So ALL pornography would be banned? What if I've got a subscription? I can totally understand banning child porn, but I thought the normal classification was 18+. Surely they cant take that away, thats like banning beer becuase it gets you drunk. Why are they wasting time and money on this crap anyway? Surely the money could be put to better use, example - tumbling economy.
I PAY for my internet, I think its totally unfair for them to even think of toying with it. However, if my ISP was the Australian Government, than fair enough.

Why wont they realise that if a underage teenager wants porn, theyre gonna get it one way or another. Be it P2P (how would they moderate this?) or web surfing.

^^ It's the web they are planning on censoring. P2P would/could be next on their list. Then who knows? Anti government material?

When did Australia suddenly become communist?

Another annoying aspect to this draconian measure is the effect the filtering servers will cause to internet speeds. A reduction in speeds of up to 50% has occurred during testing. Kind of puts us behind the eightball again in regards to Conroy's so called "national broadband network".

So what the hell is this going to achieve? Besides annoying a lot of people and pushing this country into a pseudo - dictatorship? Its disturbing that a democratic country won't anow anti - government stuff, free speach? And if a 13 year old can't get porn from the net, does this mean he goes and steals mags from the newagent? (lol : )

At worlds end

pffft give us real internet connection speeds first and your more than welcome to block porn and illegal sites ....

Exactly. Parents are responsible for what their children look up, so not everyone else should have their usage blocked because of it.

rudd has been in government for around 11 months and has absolutly stuff the country, his solution to just about everything is to slap a tax on it...cars, alcohol..
If you voted for rudd. U are as smart as he his..he dont know how to run a country so hes just doing all the small things to make himself look busy..I think people should be able to let themselves decide what they want to see on there internet..

Its not going to happen. In Australia, our internet will always be a free roaming connection. There is no way our Government would block us from certain sites. If it happened, you would not believe the amount of people who would go into anarchy. Australia is the last place on earth that this sort of dictatorship would happen, and if it did happen, (in a few hundred years, maybe) like many have said, there would be countless ways around the 'system'.

I dont support filtering so dont bother with that tripe, Im just pointing it out.

Well said, in the past eight years we have had all sorts of freedoms watered down and taken away under the guise of anti terrorism. Lets not forget the only reason we are a "target" is because our moron government and opposition at the time decided to join in on another Vietnam with the dumbass yanks. It is happening so slowly and is being ignored by useless and incompetent main stream media who are more concerned about "important current affairs" like whether or not shapelle corby is a drug courier. We now have ads on tv suggesting we dob in someone for doing something suspicious. What happened to the old idea of communities being communities. We never had any serious problems then. Cops ran beats they actually lived in, and kicked when it needed to be kicked. We used to have real parents who took time to actually raise children and therefore knew where their kids were and what they were doing rather than leaving them in front of computers or tvs to do the work for them. I hope this falls over and the government is made a mockery of. Knee jerk reactions to media beat ups do little to deal with the real issues like incompetent parenting.

It won't happen, the funding of the hardware needed to do it would be just insanely massive.

It would be similar to the great firewall of china, it would just be insane.

Can't see it happening any time soon.

Telstra would be able to easily afford it with the monopoly they seem to run.

Haven't they already set aside almost $200million - of my, and your money, I might add - for this farce?

All of you claiming that it 'will never happen' or 'it cannot happen'... it can, and it will.... as long as we all let it.

As I've said in another thread, it's a very slippery slope... this is yet another (large) step down that slope.

The current government has set aside $128.5 million for this project. Any extra cost that ISP's incur as a result of having to meet government conditions will obviously be passed onto you the consumer. So not only will your net speed get slower, but also more expensive.

Live trials of the great firewall of Australia are to begin at the end of the month.
Maybe you want to check with you ISP and see if they are taking part.

actually, censoring the content wouldn't be that hard. I mean, there are alread parental filters that look at content coming into the computer at a personal level, to have that placed onto the server side in an ISP wouldn't that too much.

Honestly, it won't happen, civil rights would be threatened, plus it is constitutionally illegal

Who says it's unconstitutional? We have nothing akin to the US 1st amendment, though the High Court has recognised an implied right of political free speech from our Constitution, but that's as far as it goes. Whether or not this censorship will be considered unconstitutional is far from clear.
See this link - http://www.aph.gov.au/library/Pubs/R...-02/02rn42.htm - for an introduction.

Censorship is nothing new in this country - for example, there have been several video games that the OFLCB has refused to give a classification to, effectively banning their sale - this is just taking it to a whole new level.

I'm also extremely sick and tired of censorship. I pay MY money to an ISP each month. I'm an adult and can choose what I want to view on the Internet. I will not tolerate anyone (whether it be Govco, religious nutbags or people with kids) telling me what I can and cannot view.
If people decide to have kids, it's THEIR responsibility to keep an eye on them.

While they're at it, how about banning cars as someone might get hurt. Stop people from going outside in general. There's lots of nasties out there. There's also lots inside the home.

I'm off to watch Star Trek. It might be fake but at least it's set in a time that doesn't suck! :P Unlike our future

What a pathetic policy - people should have the choice as to what they look at and not be dictated to by the government which is elected by the people to serve the people (not the other way around).

All this money and censorship to stop teenagers looking at porn? Honestly does it really matter if they do look at porn???? Are they going to be scarred for life or something???

There are ways around this with 15 mins of work so I'm not too bothered. What does annoy me is the government could have spent their money on better things than this.

Fact is that the mainstream media will pick this up and make it out like if your opposed your some kind of freak looking for terrorist websites. Those that want to will get around it. Those who dont care will guarentee it gets implemented.

So far it seems like nobody actually knows about it... every person I've spoken to - friends, work colleagues, etc. - had no idea about it until I told them... so spread the word people.
