1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (Machine Head or Made In Japan versions)
2. Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
3. Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix (Could have easily gone with Purple Haze)
4. And The Cradle Will Rock - Van Halen (although there are several others by them)
5. Layla - Derek & The Dominos
6. Slow Ride - Foghat
7. All Right Now - Free
8. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
9. La Grange - ZZ Top (Once again several to pick from by this band)
=10. 20th Century Boy - T Rex (Bolan Just Boogies)
=10. Bad To The Bone - George Thorogood And The Destroyers

You wanna talk 'Lead Breaks' or solos then:

1. Eruption
2. Guitar Duel from the movie 'Crossroads'.

I would agree with a number of the songs mentioned throughout this thread. However I wouldl iek to add The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army to the list, in fact, a lot of their songs have great riffs. Simplistic, but great.

I can list 100 songs.

There is a CD (box set) which has the top 100 guitar riffs. Very good collection for anyone who loves the guitar.

Based on licensing and which songs they were allowed/could afford to include. It's a bit like 'Best BBQ Songs' type CDs and there's a friggin' Milli Vanilli track right between Cold Chisel and The Kinks........

Almost all of Ritchie Blackmores riffs in the band "Rainbow" with Dio. In Deep purple, I would class highway star and Black night as way better riffs than SOTW, but hey, thats me...

Although Pink Floyd were more musically "atmospheric" orientated, they did have some great riffs. Waiting for the worms, Time, wish you were here... etc etc.

Judas priest, breaking the law
Queensryche - Queen of the Ryche
Warrior - Fighting for the earth
W.A.S.P - I wanna be somebody
Twisted Sister - Come out and play, under the blade, You cant stop rock and roll, Burn in hell....
The Animals - House of the rising sun, dont let me be misunderstood
Black Sabbath - N.I.B, After Forever, Black Sabbath, War Pigs
Metallica - Well, everything before load was insanely great guitar riffing.

Sepultura - Roots, Arise, Chaos A.D
Pantera - Cowboys from hell, Walk, Mouth of war

Also for those who can handle a bit more than the average band,
Dark Funeral - Secrets of the black arts
Satyricon - Dawn of a new age
Dimmu Borgir - kings of carnival creations..

All in no order, but these are prob my fav guitar riffs of a selected bunch of bands.

Yes, I am a guitarist :P

i'm really surprised that nobody has said ace of spades by motorhead yet. so good.
Cream - sunshine of your love
I'm also willing to throw in Iron Maiden - Run to the hills
anything by AC/DC.
motley crue- hell on high heels, dr feelgood (a bass riff this time, so good)
i'm sure all the good zeppelin songs are already mentioned
and the rest i like so no point reiterating the point.

Dave Stewart with Candy Dulfer - Lily Was Here. Nothin but sax & guitar.
Andy McKee - Drifting is pretty good, here's a link to his vid.

I'd get a couple of guys come in & one would do his version (full blast of course) & his mate would say " Naa , that's wrong , here I'll show ya " Mmm another version , another guy would say "Aww ya both wrong " Etc. Etc. I had to be nice about it as they were my Living .

One Music Shop in Sydney years ago had a BIG sign " When playing guitars DON'T Play "Smoke on The Water & Stairway To Heaven" , I think it was called Harry Landis Music .

Sorry to go O/T , now back to Topic

XRchick = Yep , Fleetwood Mac (love most of their stuff)As Long as You Follow is my latest choice .
XR6 Martin = Yep , November Rain

One I Really like (but not well known) Snowy White = Bird Of Paradise

Geesh , showing my age now , but I amaze my Kids , they'll be playing something and I'll "That's cool " , apparently Dads aren't allowed to like their music . Lol ,only thing I can't handle is "Techno" (oops Flame suit on Hahah)

Norm
Yeah, I can see that happening, I'm starting to get sick of it as well but it will always be a classic riff. As for stairway to heaven I don't reckon the riffs that spectacular, just an awesome song.

I agree with Mutter, and also Spiel Mit Mir. Simplicity and so awesome.
Also as HLC said Hammer smashed face (chorus) - Cannibal Corpse
And I think a worthy mention is The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson
