Definitely not right. Our 100% stock AU II auto has been to Alice springs from Vic several times and always does 7.6l/100 manually calculated on that trip. It maybe a pile of crap that you need a boat license to drive but it goes OK on fuel for what it is (a big fat boat) lol

fuel consumption figures without a quoted average speed are next to meaningless.

PLease provide a average speed with you quoted figures! ie/ my VZ ls2 at an average speed of 42km/hr uses approx 14ltrs/100klm. (good city driving with not bad traffic)

At an avetage of ~35km/hr it uses closer to 15.5-16ltr/100klm's and at ~32km/hr is uses 16-17 ltr/100km's (thats peak hour driving in brisbane in the mornings)

No where I drive averages less than 70km/h. The full life span of my cars is always an average smack on 70. May as well ride your bike if you are doing 35 imho

If you are going to do this for real then ignore the computers as they are wildly erratic.

avg fuel usage and avg speed are calculated by this method:

1) fill the car
2) note odometer
3) note time
4) drive
5) fill car and note fuel used
6) note adometer
7) note time

avg fuel used = litres / (stop km - start km)
avg speed = (stop km - start km) / (stop time - start time)

use the appropriate formulas to convert to required units, usually l/100km and km/h

e.g. 600km in 5 hours using 90l = 120km/h and 15l/100km

I have done over 500,000km in Falcons since EA, as in ones that av speed/av fuel computers, with a lot of it over the same roads using log books for tax reason and almost never have the car computers been even close with them often being more than 50% out.

If you really can get 6l/100 out of a E series sedan then you can travel 1100 km on a tank full.
This means you can drive from Melbourne to Sydney then turn around and get almost half way back or from Brisbane to Mackay or Adelaide to the the NT border.

According to the computer in our car, we're averaging 5.9l/100kms for the last 8000kms. That's in a 2.0l turbo diesel Peugeot 307 though
For a laugh, I once did an economy run with it and averaged 4.6l/100kms, doing the speed limits up to 110km/h on the highway and with a bit of city driving chucked in for good measure. That was only over 100kms and going by the computer too, so it's not really that much of a real world example.
My point is that there are cars that will do these figures day in, day out. Not Falcon's or any other large car though.

My auto EL with over 303,000kms on the clock averages high 12's, low 13's on LPG, mainly highway driving. 10's on petrol in an EF is probably about right, isn't it?

Our 09 Fiesta petrol manual runs 5.5l/100 on a full tank distance trip including 50kms of inner city driving which stuff things up a bit. That's with 7inch wheels. You could do low 5s with one size smaller tyre on the stock 6.5s but the only time I could match Fords 4.9 was running the spare wheel. I could do easy upper 4s with the wheels from the base model I reckon. I have done 4.6 over 100km rolling down any hill etc Lol. But that wasn't being normal.

My old 5 litre auto VP used to run for 750km out of a tank but the tank is 80 litres :p.

I've gotten well over 600kms out both my AUs out on the highway best I got from an AU 6.8L/per 100kms highway. I usually get low 7s not bad for a six cylinder.

Very interesting reading, as i do a lot of running around in the suburbs here in brisbane and i always seem to get about 17l per 100klms, and 1 run to Daguliar?? north of caboolture got me 11l per 100klms. So i think i am going to change the O2 sensor an try the K and N filter see what happens. Funny thing is, that i try and drive the thing "correctly" while i am in the suburbs, slow take off,s slow down gently before i get to the lights etc, and it doesnt help...

Someone on bseries improved economy by cleaning fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator.

Should check fuel pressure and fuel flow first.

This is for my EL, but I'd assume that the EF would be the same, if not, very similar.

so we took another trip up to my nans this weekend for a birthday party, we fueld up at home and added a fuel injector cleaner. filled it all the way up and then set out on our journey, the car was tonns more responsive, we travelled 468km out of half a tank i am pretty proud of it and how well it did on the journey with a oil pressure sensor blown out and the oil just squirting out!!! ***** so i got my uncle to help take one off his spare engine at his house and he fitted it (not the right one but it'll do) no leak yay!!!

Just had a road trip from Melbourne to Sydney and back with some travel around Sydney. I was pretty happy with the result:

Trip computer figures:

9.6 av l/100km

Time: 26 hours:41minutes
77 av km/h
Distance: 2,078.5 km

Car: BA MkII Falcon XT wagon, stock, 225,000km, auto
PSI: Front - 32 Rear - 36
2 adults, 2 children under 5 years, and luggage
Driving style: cruised around 115km/h, which is 110 km/h on the overhead readouts. Accelerated to 120/125 for hills, then let speed wash off with a constant throttle pressure.

I get about 400km to a tank in Gladstone driving. If anyone has been here or lived here, the place is pretty small so it's a lot of stop start even if there isn't any traffic. Havent yet driven it on the highway for a proper trip but I'll use just shy of 3 quarters of a tank driving to bundy, some city driving in bundy and then driving back.

Trip to QLD.... Filled up in Sydney and re-set all dash readings.

Arrived in Coolangatta and filled again, had a DTE of 122 at time of filling. Averaged 4.4L per 100 and 84km/hr.

Anyone ever got their consumption off the charts? I did on the Focus ;) They assumed the DTE would never reach 4 digits lol... but it would have ;) What I saw when I filled up the day after arrival and it took 37km of stop start driving to get it down to 3 digits ;)

Should call Ford and tell em their factory figures were wrong as they could only get 4.8L per 100 ;) I had a passenger, roof racks, air-con on and a boot full of stuff for our trip away and still bettered it!

46 if you've had a Brembo upgrade!

45 only if you spend a lot of time on free flowing 70-80km/h roads. I doubt a city / surburban driven car in Sydney or Melb would go much higher than 35 on the average speed, even down to high 20's wouldn't surprise me.

Remember, the computer also calculates idle time waiting at lights or rolling in slow traffic, which kills your average!

I had an EL XR6 manual and on my longest country drive Melbourne - Eden I averaged a little over 10 litres/100km with 2 people and some gear. I did some overtaking and kept it at the 100km/h mark as often as possible. Around town normally I used around 16 litres/100km.

Now with the Mazda 3 SP23 I average 9-9.5 litres around town and it drops a little when I add some open road driving. First time I've owned a car that can average less than double digits. Falcon had a bit more kick to it though and is a little faster.

I could drop those figures on either car by being light on the throttle, but then that is no fun is it?

sounds about right. My 6 speed manual bf xr6t uses about 12l/100km taking it easy 60% highway. round about 500km a tank. Unfortunately taking it easy in a turbo manual isnt easy and I usually get about 400-500km a tank.
