for me I wish the swear filter would substitute removed words with something instead of just ripping them out of the sentence, it can make reading posts with words that have been ripped out seem like they were written by somebody with tourettes or something what I mean is something like the below
make sure they dont !filtered! the bubbles with a pin instead of make sure they dont the bubbles with a pin (using the bubbles under pinstripe example above) a swear filter is a good thing but sometimes knowing that it has ripped words out and from where in the sentence can help read what the poster is trying to say just a suggestion :

I'm sorry I stirred up this dormant thread. I fully go along with AFF in having this filter to maintain standards, the important thing is so no one will get offended when reading it.
Unfortunately it seems the filter cannot read the word in the context that it is being used, so it wont substitute words let alone leave it there if it is being used in a non-offending way. So do what I do, read the post after sending, to check grammar, spelling and also anything inadvertently left out. And anyone who does have a word deleted by this filter, the swear filter program is very clearly shown working on the posters screen while it is being sent. So theres no excuse for sentences left not making sense with that word missing. |

What does matter is what the site Admin implement. In this case they have built in a swear filter that is not to be evaded as part of the site rules, these are the same rules every agrees to abide by when joining. |

The standard of conduct here is not the standard that would apply if we were chatting directly, but when we chat directly, its just us. I fully support the holier than thou approach that is taken, I'd rather see someone upset because they can't use a word than someone be upset because they dont hare my sense of humour (I have 11 warning points as testament to that).
We get a whole lot for nothing here, I fully appreciate and support the decisions taken by the moderators.

Is it hard to express yourself without resorting to foul language? Generally, or on here, I mean. It is a simple language for us to understand, there's plenty of ways to enhance your vocabulary. You're on the internet, make good use of it? Plus, I hear the "F" word on countless occasions every day, but I've never heard it on the 6 o'clock news. Have you? That wasn't more my point, as much as to say there needs to be a level of decency that needs to be maintained, which includes drawing a line somewhere.

had a way around swear filter for appropriate words (like I pricked my finger) posted here. But this forum actually looks at the displayed word, not the word typed into the box (by breaking it with tags you can get around the swear filter on some forums. Not this one...)
Bummer...

The Filter Stands
It serves a purpose, more ways than one.

As noted above the words in the filter have been added after extensive discussion however, I do agree that when a word is removed it should be replaced by a string as suggested above so that the sentence still makes sense and this change has been implemented.
Cheers Russ

That's a fundamental given (Wrong is wrong, it cannot be changed because the majority accepts it as right ), a given that could and should be used in relation to a whole lot of other threads

Hadn't thought of that - but they will be replaced by four stars.

The ECU ************** the timing.....well sorry the swear filter took out r e ta r d s so no one understands what I'm saying. I think the swear filter is good but this has got way out of hand. I can still insult you. "You smell like excreted digested food" for example.
