You could say the same for the 911 but at least the Porsche has evolved.

Landcruiser 70 series are only sold in a few markets including OZ, Africa and the Middle East (and not in Europe or North America). Some African countries have laws that restrict their ownership to the military. They are mainly aimed at the mining and military sector and its toughness that gives it that look is what that market demands. Their safety features (due to the mining industries OHS requirements) and drive trains have slowly been updated over the years .

Very true, another over-rated vehicle. But I would love to have the 6x6, with 3 diff locks, self-inflating tyres, and portal axles!

Yeah I get that, but if you are an avid four wheel driver, wheel tracking is a critical part of a days outing, wheel tracking can make the difference between damage and no damage, it is a poor mistake from such a renowned 4X4 manufacturer

RETRO? the need hasn't changed outside Sydney, the product has been continuously updated with lots of useless electronics and retaining some of the benefits of the older versions. Lot of 100-200 lease vehicles locally. boat and horse float towers.
Lot of FJ Cruisers locally-never see these with a trailer. Plenty of locals that have older 70 series with engine conversions, saving up when they announced to end of the 70 series and stopped selling live front axle. The number of times I heard of potential Toyota buyers that have discovered the lack off long term ability and ended up with a slow rough 4.5 ton truck. would have been great to have had the landcruiser built in OZ instead of the camry. 70 series Buyers don't go back to hilux.....bring on tundra. Diesel is not an issue with my neighbours and cant see LPG every catching on as long as they are built overseas.

C-channel chassis rails, unlike Ford, GM and Dodge which have boxed.

Looks bad ? I thought it was built to do that and the Vid was to demonstrate it's flexibility

Correct, the F150 is boxed, but the Super Duty is still based on a version based on the old 1999 C-channel frame. It's a lot more rigid than the Tundra frame though. I expect the next gen Super Duty to go fully-boxed like the Ram HD and Silverado HD.

The frame needs some flexibility, but Toyota's is too far. It's a bit like bridges need to move, but Toyota gave us a bouncy bridge from a playground. The boxed frames also bend, but not so much that the body has to take the twisting forces.

I think a better question is how does Toyota turbo charge a V8 diesel and only manage 151kw and 430nm???????????

Even with the small numbers AMC we usually dealing with, the Jeep division always made good money for them .. Probably by maximizing the use of the platform for a long, long time. Shame the used it to prop up a failing car division. |

tundra would be an unsprung weight issue. the lack of travel is obvious in one of the angles.
The tub failures---Why would you want a tub if you doing anything other than towing[5th wheel]. Its claimed that development is carried out in countries like Australia any tech[not engineer] will know that in OZ the front axle get ridgidity and the rear flex[travel] this give understeer to over come the over steer from LSD. none of this suits concrete hyway. Just had new rear leaves made by a Newcastle blacksmith for the workshop hino. the last 105000 Km have been hell with the ride worse than the ser3. they added 1 leaf on the left and shortend the eye to relocate the shackle so that it can respond to Rural NSW dreadfull road surface conditions.

Chris Bruce It's a common refrain among auto enthusiasts to bemoan the current models being sold for being overly complex and expensive and to wish that automakers would just make vehicles like the old days. Sure, they might not have been as safe or efficient, but there was often a certain rugged simplicity that's gone today. Well, Toyota is actually doing it and thinks there's enough demand to put the Land Cruiser 70 back into production in Japan for its 30th anniversary. Sadly, it's only for one year. The original Land Cruiser 70 served a long life in Japan from 1984 to 2004. Even today, the proven model remains in production in some regions abroad. People in its home country still love the vehicle though, and Toyota is brushing off the mothballs to give customers what they want. For the first time ever there, it's also offering the double-cab pickup version in addition to the traditional enclosed body. The company thinks that it can move about 200 of these classic trucks this year, which isn't too shabby for a vehicle that's three decades old. Looking at the pictures above, these look like the same old Land Cruisers, but Toyota is updating them slightly to meet modern safety rules. The grille, hood and headlights are all tweaked, and they now come with airbags and anti-lock brakes. A 4.0-liter V6 is under the hood making 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts) and 266 lb-ft of torque (360 Newton-meters), and the only available gearbox is a five-speed manual. Part-time four-wheel drive is standard. If you're really afraid of getting stuck in the wilderness, locking front and rear differentials and a winch are available as options. Prices for these throwbacks start at 3.6 million yen ($34,600) for the SUV or 3.5 million yen (33,700) for the truck. Scroll down to watch some videos of these awesome "new" models showing what they can do off-road, and to read Toyota's official announcement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p4Cw4Uu8LM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p4Cw4Uu8LM

Does this mean that the 70 series will remain on sale in OZ-media released last year that production for OZ sales had finished due to fleet requirement for 5 star ancap soon. It was to be replaced with hilux as tundra also wont be suitable replacement.
Also landrover defender production ends soon. lots of utube stuff of how much hands on the assembly line as the production comes to an end.. Is Toyota cashing in on media campaign for the new generation that is being built due to European crash regulations. 70 000+ defenders a year are planned.

If Carsales are any indication, then it looks like they have phased them out already. There is very few new ones of any type available.
