I recently did the bridge climb about 2 months ago, it was excellent. I did the twilight climb, so I started going up at about 5:30pm and came back down at around 9pm. I got to the sunset and the city at full lights. Something astonishing. As I have said, I'm pro Sydney, but I'm not ripping on Melbourne, it just didn't float my boat. But that Crown Casino, I love it!

Lol, I think AFL vs NRL has a lot to do with the Sydney vs Melbourne argument. Never really could get into AFL, but I like NRL. Likewise for most Sydney siders, where as everyone seems AFL mad in Melbourne.

I did the bridge walk a couple of weeks ago and found it awesome and very interesting! The only thing i find wrong with Sydney and this is probly most likely because im not used to it is the traffic!! I mean seriously when i was driving in there from Melbourne the line of traffic going outbound from the city near the airport was close to 15km long ( might of been 5, but pretty sure they said 15)!!

You're right about Darwin being nice and slow, it would have to be the only city in Australia where you can stroll across the road and not get beeped at for taking so long. The humidity kills me but.

I'd have to say Melbourne.

I live here, but my sister lives in Sydney. When I go to visit her, the thing that gets me is the public transport. Melbourne wins hands down in this respect. I still don't fully understand the public transport system in Sydney. If you haven't been there before, how would you know which station you're stopping at? In Melbourne it's simple, get a zone 1 if you want to get into the city, and a zone 2 if you want to stay in the suburbs. (BTW you can't buy just a zone 1 ticket from a zone 2 train station). Not to mention that the stations that I have been to in Melbourne are all cleaner than those I have been to in Sydney.

Best thing about Sydney is the flight back into Melbourne.

Yes there is a harbour there and a bridge that goes across it but really thats about it? Take one step away from it and its a chaotic rat race worse than anywhere else in Aust. Perth would be my place to live followed by Brisbane.

I quite like the diversity of Victoria's outdoor fun stuff. It's great for it's state forests and high country for camping, 4 wheel driving, riding dirtbikes, you get decent enough snow for skiing/snowboarding, good surf beaches. You got the Great Ocean Rd, Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula, Bellarine Peninsula. And you have got the Gippsland region coast with Wilsons Prom, and I really love all those places, and there not so far away from each other, which I think is fantastic. I really think they are the best things about this state, and obviously get forgotten about when somebody says something like "the best thing about Melbourne is the Crown Casino"

Agree with others postings, loved the Harbour area in Sydney and WSID but the rest was a rat race. Melbourne has some lunatic drivers and traffic generally is a nightmare(esp if your not sure where youre going), apart from the MCG and Telstradome not alot to offer either. The casino is worth a look but doesnt really interest me, other than watching with my jaw on the floor at the amounts some people throw away without batting an eyelid. Give me Qland anyday

Agree Sydney is great if youve got a lazy 10 mill to live in the harbour area but anything much outside that and its all crime and rat race not to mention the once in every 2 or 3 year golf ball size hailstones that cause soo much damage.

Melbourne is just great for sports and events, The city has become so picturess over the last couple of years, The roads and traffic are so much better, Plenty of non surf beaches around the Bay(s) or surf beaches outside the bays, More options for renting or home buying rather than being simply super expensive everywhere, The biggest and most fashionable Shopping centres in the Southern hemisphere (Chadstones going another 30% at years end), Classic century old laneways and cafes through the city, A real Casino, Less annual rainfall than Sydney according to BOM {which is ok as theres less poplulation to rely on water although most of Australia needs more in the right areas**, None of that humidity, The muliticultural society seems to get along alot better than Sydneys, You dont get a funny look if you walk around the city Monday -Fri without a suit on, No Redfern.. Sures theres more

Geelong is a great place to spend the first night of a trip down the Great Ocean Rd. (Fly down to Melbourne, hire a car, head for lunch at Topolino's at St Kilda, then onto Geelong). The waterfront is really nice how they have done it up and the bollards and the old baths are interesting, and then there's the Ford Discovery Centre and the wool museum(which I haven't been to) and their football team is doing OK lately!

