I know personally. I work on the front-line in servos myself. And this is our (and other chains) policy. A sample. A receipt. or no go. We need proof that it was our fuel that caused damages to the car. Otherwise it could be anybody's fuel, from any servo. On a personal note, its funny how people think E10 is the only problematic fuel. I got ULP from my local servo that just had its tanks replaced around 6 months prior. I fuelled my bike, and not long after it started running rough, and wouldnt do what I wanted, drained fuel, emptied float bowls and lines (refilled with the same petrol ) tried it again. No dice. Went to work that night, grabbed some from ULP from my site, put it in, ran like a cut snake after that. Ooooooooh look at that! A plain ULP disaster story! Is this a troll post?

There isn't anything inherently wrong with running E10. As long as the fuel system has E10 safe components and the ECU can adjust timing accordingly, there is no issue (apart from the economy hit of around 10%). Geddit, E10
As for the matter of how ethanol is made, that is another question altogether and a discussion could run into the tens of pages. Last edited by Trump; 23-06-2015 at 07:58 AM. |

Ethanol doesn't seperate from unleaded, unless water is introduced. Then the ethanol floats on top of the petrol and water. This is done in laboratory conditions to test the correct ratio of E10. If there is a problem in the loading gantry and the wrong percentage of ethanol is injected into the compartment of unleaded. You get a print out from the computer and are grounded till tests are done. And depending on the size of the tank at the servo and how much e10 is already there you either have to pump it into a storage tank or it is within tolerances. Which for your information is between 8% and 10% to be called e10.

When ya mechanic can't work it out, blame the fuel.
If you had 'bad batch of fuel', then expect to replace more than a pump. So based on your mechanic's lack of knowledge or motivation, it is suggested that we don't use E10? Maybe go back to your mechanic and ask him to actually find the fault or cause!

Last year I was stupid enough to fill at a 'Supermarket servo' just after the tanker finished dropping fuel. Shortly after the car ran like a dog I showed the sample to the manager, filled out servos customer form with the time of day, type of fuel (98) and receipt . Also mentioning that my mechanic was prepared to write a report on the fuel. A week or so later I get, what is probably a standard letter from the area rep, saying pretty much what I expected. That their fuel is constantly tested and is of the highest standard. In other words, forget trying to blame us as we're not reimbursing you for the fuel ($80), the filter ($160) or the mechanics time ($75). But, seeing as I couldn't actually prove it was their fuel I knew it wasn't worth taking it further.

................. I've used E10 (95 stuff from United) for many years and the economy was as good as the 95 stuff from BP. BP ulitmate gave me about 40km's better economy. I Have noticed that 95 E10 in the Fg wasn't that good but in the BF it was fine.

A lot of servo's around our way are now asking if you want a receipt rather than automatically issuing one. A couple of times I have said no but now I make it a policy to ask for one because bad fuel can cost you a lot of money. Its good to have the proof of purchase just in case!

I'm thinking now i should have gotten the RACV emergency car around before just jumping straight into getting a tow truck.
Emergency guy may have been able to get car started buy pouring some fresh fuel in??? Too bloody late now!!!! |

Prob wouldve been cheaper for the OP as well to take it to the RACV depot/mechanic instead of wasting $300 on the tow to his mechanic. but prob be bit more inconvenienced though.

In an underground tank the fuel pick up hose isn't right on the bottom. So say there is 500 lt left, the pumps won't work as the fuel level is too low. When a tanker makes a delivery all the sludge off the bottom gets stirred up. Wait at least 30 mins before purchasing fuel. Fuel is of the highest quality. We know if the fuel is bad long before you even purchase the fuel. Tanks are dipped for water each morning before opening.

Im going to make an assumption here.
United servo, calls it the "cheap 91 stuff". Car runs for a bit and then stops. Im going out on a limb and saying you've put e85 in....

Been running our car on E10 since we bought it brand new back in 2008, not a single issue, never been a problem.
Any fuel can cause dramas when dirty, nothing to to with the fact that it was E10

It's not their fault they think the Earths flat, they put E10 in their car once and it won't start anymore so they can't drive far enough to see it goes round..

I've decided that i will keep using E10 as there are some great comments in this thread that have re assurred me the fuel is o.k to use. And if my car wont start again next time it happens i will be pouring some fresh fuel in thats for sure! |

Haha fair enough, was worth a wild guess. Fwiw, 2 x au, 1 x ba, and a focus all on e10, no issues, the fg on e85 (tuned for it) no issues. Used it since 2004 non stop.

We ran the V8 explorer on E10 for around 12 months, because it is/was around 10 cents cheaper than PULP95 (our local servo doesn't sell any normal ULP91). Problem is, we started to get worse and worse economy, to the point of 22 l/100km. Switched to PULP95, and we now get around 19l/100km. That's 3 litres, or $4.50 per 100km better off if they were the same price @$1.50 per litre, but even at 15c dearer, the PULP95 works out at a saving of $1.35 per 100km, or I could use PULP98 for the same fill cost, and get an extra 40 to 50km per tank. So E10 is a false economy when it comes down to it - for our Explorer at least.

I'm in two minds as there alot of good comments in this thread praising E10. And ye i suppose i could have got a bad batch of any type of fuel not just E10. I reckon i will use again and see how it goes. At least i will remember next time if the car does'nt start that it could be bad batch of fuel. |

As a related problem, I recently filled up with 98 octane and water in my ZD Fairlane. Ran very roughly all the way home but upon draining the carby and replacing the Z14 inline fuel filter it ran sweetly again. Had I have been in a modern efi car, would it have stopped running altogether or can a modern fuel filter keep out a large amount of water from the fuel system?

Partly fill with E10 and Premium 95 over several fuel ups to give the fuel system time to clean itself and then fit a new fuel filter. After then, go full E10 mix. I was thinking that there is more water in your tank than you realise. |

Of course if you have half a tank of water all bets are off. Just buy a litre or so of acetone from you local hardware and add to you tank next refuel. You could also add some ethanol to you 98 or just mix in some e10 and it will help to clean you tank. Peter |

I have a small fleet of petrol vehicles ranging from a GQ Patrol to a XR6 Turbo. The Patrol hates E10 but my R50 Pathfinder loves it. The XR6T doesn't mind the 95 octane stuff but runs better on 98 and the na XR6 thinks E10 is alright. I have run various cars with high mileages on E10 over the last 20 years and if they run ok on it I have used it exclusively. Fuel injectors, combustion chambers and fuel systems are always spotless when engines use E10 and I too miss United 100 octane.
I don't understand the constant whinging about ethanol fuel absorbing water. Petrol is hydroscopic by itself and what do you pour into your tank to break up water contaminated fuel? Methylated spirits that's what and that's all ethanol is, just metho. As long as my car(s) run ok on E10 and above I'll use it in preference to LPG. |

All my cars are forced induction .. WRX's, TT Windsor EB to GTE .. I fill with E10 then top up with 98 .. Next fill I do the other way around..
I would say you had a tank with water in it.. With the weather we've had lately ..

Check the list form the FCAI.
http://www.fcai.com.au/environment/c...l-blend-petrol It depends on what your expectations are, some are happy to use it even with the reduction in economy however in using it unless you can prove the fuel is at fault then you are on your own, particularly with an older car. One point to keep in mind is bad fuel was an issue before E10 was introduced. Better to ask in the AU BF section of the forum as you are more likely to receive a reply from an owner with a similar vehicle rather than some of the anecdotal statements here that are irrelevant. Good luck!
