Been doing it for maybe ten years now...no real plan, apart from buying anything "unusual", and the odd Treasure Hunt car if you can manage to find them.
I do collect series...you know, ones where they have four or five models on a theme.
Usually though I get unusual stuff that kids are likely to just buy and rip open straight away.
All mine are on the card still. I bought about five of the XB GT as I found them, including one to open so I could have a good look at it. The VE ute by Matchbox is very hard to find as well, but I managed to track down a couple.

Basically, collect what you like, keep them on the cards, and maybe try and find a second or third one to open for display.
Ialso trawl swap meets and markets, as you never know what you'll turn up. One guy at the Rocky Swap Meet two years ago had a tablefull of Hot Wheels cars and said "$3 each", and my son and I contained out glee as we scooped up six Treasure Hunt cars, which are worth a hell of a lot more than that!

When we buy our house in Rocky, the shed will have quite a display of model cars, old toys, and all the Hot Wheels cars on racks like you see in the shops, hanging on thier cards.

There's a great website, "Halls Hot Wheels Price Guide", and it gives current prices and values of Hot Wheels cars.

Well I looked in a bunch of stores with no luck so I thought I'd try ebay. Found a bloke in Brisbane who was selling them. Ended up getting 3 for $14 which I thought was alright considering how much other sellers were selling them for. He's getting some white ones soon too he said so I may get some of those as well.

Hey guys new here you have an awesome thread, anyhow I have been trying hard to get the current Aussie cars and have had some success I have:

*Green matchbox VE SS x2
*Red matchbox VE SS
*Purple matchbox VE SS (sealed in 5 pack)
*Blue hot wheels FG V8 supercar
*Bronze Hot wheels garage XB falcon
*White hot wheels FG v8 supercar (coming in the mail soon :p)

also have about 90% of the Aussie car releases from these companies since about 2000.

will chuck up some pics when I can be bothered getting em all out they are all MIP.

I have managed to collect every XB available now. Picture quality is poor but the hardest was the purple secret treasure hunt XB.

My son has a heap of matchbox cars but I am looking at starting a collection of 1:43 cars. Probably stick to aussie cars from classic carlectables.