Easy choice for me apart from the F1 I've always found Melbourne dreary it doesn't have anywhere near as much happening, variety or places to go especially at night.
Sydney is crowded in parts & land is expensive everywhere but there is good reason for that, people actually want to be here.

? Intersting thread, worked and lived in Melbourne for a few years, Plus worked and Lived in Sydney. I think both cities have thier good and bad points like all cities and it really is more how you live in the city not what city you live in.

And the winner is Sydney.

Both cities are very similar IMO. I only really see the CBD's, so dont get a feel for what real life is like there.

Nice to look at, nice to visit. But you guys must have some resolve to live there with the population, the tolls, etc etc.

Melbourne is not COLD. Calgary Alberta is cold when it hits minus 40 celcius. Anything above that is tropical. Harden the fkup australia.

i love both places ,and i think there both fantastic cities,if you knew sydney and surronds better you might not say that.
As for shopping centrs sydney has some fantastic ones,as goodif not better than melb,you have chatswood which has really grown into a fantastic area ,the new bondi junction,oxford street in paddington people come from all over the world and go and shop there,not my cup of tea thou,double bay very upmarket like melb..and plenty more there everywhere,

we have taronga zoo,art galleries galore,the hunter valley the best wines in australia,blue mountains 1 1/2 hrs away,

sydney is not that humid,brisbane is but not sydney,weather is definately better here even if we do get more rain,

a massive chinatown,great food etc,melbournes chinatown is tiny!!

i love melbournes little pubs,i found the roads and lack of street signs in melbourne very confusing to drive around,sydney does have more signs everywhere its more user friendly,

i do like melbournes casino its the best!! docklands is over rated flat and not pituresque at all like the harbour ,and the muddy river well we got there,

i do like the trams in melbourne,great to get around..

dont like how flat the land is in melbourne is it lacks character,i never thought about that until friends from overseas came to stay they stayed in melbourne ,then came to sydney,they said its nice to see a landscape that is not so flat!!

anyway i hope you can see what i am getting at!! they both have there positives and negatives i think they are both truly great cities ,i just happen to live in one,but i could comfortably live in either!!

The best Semmilion in Australia yes but thats about all and thats not even in the top 5 most popular grapes in Australia. If I took Vics, WA's and South Aussies wine regions and compared any of them to Hunters the Hunter would be stone cold last. I wish to state that Taronga Park Zoo is the worst Australian Zoo I have been to.
It is a concrete jungle with too many bars and concrete enclosures. I saw a snow leopard (or something similar) just pacing up and down in its enclosure.

Melbourne has moved beyond the 1960s and has open enclosures, as does Perth Zoo (which was very good).

If Taronga Park Zoo was in any other state, it would not be looked upon as greatly. Melbourne Zoo IMO is the best.

Sydney is still better for tourism though. Melbourne is still developing nightlife whereas Sydney already has it. Melbourne still has a little further to go, but it is getting better.

Adelaide...closed at 5pm, in bed by 6.

Sydney is pretty around the harbour, but once away from the harbour it as dirty city with horrible traffic, worst taxi drivers in the country.
Melbourne is prettier, more nice tree lined suburbs.
Both have their charms, and Sydney will suit some more, while others wont be able to go past Melbourne

I have many friends and relatives in Melbourne and have gone down many times,even lived there for 18 months,I quite like it,born and bred in Sydney and dont mind it,used to it I guess,I wouldnt move to another big city though,they're all the same under the surface, it seems to me some need to get out more,and stop getting your info from a current affair and newspapers.

Dead right about the zoos, even though Taronga has a 'reputation' that it doesn't deserve. Harbour view factor again? - like many things in Sydney this factor distracts from what is really mundane. As I said, put Sydney where Melbourne is and see what you get.
