Crossovers are what seperates the Bass, Midrange and Treble. In this case, it is taking the treble to send to the tweeters, and the Bass & Midrange is going to the main speaker (midbass driver).
They can range from complex circuitry housing in a seperate box (that the speaker wire runs to) to a simple capacitor wired in line with the tweeter. |

The crossover box splits up the frequencies in the sound and sends the high frequencies to the tweater (small speaker) and the low-mid frequencies to the woofer (big speaker). Basically, you run the + and - wires from the amp/headunit to the crossover box, then from the crossover box, you run wires to the tweeter and woofer. (2 x + and - wires) You get a better overall sound with split speakers, because of the diverse range of frequencies they produce, but, they do require a bit of power (usually around 40-90wrms (depending on the speakers)) to make them sound REALLY good Hope that helped, Yagz Last edited by Yagz; 15-01-2005 at 10:43 AM. |

Splits as a rule don't require more power to sound good. Like any speaker, they sound better when amped, but you will find that even running off a stock headunit they will sound MUCH better than the stock speakers (dual cone) and in most cases better than equivalent spec coaxials (Speaker with tweeter mounted in the middle. ie. 2 way or 3 way) because they have the added advantage of being able to mount the tweeters higher, lifting the sound stage (i.e. making it sound like the sound coming from in front of you, rather than from your feet). Having said that, crossovers do often 'waste' some of the power going to the speakers. but it is hardly noticible... |

Crossovers in the doors are fine IMO i have the same front speakers and i installed them myself aswell but i ran new wires throughout the whole car not that hard really just gotta have small hands and a coathanger
I put the tweeters in the stock location however as they arent visible and the sound isnt as harsh or your ears. Since yours is a futura and it comes with tweeters in the dash there is a very easy way of getting power to them without having to run new cables. 1.remove stock tweeter and cut wires to it note which ones are which. 2.solder old wires to new tweeter and secure in position i.e. loctite 3.remove headunit and cut tweeter wires going into stereo 4. solder new wires onto this and run it through the doors to whereever your crossover this may look complicated but it isnt maximum time it should take you is a coupla hours per door |

I had a pair of bullets as well, and they are very good speakers. They give off a very nice sound, and even better when amped. Not only that they look sexy.
I needa get off my **** and finish off my system. Good on ya, for having a go yourself too!

OK I think I get it now.
Splits are a type of speaker, with numerous cones? The smaller the cone the higher the freq it is suited for? The crossovers pick what freqnencies are good for what cones and sends them to the right ones? |

splits are generally completely seperate speakers (one tweeter and one mid, sometimes more)
Coaxials have numerous cones

Dual cones are like the stock speakers (a normal speaker cone, with a smaller cone in the middle). These are crap. lol :P
Coaxials are like a normal speaker, but have one or more smaller speakers attached in front of it. Commonly referred to as 2-way, 3-way or 4-way (depending on how many smaller speakers are attached to it. Splits are a normal speaker, and a seperate tweeter. Two entirely separate objects that can be placed independantly of each other. |

Oh, and yes, coaxial is a type of cable :P Most commonly used in aerials and things like that. It is basically a type of wire, with a coating over it, then some more wire around the outside before some more coating. It's basically like two wires in one. It also has better sheilding properties from interference, as the outside wire (usually the earth) sheilds the inside wire. ;)

Mono block is an amp that is made for running a sub. They are alot cheaper than normal say 2 - 5 channel amps because they dont have as much insides and they are only designed to run subs...not speakers aswell.

Mono amps sent signals in mono, not stereo. Best thing for when you only want to run frequencies around 40/50 Hz.
I really should do a stereo for the EL...but soooooooo many other things to do first.
