A car that is above the $100000 price tag. LOL
On a series side, I think that no Ford or Holden come close to luxury. Drive an Audi R8 or a high end Merc BMW and you will see a big difference |

My List is:
- Smooth engine and drivetrain with adequate power (doesn't have to overly powerful, unless you are looking at performance luxury) - Premium Quality Materials. Real Leather, Real Timber and leather covered everything, from doors, dash and etc. - Advanced Tech where possible. 7-8speed autos, adaptive cruise control etc. - Soft smooth suspension - Decent set of wheels - Comfort features - Heated and Cooled seats, comfortable seating, Heated & cool cup holders and etc. - At less an option of a sunroof / Panoramic sunroof. - Decent high quality clear stereo. - A large list of standard equipment that is above the standard features of cars. - Have somewhat of a premium look to it (exterior wise - something that looks somewhat upmarket and different to the norm.)

My first taste of driving luxury was a WB Statesman Caprice in the mid 80's from Sydney to Brisbane. Something about that car made the 10-12 hour journey a walk in the park.

Given the keyword being used around here is "elements", I drive an AUIII Fairmont Ghia. Easy done!

The biggest turn off is a supposed luxury car with a worn drivers leather seat.
The leather has to be soft and supple no creases or rips.. I've seen a few with a drivers seat with hard crusty leather with creases in it that would dig into your back / legs. |

The definition certainly has changed over time. 30 years ago the idea of an XE Ghia with leccy windows, cruise and central locking was the duck's guts.
Now, I'm thinking leather, good sound, useful steering wheel functions and lazy power (and plenty of it) and a sunroof. The most luxurious part of my EL monty is the momo leather wheel in it. Fat, soft and comfortable (just like me).

My first taste of luxury was my Dads 5 yr old ZK Fairlane , silver 4.9 litre v8 , it was just a really nice car that cruised without effort and the A/C was icy , sure it didn't have a fancy stereo or elec windows but the way it just wafted along on its Olympic Uniroyals was superb.
I had it tagged as my second car and sadly it went up in flames. I was 18 and just loved that car so much so that Dad handed me the keys occasionally. That car for me will never be beaten .its a personal thing.

Lincoln Continental MKIV and Jaguar XJS are the 2 that I've worked on and driven.
Hard to fault them in average driving conditions. Wouldn't like to be parking the Lincoln in todays rice rocket car park spaces though. Comment re the WB Statesman I'd agree with also. |

Just love the ZL Fairlane....
Its like sitting in a nice lounge chair... Has all the mod cons you need with no added BS It doesn't have a V8 but still cruises the limit with its smooth 4.1 EFI

Look at any 1970's Jag with Lucas electronics, by your reckoning no Jag of that era was a luxury car. It seems that yet again if another poster disagrees with your idea they are wrong.

A luxury car has to cause envy otherwise it is a fail... so a rolls-royce front end, plenty of chrome, a bonnet mascot and a fancy glass roof are all essential items.

Bloody Chinese companies copying everyone else's design. I find that behaviour abhorrent and would not spend a cent supporting them.

no...he's asking everyone Their opinion! Try separating your preconceived ideas of someone every time they write a post!
My thoughts.? Plenty of power but only a few basic luxuries. I don't want to drive an iPhone......I'm driving it for its comfortable performance......not the gizmos! |

So what you're saying is a Rolls or Bentley would only be luxurious until a critical mass of people buy one, then suddenly it ceases to be luxurious?

Two elements I'd consider a luxurious drive, a smooth racing track and long straights to relax between the corners.

The point holds true for any car that is luxurious, those were just examples that were designed to highlight the point. What changes when the car hits the critical mass of purchasers to suddenly make it non luxurious any more? The answer nothing... it's still luxurious even though other people own it. It becomes less exclusive when more people buy it not less luxurious.

The topic title is about the elements of a luxurious drive. Not about appearance, or 'status'. To me the drive needs to be ultra quiet inside, firm but comfortable suspension (no wallowing), steering with just the right amount of feel and feedback, and effortless power to get moving, a great audio system wouldn't go astray either. |
