very steep hills on way to the river with a 2.0L 4, verses 4.0L 6, was never going to be as easy, but once it levelled off was fine. nothing broken, no issues, no niggly squeaks or rattles. I Run it in going to Lorne via G.O R. what great way to get to know a great car.

for everyday vanilla transport thats their purpose and market.
Dailys/soccer mums and in the volume market bundled with Toy/Mazda and the likes.
Well run company great WTY.
Some look pretty good but not type of cars.
I'd be hard pushed buying for me (Stinger V6 if any) But if the boss liked one for her duties I wouldn't bat an eyelid getting it.

I asked for, and got, one of them as a loan car when wifey's Sorento was in for a service (my salesman thought I wanted to buy one so gave me one of the demo's I didnt, but neglected to tell him that) for ****s and giggles... For $22.5k D/a it was alot of fun.. Not fast... at all... but I dunno I enjoyed it more than I thought I would...

Parts are the biggest issue.
We had a current shape diesel Carnival that needed a service. No oil filters in the country. No aftermarket option.
This was a few months ago so I'm not sure if it's been resolved or not.
We have a few other KIAs off the road for 3+ months waiting on parts (accident)

It's 14KW down on our povvo spec WS Fiesta but it's missing a cylinder and has 600cc less displacement.

Where it shines is it's peak torque is at 1500-4000 RPM (compared to peak at 4000 RPM for the Fiesta)

it uses about 2L/100km less fuel to boot - that peak torque coming in at 1500 RPM is going to make a world of difference how it feels to drive.

The Fiesta doesn't start moving unless you keep it above 4000 RPM, which can be fun don't get me wrong but when you're cruising along traffic light to traffic light you just want to ride that wave of torque.

Plus it has a nice infotainment system that mirrors your phone for GPS and HVAC consists of a button to turn the AC on or off, there's four fan speeds and a knob for the heater.

It's got the tech where I want it (infotainment and turbo) and it has the basics where I don't want the tech - HVAC.

If that was available 13 years ago I would have bought a Kia Picanto GT as my first car.

The only way it could be better was if it was 100KW/240NM and had six gears

VW’s ID4 is in big trouble in the USA, it’s not selling well and in contrast, the KIA EV6 looks to be better value for those not interested in Tesla 3 or Y.

And some of you people gave me **** for buying a Picanto, see, I was ahead of the game.
Nah, mine was non turbo and not as quick but the car itself makes up for any deficiencies by being able to send it into tight turns and roundabouts without lifting the go pedal.
Franco, you can get that 100kw quite easy im told with a tune.

I think it’s less of a question these days about buying a Kia, more of a question about buying a Chinese cars. MG,LDV, BYD etc.

And 100kw and 240nm and a six speed box Franco takes you to Suzuki Swift Sport 6MT 103kw 230nm 926kg pocket rocket.

The Kia Picanto Gt is very similar in power torque to my 2020 Skoda Fabia 5MT wagon ...70 kw and 160nm at 1400rpm but I tell you sometimes you want a bit more ....and Swift Sport is the answer.

Great buying. I think once they stop selling them in Australia they will become a modern classic. 7 year warranty is very hard to go past and they have great tech (eg Android auto).

Swift Sport is way overpriced for what you get though, needs another 100nm and 50KW to justify that price tag I reckon.

Might look at it anyway but still not impressed.

Cool story Mazda, would have been good like 15 years ago.

Imagine having 13.0:1 compression and making less power and torque than something Ford brought to the market over 15 years ago (Sigma/Duratec 1.6 Ti-VCT)

Maybe we might just get the lame versions of Mazda engines because of our **** quality high sulfur fuel.

I was doing my once in a blue moon browse of Carsales and WTF the new Stinger GTs are in the $70-$80k some closer to $90k range now!

Last I looked they were in the mid to upper $60k

The cheapest part about the Chrysler 300 SRT is the ridiculous buy price - wait until you have to start fixing it

That whole segment is an utter p..s take these days. A base Yaris at $28K is just ridicules, likewise a base Mazda 2 at $26K. That money bought you a Camry not that long ago, or a decently equipped Mazda 3.

The key is it’s light weight.
And
There is a school of thought that the kw and torque are understated.
And it’s got radar cruise control.
I knew I would get you to bite.

What about the Abarth 595 … yes it’s too expensive.

Completely agree - we've passed 'peak small car' - everything is overpriced and under powered bull**** these days.

This **** would never have happened if we still had Falcon/Territory and Commodore.

I totally agree! Having Falcon/Territory, Commodore and Camry kept a lid on prices across the board.

What about the hot hatch segment around 20 years ago with 120 to 140 kw. Holden Astra SRi, Focus ST170, Clio RS and 206 GTi. Polo GTi with the 1.8 turbo.
Then mid 2000s was stepped up a notch with turbos MK5 Golf, Megane RS, Focus ST, BMW 130i 135i.
Now what do we have. Makers dropping these in favour of cross over or car based SUV… hasn’t VW stated this Golf is the last. Wonder if their EV tech is gonna be as troublesome as their ICE abominations.

To give some context, my WRX is going on 20 years old and I want a new car considering mine is approaching 250k and paying a bit more than you like in servicing even though it has been very reliable. Plus it's not very well suited as a daily drive these days.

I've been looking for a V8 but then I'm thinking why the **** pay that sort of money for at best a 5 or 6 year old car when I could buy a brand new Stinger GT.

With prices like this I'll keep the WRX going I think. That clutch replacement doesn't look so bad anymore

Even if its circa 200kg lighter than its competitors, having a boat anchor under the hood and being way off the ball park on figures is like being Chris Hemsworth with no cock - might as well as enjoy pizza, pasta, pavlova and Peroni if thats the case.

As far as Italian cars go, I'm saving that card for my midlife crisis

They do look quite classy , Hyundai/ Kia were really cheap when they first come out in NZ ,now because of back up service etc they almost charge a premium , some of their EV,s/ PHEV,s are quite expensive ,interesting with all their LG battery fires happening the image might be taking a bit of a hammering , at least they're replacing all batteries .....must be costing LG truck loads, the tech in the chemical make up of these batteries is changing so quickly its almost like they're all so keen to get the jump on each other they're prepared to take the risk of them not being tested properly

Some of this Hybrid/ PHEV stuff is quite impressive though take the difference between the straight ICE Outlander 98kw from a 2.4l and 195nm from the engine alone in the PHEV pretty average , but add 85kw electric motor to the front wheels and 100kw to the rear gives you a pretty good torque split and more than doubles the torque to 450nm ....makes for quite a safe set up (on the roads we drive) and a bit of boogie in an SUV

Trouble is the price is 17K more for the PHEV
