I believe Korea is the only country where their train system pays off their investment and runs at a profit. It's also so cheap and easy to use. The Japanese Shinkansen network seems to also cover the majority of the mainland. I have used it a few times. It's much more expensive compared to Korea and I found their metro system in Osaka to be an absolute joke. Expensive and overly complicated, especially with long duration travel passes. Haven't been to China in over 10 years, didn't catch any fast trains but made good use of the Beijing metro. It was dirt cheap, but not very foreigner friendly. We fumble and screw up our public trains costing us hundreds of millions in trial and error. Should have just got 2 Korean boffins here to sort out our systems. Sent from my LG-M700 using Tapatalk

USA with it's 320 million people can barely run a regional service that makes money.
USA will get a high speed regional train before Australia. So no one on this forum today will see a high speed train in Australia. Good old Wendover is great for transportation videos. |

I was on a Shinkansen that broke down. Someone mentioned at the time it was the first to do so? Anyway, it was mid summer there so hot and humid, the air-con stopped as the train did, and passengers were subject to 45 minutes of profound apology (in Japanese). I couldn't really understand it but it sounded very sincere!
They are awesome trains tho.

Looking at the ticket price its currently $114 each way for a cattle class ticket, it takes approx 4 hours longer than driving. I can do driveway to driveway in about 7 - 7.5 hours including a fuel stop costing about $60 depending on the car I'm driving, with the benefit of having my car in Adelaide so I can wheel about everywhere. $165 return from Jetstar for Melbourne - Adelaide if you want to take to the skies, 1 hour 20 mins each way. The Overland doesn't fare too well at price and time wise. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 07-03-2020 at 07:05 PM. |
