When I was 19 I applied for a job at supercheap. My resume checked out, I wrote a cover letter talking about how much of a car enthusiast I am and that I drive a 76 datsun that I maintain myself, etc etc.
I knew a bit about cars then for a 19 year old who wasn't a mechanic. I could set and replace points, change timing, gap spark plugs, change oil and filter(s), bleed brakes, adjust mixture and CHANGE A TIRE!. I didn't even get an interview. They probably hired some 16 year old blonde with big tits. So if they don't even care to interview someone who is passionate about cars, they mustn't care too much about their customers. |

I love supercheap, I can get 2AG and 3AG fuses from there for the XP's ancient fusebox, and I cant get them anywhere bloody else!!
Went to Repco, Dick Smiths, Jaycar, Sprints before i went to the last place I figured that would have them.

I've found that almost everyone expects too much from people behind the counter at automotive part stores. Try putting yourself in their shoes. Some customers ask the most ridiculous questions and then get the s**ts when you don't know the answer.
I had a bloke come into my store the other day saying "Mate do you know the firing order on a g102 Charade" I then replied "Nah sorry I dont have that infomation on hand, I can order in a workshop manual and that will tell you but other wise you will have to ask a mechanic" He then proceeded to go off his nut and asked me how I managed to get my job and if I knew anything about cars at all. For some reason they always seem to be VN drivers. But back to topic, yes the person serving at super cheap should have known their oils and should have known the basics about drain intervals. Before someone is hired and can start giving advice they should learn the basics about: - Oils (No point selling a bloke GTX2 20w-50 to put in his new Lexus just because the packaging says 'for cars built after 1992') - Stereos - Painting - Bearings/Trailer Acc - Globes (H1's H4's Stop/Tail etc etc) - Polishes and Waxes! (Don't sell the same bloke kitten cutting compound to polish his new lexus because the packaging says it will 'restore shine') Without this basic training the salesman may have ruiened a $10,000 engine and without a doubt ruiened someone's paint job. Realisticaly this problably wouldnt happen but you get my point. There are some people out there who have no idea when it comes to buying car parts and would take advice from anyone who they think might have SOME idea.

the staff at super cheap know very little in my experience, and look to be at max 19 years of age, this is most likely because super cheap auto is the equivalent of a supermarket but for car parts and tools and such, you don't go into Coles and ask them how to prepare your food now do you :
and on the subject of knowledge there is these magic boxes that pull information about anything and everything out of your phone line! you are using one now to read this It is unrealistic to expect staff at any kind of market setup to know what to do with every single product in the store.

Ive always referred to vehicle manuals or jump on the net for 5 mins to determine what part I need, jump in the car to a proper auto parts retailer and all is well. Its not just the car industry where you get people giving you wrong advice, it's everywhere, you even hear often of doctors giving false diagnoses etc etc. Best thing to do in my opinion is research yourself and know what you need/want. BTW Im not meaning to attempt your own leg amputation but you get the idea

They're only kids, they probably don't give half a toss about some bogan's clapped out old Falcon, but at least they have a go. Don't know why anyone would ask a kid working the job part-time any kind of mechanical questions but if you do, you get what you pay for. The staff I've talked to have always been friendly and tried their best to help me, and that goes a long way in my books. And yes, I am a bogan with a clapped out old Falcon.

If we had customers who came in with even a scrap of knowledge about what kind of car they own and drive every bloody day so that we don't spend 10 minutes having to determine what make model and year it is (customer: 'whats the compliance plate?') then maybe we would have more time to spend learning about the ins and outs of every thing we sell. Yes we have 16 year old casuals who don't give a **** - but are you really going to trust the advice they give you?? And I am SO SICK of d!ck heads coming in and looking straight past me for the guys cos they'll know more just to have the guys come and ask me how to look something up or how something works... Don't bag all of us cos you get 1 bad person who doesn't know what they are talking about. Thats prejudicial bull ****!! I've been in my job for the last 8 years and I sure as hell know what the **** I am talking about - hell I'll even go and take the fuse out and show you its busted and that your bulb isn't faulty...

super cheap are hopeless with anything you throw at them i went in there to grab a radiator hose and i saw where they kept them and thought stuff this i went and asked the guy spent about 35minutes searching through the mess i said dont worry and drove 40min to repco and got one in 2 minutes. they had them jammed into the shelves in no particular order

As said above by 4V ... Super Cheap is an auto shop where you know what you want get it off the shelf .... nothing more, nothing less. If you want advise go to Bursons or Repco and they should have the service to match the pricing (Sometimes)

Quite simply - If you don't like it DON'T SHOP THERE!! Just don't bag all of us cos you had 1 bad experience. GROW UP!
I have quite the client base of people who only come in to see me and talk to me as I know what I am talking about, and so do many other people I know who work at Supercheap Auto. If you don't want our advice and help then don't flippin ask for it! If you want to know full technical advice or complete servicing schedules talk to the people who do it - MECHANICS... not retail shop assistants. We can only tell you what we do ourselves. We don't have sales reps come in from each company and give us the breakdown on the who, what, when, where and how's of each of the products that we sell.. once again we can only tell you what we have learned from what we do ourselves mostly.. Or alternately we can pass on the very biased and skewed information presented to us by the limited number of sales reps that do come in - perhaps you'd prefer that? Bottom line - if you want to buy something, ANYTHING do your research and know what you are talking about before you walk in to ANY retail store. <once again from Jason's girlfriend> |

I have had just as bad experiences with the "so called" trade experts from many different stores,there's good and average in all but one thing that impress's me at most SCA's I visit is they have manners ! and that's worth coming back imo.
