Interesting from that article:
There is no third-row seat option, as with the existing X5 and X7; BMW claims the less than three per cent take-up rate for the third-row seat on its current X5 was key in this decision, though it also admits clinics revealed potential iX customers placed greater emphasis on range than the option of seven seats.

Quote:
‘OK Boomer’: BMW defends ‘hideous’ new iX electric car

Social media has turned on the luxury marque’s controversial new look and it hasn’t taken kindly to the criticism, biting back in unusual fashion.

BMW’s bold defence of its latest styling is causing problems for the brand.

The prestige marque made headlines with bold new looks for important models this year. Petrolheads have long aspired to own a BMW M3 sedan or its two-door M4 cousin, while the new BMW iX electric SUV represents the high-riding, battery-powered future of the brand.

Both wear enormous vertical front grilles likened to beavers or bugs bunny.

It’s fair to say reactions to the new look have been more than mixed.

Responding to a YouTube comment telling the brand to “go back to making BMWs”, social media representatives for the manufacturer said “OK, Boomer. And what’s your reason not to change?”.

BMW owners responded by saying a customer might “bristle at being referred to as ‘boomer’.” as “it’s become a slur for anyone older than Millennials”.

Another said “I would refuse to buy one because their marketing department thinks they are cleverer than me”.

The brand’s request for people to “be open to the new look and let’s embrace the future together” was lambasted as “fantastically patronising” by Top Gear host and respected journalist Chris Harris.

One motorist said BMW’s tweets “are almost Trump-like in their ridiculousness”

The car maker’s approach has made headlines around the world, including Jalopnik’s “BMW Launches Bizarre Marketing Campaign To Defend Its Ugly Car”.

Sniff Petrol, a satirical British motoring website with close ties to automotive media, said “the problem with this is not so much its needlessly chippy tone but that it’s trying to frame a simple bit of bad design as radical and brave”.

“The i3 was radical and brave. It was also a very professional piece of design. The iX is amateurishly bad and crude posturing won’t fix it”.

Fans on BMW Australia’s Facebook page said the iX’s front end “looks trash”, that the “hideous grill” did not fit the car, and that they “strongly dislike the direction you are going with the grill”.

BMW’s new 4 Series coupe and M3 have come in for similar criticism.

Frank Stephenson, designer of the original BMW X5 and reborn Mini Cooper, along with Ferrari, Maserati and McLaren supercars, said “they’ve ruined the front end of this car … I’m not even sure BMW designed this” on YouTube.

Legendary custom car designer Chip Foose said BMW were following a trend for huge grilles established by Audi, Lexus and other brands.

Foose said the new look “is not BMW” and that the brand has “abandoned who they were”.

There is a leading orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle. Had bought BMW M cars for himself and his wife for some 12 years, upgrading to new cars every 3 years.

Then his wife got a Lemon BMW M3. BMW were arrogant, refused to engage, he ended up taking them to a Tribunal- had useless lawyers and lost.

Promptly got rid of both BMWs and bought a Porsche for himself and his wife. This was 12 years ago- still driving a Porsche as does his wife, and he is happy with Porsche. Upgrades both Porsches every 3 years.

BMW is arrogant, The Bangle fiasco- now this- telling customers what the reality is- even with Lemons to a loyal customer.

I loved the clean line classic small BMW sedans- their latest creations are frankenstein abominations....

Personally would not go BMW- too much Germanic arrogance for me to stomach...

It is truly the height of arrogance to blame the people who hate it as wrong, and to not admit that if the design wasn't so polarizing then people would have no reason to hate it.

It's like they are forcing their designs on people, and not listening to feedback.

That approach worked wonders for the AU Falcon. The styling clinics largely hated it, but they moved forward with it anyway.

I feel like it's one of those things that will look worse on bright colours, and more acceptable on darker colours like black and grey.

Some people have done some renders on what it might look like with a more traditional BMW grill.

Looks heaps better. What could have been.

Pretty sure I read somewhere than an aftermarket company is making a front bar like that for it, so owners can replace the ridiculous standard one.

I spotted a new 4-Series Coupe sitting proudly? outside the local BMW dealership on the way to work this morning. If it were my dealership, I would have it parked out the back under a tarp so that no one would see it. In fact, I would not even order them for stock! These things look just as bad in the metal as in they do on paper.

On the flip side, coming home tonight a new 8-Series looked stunning coming towards me and in the rear vision mirror too.

It seems the new 2-Series has been spared the BMW beaver teeth. Here's hoping the M2 doesn't end up with it.

And unlike the current 4-Series coupe, the 2-Series has retained the traditional BMW hofmeister kink.

I just don't know why the hell BMW are doing this grotesque styling for?
I really like the current styling of the 7 series:

It still has the grilles but it looks nicer on these cars - would look epic in white.

I personally think the big grills work well on their larger models such as the X5, X7 and 7-Series.

These models have the physical size to pull that grill off. My problem is the deliberately heinous and attention seeking grills they have plastered on models that it just does not work on.

Saw a dark blue 4 series today, i thought the grille looked fine. Certainly one you have to see in person.

I have to admit to seeing a few 4-Series on the road now and like you said, it needs to be judged in person. It looks ok in the flesh but I have to rein myself in with "no no no no it hideous".

BMW!! It costs the same to make a beautiful car as it does an ugly one.
