So what this survey is saying is that Holden is the car of choice for 17 year old kids. Young people who have never driven before, never had to maintain a vehicle and are basing their choice on peer pressure agreed "fully sicness", choose Holden.

What will the next survey show? The sky is blue? Water is wet?

My first car was a Holden because all my mates' cars were holdens and there was a holden wrecker close for cheap parts. It was a HK 161 bought in 1976 on which I spent a fortune modding, I swapped it for a Kawasaki Mach 3.
My last Holden was a 253 auto HZ I sold in 1982 as I could not afford to keep fixing it.

Well chances are if it was a new passenger car, it would be a Holden, going by the sales figures.

25% of the males population go holden first = 12.5% of population
15.5% go ford = 7.8% of population.

Current purchase spread: Toyota =22%, Holden 12.1%, Ford 10%.

So the gain to Ford would be at the expense of brands other than Holden.

Of course those figures would be skewed by adding in the unkown female holden and ford purchases.

In a country that is decidedly more Holden then Ford, those stats aren't remotely interesting. We all know that there are more Holden loyalists than they are Ford Supporters. Just like there are more Villains than Super heroes, or Politicians than Brains between them...

The article does and it is still in favour of Holden!

I couldn't find anything in the article about the IQ test that should have gone with the survey...

Might have your wires crossed there ltd. "Bambi" and his assorted forest friends aren't going to strip GM of foreign assets unless they are sucking GM North America under. Holden is (just) self sufficient at the moment. I'll leave it at that because i don't want to go off topic any further, but basically, North American operations are most at risk from Bambi's razor gang.

As for the first car, I had a HQ which copped some serious abuse (including river water when I had a leaking radiator :togo: ). Eventually it was nicked but I doubt they got very far

Haven't owned a Ford yet, but it seems to get closer by the day. My wife will be dragging me kicking and screaming!

Well there you go then.

I guess there is also the supply and demand factor. With more holdens sold from new there would be more second hand ones to choose from than ford. There's also the issue of car retention, where dad or mum's car gets handed down to the kids and therefore doesn't show up as a loan on Bankwest's books.

Really the article is stating the bleeding obvious, but at least the government didn't commission it and spend $10m paying consultants.

There was an article in today's Courier Mail (page 72) about Ford gearing up for a marketing campaign. The author points out that current promotion hasn't matched the product; in other words, brand awareness has been lagging.

That is something Ford really needs right now. Aside from the accommodation (I'm 6'6" so the steering adjustment really ****es me off), it's a pretty solid effort. Perhaps they need to really belt out the fact that it now has the same fuel economy as the Camry and can pull more than an Aurion, plus it doesn't doesn't come with a free cardigan like the other 2.

My first car was a 1978 Leyland Mini S.
998cc's of heart stopping power..NOT :P

My 2nd car was my Dad's 84 Corona wagon and my 3rd car was a 1973 Volvo 145 wagon (courtesy of Dad's influence again). Which to this day is the biggest bucket of crap I've ever had. :

I've owned 1 Holden which was my 4th car. I did the bogan VL thing for a couple of years. I actually chose that car myself.
Then in 1997 I got the offer of a 1994 KHII Laser from my Dad. It was a no brainer and I quickly said bye bye to the VL. : That laser was a great car. I still miss it. I like having a Falcon but wish it was a BA or newer. But for the moment, the AUII is fine.

Most first cars buyers buy a heap of junk that they can only just afford with very little money, so a Holden is the most logical choice.

My first car was an Escort and I've been a fan of the euro Fords ever since, and we will probably allways have a small Ford in the Family but I don't think I will ever own a Falcon, they don't make me happy when I drive them plus I have a self impossed 1499kg limit when buying a car and I can't see them getting back there anytime soon

So Holden wins in first car choice. Just proves teenagers aren't suitably mature to drive.

They also 'win' in most often wrapped around poles/trees, and most often confiscated under hoon laws. How come they're not shouting those stats from the mountain tops?

Judging from the ads by Holden from early last year just before the FG went on sale, till now, Holden have virtually " given" there cars away. So anyone who wanted a "cheap" car would probably have taken the opportunity to grab one, hence the reason Ford was out sold. Well that,s the way i see it anyway..

Allow me to explain, Pres. Bambi gave GM two options; either file for bankruptcy and close or reform. This reform he spoke of called for the immediate termination of GM's CEO Rick Wagoner, and the installation of Fritz Henderson. They also gave GM a deadline to demonstrate that they could be viable and/or find a buyer. GM has failed to deliver any of these requirements and ergo the administrators are preparing to liquidate the business. Even good old Fritzy has said it is more than probable that GM will enter bankruptcy, as the energy industries loans and/or endorsements have not materialised for GM, but have for ford.

I don't see how this article is "bad news" for Ford at all. If its bad news for Ford wouldn't it be disastrous news for VW, Mazda, BMW ect? No, because its a puff piece probably sponsered by Holden marketing. Bankwest ran this survey (of a whole 1200 people)....basically its statistically irrelevant.

Car manufacturers make money off new cars not clapped out 10 year old cars that first time buyers buy. The Commodore leading this race simply means it is cheaper for these buyers and more freely available.

I was given my first car - a Corolla - I highly doubt many 16/17 year olds can 1) afford a new Ford or Holden or 2) Know enough about cars at that age to make an informed decision.

Yeah, I had a Holden for my first car - a Barina. You couldn't hear that thing standing next to it, let alone before it was in sight... you could smell the clutch a mile away though

ever noticed that most holden drivers / fans are uneducated bogans that have a maximum of 5 teeth in their whole mouth that are constant P*SS heads and HRT or HSV with rips are the only shirts they own. i actually have noticed that more ford drivers are just a tad upper class and i really am not being bias. i can swear on that.

They're just a random sample, and their stats don't add up. For example:

"But when it came to their current car, almost one in four Australians bought a new car while one in six chose a used car."

So of 100 people, 25 buy new, and 17 buy used - what about the other 58? I guess they just steal it off someone else.

With maths like that, it's no wonder Holden came out on top.
For the record, my first and second cars were both Nissans (1200 then 1600), followed by a Holden (HG wagon), a few Fords (XE to EF), another Holden (VS2), and more Fords (EL, AUs, NF).

Because that is not the point of the article. It is merely the result of a survey.

They have already shown the stats for deaths on the road. It is a known fact that males aged 18-24 are killed most often. It's been released in the media that often, I'm sure we're all sick of hearing it.

Holden is in the media far often than Ford, and many young people are dependent on the media to be told what they should like and do.

I'm a Holden fan, but no..I can't say I fit that description you speak of. I'm well educated actually.

My first car was a Cortina, but it wasn't my choice. Good car though.
