Quite a normal practice of rafting up in the US Canada and med/Europe, sometime alongside or as shown stern aside to form the circle.
Frowned upto here due to our crap public moorings not being strong enough to support the combined weight of several yachts.

Looks to me the two yacht in the lower with anchors deployed were the first one there, then others have joined them for the pic. If its a tridal river or glade I would imagine two others on the opposite side would have their anchors set as well.

Most likely photo taken by a drone camera

Like roKWiz said, not much of a story behind it. A popular way of rafting up for groups/rally's in NA, my friend that took the photo is on the boat directly to the right of the dark hulled one, she's using a drone.

@roKWiz, there is 6 + anchors out, 3 or 4 each on opposing sides, can't see any on the left of the picture cause the tides running to the left so will be pretty much hanging straight up and down......

We did try this about 20 years ago on Lake Macquarie when i had my old Bene 38, there was another 12 boats i think and it didn't go well at all, it was like trying to heard cats while everyone including the cats are under the influence, chipped gelcoat everywhere

If the weathers ok they can sit like that for days, nearly all have there own tender (dingy) so can head ashore anytime they want.

Trust me there is no shortage of booze on them boats

Yep, Lake Macquarie isn't the best place to try even where places like Belmont receive little tidal movement. can be a very nasty piece of water in there, shallow but can start to blow hard fast.

See quite a few flybridge cruisers try it on the Hawkesbury but by the time they start to form up the tide and wind will work against them.

Couple of Lake Macquarie storms we went through at the time got me thinking about the 2007 "Pasher Bulker" storm.

Trust me the conditions were not a problem, It was like a millpond that day, to many Captains and to much lubrication....

I did time in the Navy, and a few of us flew to Sydney to meet one of the frigates in July 2007. We then sailed up to Newcastle and I think every shop in town was selling memorabilia on this.

Motorola V3 days. So quality isn't too flash.
