Yep I remember my Mum wishing she had enough money to buy a Mercedes, she never did, when I bought our first one I took her out to lunch in it, couldn't wipe the smile off her face for a year after I reckon, she felt like she was queen muck of the muck house, as she used to say.

…Gouging on the Tas ferry fares. Walk-up fare (no cabin) $263 tonight northbound vs $109 on Wednesday. Taking vehicles, it doesn’t come down to a sane level until early May. I paid $329 to sail on 18th December and now would be looking at $640 today or $551 tomorrow (one person plus car).

It gives a strong impression the operator is not consistently distributing government funding they’re receiving to subsidise fares. If they keep it up I won’t be surprised to see sales drop.

Are all fares the same or do they run different price stages akin to what airlines do, where there are a certain number of fares available at a discount price, a certain number at the next price bracket, etc?

Could explain the variability of prices.

I’m not on their spam list so can’t comment conclusively - but it seems the only time advertised fares come down without much warning, is for walk-up passengers a few hours prior to sailing.

Ferry prices comes down to demand & season, if you can book far ahead that is where you will save, last minute bookings will hit you in the wallet.
When online I've seen price fluctuations in matter of hours.

Always do price searching for air tickets etc in private mode.
The algorithms can't track your history searches and bump up the prices.

Wait until seasonal pricing starts happening at batching plants and your 32MPa is suddenly $1100/m.

I stand to be corrected, but my understanding of the airlines fare structure is that they allocate a certain number of seats at staged pricing. That's the reason it appears as tho the further ahead you book, the less you are likely to pay. But it's no guarantee. Once the allocated number of seats are exhausted at the lowest level, the next level become available. It is possible, but not likely, especially on popular routes, that you can still snag a cheap fare at short notice.

That's the reason airlines are accused of jacking up prices once a destination becomes high demand for a short period of time: the majority of the cheap fares are already exhausted, so only the higher fares are available. Then people complain.

It's a marketing technique. You advertise seats starting at the lower price, but only have limited numbers as if you were to sell the whole planes allocation at that price, you'd be operating at a loss. The remaining seats are at higher price, covering your losses for the lower cost fares, but you still get people looking and buying.

I know if I book a airfare during peak tourist times I pay through the nose, if I book in non peak tourist times I can get some cheaper fares.

If I want to go to Los Angeles today I can get airfares from $1500, but if I want to go in July its $2600, October it back to under $2000 and down to $1500 again in November, same flight, same carrier, just different dates

Which relates to my comments; return transit on the ferry is dearer than your cited airfares. So the incentive would be for people to holiday abroad and not spend in Australia. My understanding of the government subsidy for the ferry was that it intended making travel more affordable.

I'm not really sure if that proves anything or not?

This article (worth a read for anyone who buys tickets regularly) supports my understanding of one factor having an impact upon airline fare pricing.

Quote:
Airlines will make a certain number of seats available in each booking class, and as the lower booking classes sell out, only higher fares are available. On some routes, though, airlines may keep selling heavily discounted fares on full flights (if they don’t think anyone will pay the higher rates).

You would think wouldn't you.
On a smaller scale ferry (here) the government hands out a viability subsidy for the company yet they're still allowed to charge $10.90 per one way adult.

No Opal cards accepted, total rip off.

It's just the way it is, you see all the $99 one way air fares advertised all the time, pretty good if you are going 1 way, not so good if you want to get back as the return price covers your initial 1 way flight loss and some, they know you are enticed by the low rate and know that if you are going for business or holiday you need to get back and you will pay to do so.

Cant see the ferry being any different, supply and demand usually sets the price in most things, if the demand is not high then get the punter to go with a cheap fare to lure them to go, then when they want to go home you can recoup the costs and some profit to get them home.

The only way I will be seeing this country is by road when I retire, its cheaper for me to fly abroad, and I do it regularly, Route 66 already booked for 3 months in 2025, I also don't go for the package deals, we fly there and wing it all the way until its time to come home, have had some awesome holidays this way.

If you think the Tassie ferry is a rip off for prices, then try going to Kangaroo Island SA, then you will know rip off pricing.

I bought a used door mirror online, for a European car. From an Australian wrecker who advertised it when still mounted to the donor vehicle.

When unpacked it was possible to clearly see where the gorillas taking it off, had yanked and broken its upper gusset trim mounting clip - the plastic fracture is fresh.

For $170, frankly I think they could have taken more care.

That is why you should use Pay Pal.Any dispute over getting what you paid for will be easier to resolve. As I understand Pay pal won’t release funds to the seller until the problem is solved

I can safely say that I'm hardly the most masculine man, but hey, we are all different. And I'm hardly perfect, I make mistakes like any other. But I am at least "man" enough to know when to say sorry.

For me, the true mark of a being a "man" is knowing when to accept you were wrong and apologize for it. Step up to the plate and be a "man" in other words.

I say this because looks can be deceiving. Sometimes the typical alpha male, masculine and strong, can often be oblivious in acknowledging their flaws, be gracious in receiving AND giving praise, and accepting when they are wrong or that someone may be offended by their apparent lack of tact or point of view.

So, who is the more manly? The gentleman who is humble and gracious, or the "man" who is all talk and no substance?

Only a door mirror?, Just today I had 2 damaged fenders, a door shell, a chipped tail light, and a scratched and faded headlight that they still wanted $400 for, I did send it back, I also received 4 parts that didn't even match the description of what was ordered, on the funny side though I did receive 2 new tailgate garnishes for a Subaru outback, but was only invoiced for 1, I did give them a call to inform them of their error.

I also received the new $175 VF commodore series 2 lower grille I ordered back in August last year from Amcap today , the 1 that I bought a seconds one for $1000 to finish the job late November, it will go into our stock for when they run out again, as they will.

Two dots of Sika will fix this, but that’s an extra job to apply, strap with tape and unwrap after. No longer a drive in, drive out as it will need to set up for a few hours.

Im hearing ya, it sucks that they cant be upfront with you, we are lucky as we have some good buying power, so a quick phone call and a instant discount is applied to cover the repair, but I cant imagine a 1 off buyer getting anything even close.

We buy sika by the carton, its a life saver

AU left mirror $49 +$2 to browse, elecs work and mininal marks. Happy days but while looking for other bits it's obvious people still don't care about what someone else might want
