I have no doubt it was lost on her, the best thing I've seen said about this situation is that Australians have viewed world events through their TV screens and have never had to face this type of situation before so have a false sense of security and I think my Daughter fits that description perfectly. |

Bring on tomorrow, where I can - in the solitude of my trade and watched only by the kookaburras above - stick my head into a three foot deep hole for strictly work purposes.

What are the ‘real’ figures then? Easy enough to post crap at others from the safety of a keyboard.

I thought flights would become fairly cheap but QANTAS is still charging the usual for domestic flights.

The idea of schools closing has been examined and is unlikely to happen.
Experience from elsewhere suggests that it has no benefit and provided schools make other changes like no assemblies etc then school can remain a safe place for kids. Will be interesting to see how people react to so many things closing for extended periods. Perhaps we'll begin to question if the simpler life without it all is actually better. |

Exactly the opposite. This is a highly contagious virus, person to person transmission is very high, and school kids can easily be carriers. The potential for family to the child to another child and then another family is very high. China, Japan, Italy, South Korea, many parts of the EU - schools were amongst the first to close! People want their kids safe in case you hadn't noticed. |

This is now more than just an “inconvenience”
“Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has warned that up to 150,000 Australians could die from the coronavirus. Professor Kelly today said the number of infections would be “somewhere in the range” of 20 per cent to 60 per cent of the population. “This is an infectious disease,” he said from Canberra. “The more we can do to separate people and stop the disease spreading, the better. The death rate is around 1 per cent. You can do the maths.” Under a best-case scenario, which would be a 20 per cent infection rate, he said around 50,000 people out of 5 million infected with the disease could die. A moderate scenario would mean around 100,000 dead.”

GovCo is running through the numbers, it will come down to:
a) quarantine most the country for weeks/months and emerge with 95-99% of the population virus free or b) no quarantine and have 100% of the population with the virus I think you may be able to work out which option. ScoMo is already socialising 6 months disruption. This will mean only absolutely essential work will continue: defence force, groceries, pharmacies, supply transport, health care, electricity, water, sanitation, oil refining, telecommunications-internet, Netflix, etc. Everyone else stays home, and hopefully many can work from home. GovCo will work out some sort of rostering system for people to essentials from the local supermarkets e.g surnames A-F on Monday. G-J on Tuesday and so on. Expect fuel rationing. The economic impact is more than severe. Some unanswered questions. Many people will have no income and no savings, how will people pay for food, mortgages, rents, car loans, water, electricity etc? Maybe let people take 25% from their super accounts - who knows? It will be difficult enough to bring the economy in with a soft landing, re-starting it will interesting. |

One more thing, our GovCo and TrumpCo need to close the stock market for a few weeks and figure out the best recovery approach. The stock market aided by our doomsday media is nothing but an unnecessary distraction.

Qantas just announced a 90% cut in international flights and 60% cut in domestic flights. This isn't cutting the cost of the flights but the number of flights. To be reviewed again towards the end of May 2020.

Evidence from overseas suggests that the sending kid's home idea exposed many elderly who were the ones that most frequently cared for those kids not at school.
So as i stated above and made Cheap angry about, that policy has been reviewed and revised after that overseas experience. Keeping kids going to school but with new strict guidelines is likely better to stop the spread to vulnerable people in the community. |

Just announced in Pura Vida land... (even though only 35 positives and no deaths, government is really taking a stance)
https://ticotimes.net/2020/03/16/cos...-non-residents I can see this becoming the norm for every country? The economy here is heavily tourism based... And we’re still in high season! Going to be heaps hurting financially!

You've been on the wrong end of Coronaviris since it first started, first you said it was nothing to worry about just like Ebola, then you complained about facts being racist and now you're harping on about no need to close schools - total nonsense. Give it a rest and go back to the Tesla thread! |

On a positive note...
If we go into lock down, we are expecting a baby boom. This new generation will be known as the "Coronials" |

Watch this space mate. Quite likely a lot of airlines will be going south very quickly. Low cost carriers run amazingly fine margins, of simply lose money. Don’t book tickets too far ahead. Qantas has cut about 90% international and 60% domestic. That’s a burden many simple can’t afford
