Kilometres don't kill cars , drivers do
I have a BA XR6 in immaculate condition 4 airbags , leather with 285,000 KM with the original transmission
The car is a peach
It will do another 100,000KM with out a problem because I look after it

We also recently sold a 99 Mitsubishi Verada wagon
217,000 KM - possibly the best car we have ever owned
Regularly serviced , always garaged, washed & polished

We put it on car sales and the first people that saw it bought it KM's were never mentioned by the buyers as it was irrelevant after they inspected and test drove the car

Well of course you "can" buy a car with 162000... or did you mean "should"?

162000km is bugger all.

Yeah I dunno why it bothers me. Not my car, not my money..

Maybe I'm the mrs mangles of the ford community.

But we all like to assess other peoples decisions, Two tests that suggest to me my neighbours decision was iffy...

1. If you go to a tuner, let's say bluepower or herrods with a 162000km xr8 (or any ford), then ask them to bolt on a kenne bell blower (or similar), they would think twice. But under 100,000km they wouldn't have any reservation. There has been a few threads about this where tuners just about turn cars away due to the km and associated risk of failure.

2. Go to a car dealer with 162000km and see what sort of trade in they give you. Probably just remove you from their yard. Then look in their yard, any car over 150,000km they don't offer any warranty.

I'm not saying cars are no good with these km if you own them and take good care, you put the km on yourself, but buying one with those sorts of km, really chancing your arm, good price but rocks or diamonds.

Aw, You've have taken your own thread fully off topic Hulk. The thread is entitled "Can you buy a car with 162000km" I dunno how to interpret that - I don't understand complex questions.

Yeah I dunno why it bothers me. Not my car, not my money..

Fully agreed.

Maybe I'm the mrs mangles of the ford community.

Yup.

But we all like to assess other peoples decisions, Two tests that suggest to me my neighbours decision was iffy...

I don't give a rats *** about what other folk do, unless they hurt my family. I don't "test" people either.

Most folk don't think of that when they're buying a car. How silly of them.

2. Go to a car dealer with 162000km and see what sort of trade in they give you. Probably just remove you from their yard. Then look in their yard, any car over 150,000km they don't offer any warranty.

Car dealers don't give a **** about you, they just want the coin.

I'm not saying cars are no good with these km if you own them and take good care, you put the km on yourself, but buying one with those sorts of km, really chancing your arm, good price but rocks or diamonds.

Yawn!

Bought a 95 Hi lux 2 mths ago @ 313000 km , really , really nice condition . Tight as a drum hasn't used a drop of oil and goes well for a 2.4 with 80 kw .

I have had cars purchased at 58 k , 72k , 106k , 143 k in the last 20 years , all with log book history and a good inspection report . All bar one have cost me money over and above normal servicing costs in the time of ownership . All where what I would consider v.g.c for their age . No guarantees unless you know the seller personally .
I can just imagine Hulks ad , never dragged , only ever driven to a bbq on sundays . Lol

Plenty of people in this thread have said they bought cars with 250000 or 300000km and they are as tight as a drum?

Have these members ever driven a new car? I think I can tell the km of a car just by looking over the car in 2 minutes.

I have 4 cars with different amounts of km. all are in perfect condition but you could literally put them in order of best condition to worst and it would align to the lowest amount of km to the highest. Trust me I take awesome care of my cars but you could still tell which car had the least km.

Yes. Porsche boxster s, jeep wrangler sport, ba xr8, .... Only just bought the jeep and still own the boxster. I drive the EF wagon with 565,000km on the clock a fair bit because it's nice to drive after the work I've done on it.

I think the main reason higher k's effects cars is trade-in/resale values(a 40 000k car will always demand more money than the 100 000k + ones) but as said imo it depends how it's maintained/looked after

I found another example why a high klm car can be as good or better than a lower klm car......

I have a VH SLE for sale I want 15k for it it’s got 84000 original ks on the clock. (Joke about selling it but I think the Speedo stopped working at 84000 ks)

Don’t judge a book by its cover as the old saying goes.

Hulk gets burnt by his old posts too much, I think.

Can't believe there hasn't been a mention of cylinders in this thread yet.

I mean after all....

"We all know" that less cylinders wear out faster and simply can't go as far as more cylinders.

I have a BAII Xr6t. Had about 149,000km when I got it-18 months ago.
Now has 157k.
K's are low for age, considering 'average' used to be 20k per year.
I think it will sell ok when I put it up next month. Its best asset is it hasn't been molested.
Only Mandarin XR6T with every factory option available.
The downside, its low km prob meant it spent time parked...outside. I think the factory fade mandarin actually look cool. Most people see it and ask how much it cost to paint it like that.

So yes-you can buy low km cars.

Yes-take each one on its merits. Mods are great, but stock is great too.

I bought an AU2 SR 4 years ago with 172k on it, one elderly owner and in immaculate condition.
Drove it for 2 years and sold it to my nephew with 218k's on it.

In the last two years he has put 40k's on it and it is now a wreck, I cringe when I see it.

I bought my TJ VRX with 163k's and it too is immaculate as it was looked after by the previous owner.
The paint is immaculate, which is rare for a Magna of that era. The trim is unmarked, except for slight wear on the leather gear knob. The engine runs like clockwork and uses no oil and is whisper quiet.
In the 12 months I've had it I've serviced it 3 times, replaced an engine mount and the 2 seals for the heater core which I now believe was already leaking when I bought it 12 months ago and cost me $60 to fix.
It will need a water pump and timing belt at the end of the year, but those are standard replacement items.

The moral of the story is that K's mean bugger all, it is how a car presents and has been maintained that matters.

Hulk, all jokes aside, have you thought about starting a business for helping people decide which car to buy. To have the ability to look over a car in two minutes and be able to correctly diagnose the Kms travelled is amazing. Think in terms of potential speedos being wound back.

I have owned nine cars in my life of which four were brand new and five were second hand. I guess I have been lucky as there were no lemons amongst them.

My two current cars (refer sig) were bought with 142,000km and 224,000km on the clock, now have 169,000km and 248,000km respectively. The 28y/o BMW is a pleasure to drive (supershifty can verify this having done 4,000km in it with me).

What amazes me is why you think that horsepower is everything in regard to your comment about blowing the motors etc. Both my cars are in line sixes and naturally aspirated. I would hazard a guess that at anything longer than a quarter mile race, my sixes would leave you for dead. Not that they are more powerful but the fact that I have spent a lifetime trying to perfect my driving skills in various forms of motorsport, refreshing my defensive / advanced driving skills on a yearly basis etc. Both engines run around 240bhp - 250bhp at the fly wheel bit I can use about 99% of this 99% of the time. Your supercharged XR8, can you say the same thing?

When someone I know buys a new car (goes for second hand as well), I will always try to see the good in their decision and not cast my own values on their choices. I congratulate you on the fact that you have four cars and can afford the upkeep on them and their modifications. Some people are not in this position.

Cheers Vincenzo
