I know who Ion was, thats why i asked the question.

Not sure where you're getting your information from but all alloytec's manufactured in Australia are built in Port Melbourne - regardless if Holden can keep up with demand or not.

With the fuel price expected to hit $2 by the end of the year, I can see the Focus selling very very well along with any other small car models and bugger all sales of larger capacity engine models. If smaller car models sell better in the future due to fuel efficiency then perhaps the car manufacturers may take on more workers. It all may be just a transient period with the lay off of workers at this moment.

This Holden loss of 500 jobs, with almost no redeployment. Media blip. Nothing. Previous job losses resulting in thousands. Nothing. Media's favourite.
There will be next to no redeployment for the Focus program, as the engine plant shuts in 2010 and the Focus isn't due until 2011. Maybe a few production engineers but thats it.

Ion did win the 'contract' to cast the alloytech blocks & heads for GM but it all fell through. The blocks & heads are imported, mainly from Canada & Mexico for assembly in Port Melbourne.
