When I was selling Fords it was all about doing whatever it took to stop them buying elsewhere. If that meant matching a crazy price or making less money, then it was generally worth it. As for discussing what we'd do on the weekend, it was generally discussing how many cars we'd sell. Worked 2 out of 3 weekends and they were generally the best days for selling cars to new customers walking in off the street - doing their shopping on the weekend. I only mucked around at 7:30am in the morning when we were unlocking cars in winter and it was 5 degrees outside. Don't generalise, it's not nice to the majority who aren't part of it.

Always look at the cost of the change over price, trade in price means buger all, its how much money you have to part with that counts.

My first question: is there a payout on your XR6? If so, then a dealer will get a wholesale figure for your trade in and instead of giving you a discount on the new car, he will use it to cover the payout.
Another thing, do you remember that a dealer in sydney was giving away a Fiesta 3 door LX if you bought an XR8 for $50k odd? That was because Ford had such big bonuses to move BA MKII XR8 stock, they could afford to do it. ATM, there is a bonus of over $8k for BF MKI XR8 stock. It also depends on the individual. As a Ford Salesperson myself, I always give the customer the option of either a discount or higher trade in. There are advantages to both sides, but ultimately it is the customer's choice. And just remember, the Redbook is what someone mentioned before, just averages. Ring them and ask them to buy your car. I'll bet I know what the answer will be. I agree with what others have said too. Know which vehicle you would like to own and get the best figure you can on it. Just be prepared for a lower trade figure (wholesale). There is only 1 bucket of profit, and you can't have wholesale for the new car and retail for the trade. It doesn't work like that. As for not giving trade in figures, those dealers are so afraid of being "shopped", they hope you will come back after you have done your shopping, and all they have to do is beat it by $50 and they will get your business. I like to work on the philosophy that "honesty is the best policy", and if you have done your job right, and the customer likes you, they will usually respect you for it and deal with you anyway.

With my cars I generally go back to the same salesman. I give him a call tell him my car is 3 years old and I want another one and how much I want to spend. He doesn't muck around and brings out a demo model to me to play with; if I like it he does everything behind the scenes, brings the docs to me to sign and that's that.
With my recent adventure helping my daughter buy a Ford car, we did the traditional route and it was exasperating. Finally she rang the Teachers Credit union who organised a changeover price way less than we got from the various car yards. Amazing how this was immediately matched by the others when they rang with followup calls. She bought a Holden on the basis that if the Ford pointy end is deceitful, the warranty/service will probably be the same. |

Thats all bang on the money, i couldn't have said it better myself. The RACV website may put a price on your car, but they dont have to buy it and then try to sell it.

all good points. the most is whether or not there is a pay out figure on your trade and how much out of the new car is he having towards the pay out figure? i guess at the end of the day, it's what the final change over figure is from one to another.
my last 2 cars have been bought under the same method and i saved myself some cash. traded my ba ute for 23200 on a brand new typhoon (payout figure at the time was 19500 on the ute) so i knew i had 3700 up my sleeve. did a real good job on the purchase price on my typhoon, so i knew there wasn't any "fat" in the deal...... however i knew that they were getting 22500 wholesale for my ute but were giving me 23200, so there was 700 they were throughing towards the trade from the new car...... here's the winner.... threw 500 on the table as a deposit on the deal, subject to finance but wanted 3 weeks before the deal was to go through.... in the meantime i wanted the option to sell my ute privately and then buy the typhoon outright.... sold the ute shortly after for 25700 and then rang the dealer i would go unconditional as an outright sale at 700 less the original purchase price (the diference they were throughing from the typhoon to the trade figure) so at the end of the day, i was up 3200 on the trade deal, and extra 2500 on the private sale price to the trade price plus the 700 off the final value of the new car....... confusing i know, but its worked for me on the last 2 fords i have bought and its the 3rd car from that salesman and dealership who are a great mob to deal with!!!!!
