Thanks guys I've been thinking about what to do all night, I don't mind that the car is stacked it's just the fact that now I have to spend more weekends rubbing back and painting again : To be honest I can't be stuffed, but I will cause the rest of the car is mint and I've got a lot of go-fast bits sitting round waiting to go on. I might get full comp now though, so if it ever happens again I don't have to stuff around painting ****.

Rmyers - the trans lines are fine mate, I just noticed earlier on Sunday that the trans lost drive for a bit going to the video shop then it would make a weird noise (kinda like a dog yelping) when it engaged the gear. Dunno what's going on with it.

Sorry to hear man, all that work getting it painted and looking mint went down the drain in a few seconds.

Hope you get it repaired and going again! Glad to hear you ok at the least, could have ended up a lot worse at that speed.

not good news doug.

i'm guessing from your initial description that it lost drive to the wheels, then as it re-engaged, since your foot was still on the throttle, it must have jolted and kicked the back end out.

I remember you mentioning a while ago that the transmission was a bit dodgy. Time for a rebuilt i think mate!

At least your OK man, my panel beater might be able to sort something out for you if you need, you've seen his work and if he can't do it he'll know someone that can, let me know if you wanna get it repaired.

Could have been alot worse though, after seeing Joe's car it looks like you got off lightly.

I read the whole thread, and I still don't see how a transmission can cause a car to drift into a truck, and at the point you posted your thoughts, he had only mentioned that it occasionally flared up to 3000rpm. So you have some explaining to do. I personally, would like to hear your theory about how an auto trans can affect steering, or cause the car to aquaplane.

cruising along at 2000rpm on a freeway.
trans flares to 3500rpm, suddenly grabs gear properly, wheels attempt to match speed of 3500rpm.

combined with wet weather and average tyres, its deffinately possible.
my car in the dry when the gearbox was flaring between changes caused it to break traction, don't see how this would be much different.

I guess so. At least yours is an explanation I can understand, and it does seem possible, just don't know why the trannie would flare at constant throttle. Something for me to be aware of now anyway - flaring transmission = get fixed to avoid bigger problems. That's all I was after in the first place, really.

and it can happen JC.. I have had them with a faulty solenoid or damaged clutch pack (cant remember) and the BTR will monetarily find a 'false' neutral.. AS EFFalcon said when it finds the gear again it is no different to doing a neutral dump from slow speeds

Yep, I will be keeping an eye on mine from now on and any slipping will be dealt with straight away.

I think the lesson of this thread is to keep the car in the best mechanical condition possible. It's great to have a nice paint job, but if the areas of the car that matter let you down, then the paint job isn't going to save you. So....fix that slipping clutch, and those seizing callipers (as on my EL - until I fixed them last Friday), always have decent tyres, and ensure your suspension is up to scratch.

Having said that, I do feel sorry for sphell, as I know what it's like to be doing up a car and have something happen to it that sets you back a fair way. But at least it's only the car that was damaged.

Watch having cruise control turned on when wet too, one of my mums friends years ago had a bad accident with a car on a waterlogged road and cruise control that kept the throttle constant through it when aquaplaning

These days I think the car's ecu turns it off when it senses t/c coming on (if it has it) but still dangerous nontheless

My old auto was doing the same. It was simply dangerous in the wet, due to a stuffed S5 solenoid, and shoddy bands. The 1st to 2nd gearchange in particular was a very nervous experience.

Umm, it's very simple. You're driving along at 100, and suddenly the transmission kicks down to 3rd gear, or spikes as your cruising, causing the rear wheels to lose traction in the wet, and then the car goes sideways.......

The bald tyres wouldn't have helped, but the transmission, if that did happen, i.e: the transmission spiking, could have very well caused the accident.

The BTR is known to spike when it's low on fluid, or when it's on its way to dying.

EDIT: Just realised there was another page of this thread, and saw other peoples explanations, but i'll keep mine up still anyway.

Maybe you've never experienced a retarded BTR? They get a mind of their own. I've owned a total of 8 including the cars they've been in. Each have had their own characteristics, some have been faultless and smooth and others did all sorts of dangerous random ****.
