Very impressive, does anybody know what sort of budget was used to engineer something as big as this, I would be thinking in the Billion's, would be interesting to know what sort cost something as big as this has made.

i read the number 18 billion was the budget but they have/are still going over... that was off a blog though so could be false.

I dunno which came first, the book or the announcement from CERN that they had created anti-matter, but I only read the book recently so it was the opposite for me. Reading the book reminded me CERN had already made anti-matter so it all fitted quite well into the plot even though it's possible it was fiction (or speculation) at the time it was written.

The most interesting speculation about this project is the possible confirmation of the theorised Higgs boson, a particle thought to be responsible for mass. Imagine the implications of being able to 'genetically modify' an atom to create a substance that has no mass. Or the opposite, create artificial mass that takes up no space (essentially a stable, man-made micro black hole), maybe even artificiialy create enough mass to warp time and space and make time travel plausible. The mind truly boggles...

As for budget, it would be huge. It's a global collaboration and whatever the projected budget was, they would be well over after having some of the earlier super conducting magnets fail quality targets and being redisigned. I also shudder to think of the electric bill to run this thing with 27km of track being cooled to almost 0K (-273 C) and needing a few weeks to get down to operating temperature in stages.

That actually sounds like the Z machine built by Sandia labs. It's a nuclear fusion reactor which fuses heavy hydrogen to create helium as a by-product. There's not much heavy hyrogen here on the planet but the moon is literally covered with the stuff.
Z machine

I went to a seminar on the LHC.

I have a degree in Physics and i still found some of the concepts they were talking about mind boggling!

The LHC was meant to be up and running in 2007.

Hopefully within the next year or two, they will discover the 17th particle with the monstrosity! The elusive Higgs Boson! YAYYYYYYYYYYY

But you do all understand that if the universe is destroyed next year then there will never be a V6 falcon, so it's probably not all bad.....
