haha funny story
My mate made a myspace profile for his cat, just as a joke and people think it is a real person. His cat is a girl and her name is missy, and you would not believe the messages he gets sent. I remember 1 from a dude who was a lawer in america and he sent a huge description of himself and at the end it said, "you seem like the type of girl for me, I would love to meet you". I know this seems like I am contradicting myself, but being a male, my myspace experience is going to be different t a girl. However if you do let her on you will be the 'bestest daddy in the world' and so on. |

If she was outgoing already and had lots of friends then I would. Yes I'd have to keep an eye on it, and look for changes in attitude and behaviour - too much crap in papers not to be wary. Our school has run specific parent info sessions and workshops on this - wouldn't be a bad idea for every school to do.
If she was more reserved and intense then I'd think twice. Ask her to show me some similar Myspaces that she had in mind, if she wants a site bad enough she should be able to sell you on it or she doesn't really want it enough. Seems to be the done thing. I was even reading about a truckie who posted a vid resume of his skills and now has 6 firm job offers. |

MSN yes providing you know whats going on, if they have 300 contacts on their list then id be a little sus, providing they arent on chat rooms giving their msn address out to people you wont have any worries, kids usually have it from 14 onwards and mainly use it to talk to school friends, it can be a good tool but dont let them live on it...
As for the other no, MYSPACE is bullshit... I cant believe the amount of people hooked on that ...

Id rather let them use myspace than msn. That way you can log on to the net and see there website and what it says unlike msn which is rather hard to monitor

MSN is easy to monitor if you have them setup in a room where you can walk past them every 10 minutes, as i say most kids will have 30 - 40 contacts (usually their class), if they have 300 then you start to get a bit sus about who maybe on there..

Thanks to myspace i have caught up with a few primary school friends i had before i move to the Latrobe valley (Around 9 years ago) As for Messages, they are only as harmfull as the person takes them, if your Son/Daughter gets a Message like that delete/block the person, delete the message and no harm done. Just make sure your kids feel comfortable letting you know if anything like that happened. |

I don't get the myspace fad either... it's all talking in that sms speak rubbish, and they all just try to make themselves look better. Those guys who tormented that girl in Werribee were using their myspace page to brag about their actions, before the page was locked.

I know thats a bit harsh but the people saying that all a girl needs to do is block the messages/user/whatever are missing the point, if it was as simple as that the internet would be 100% safe. A 16yo girl that is getting constant messages from older guys is not going to catch every single weirdo out, and wont always agree with their parents about who is trying to get into their pants and who isn't. Although i'm sure they would disagree, at that age they just don't have the experience that their parents have. |

Mate, if she's wanting to be on myspace, keep an eye out for 'emo' or 'scene' like tendancies.

its a parents choice. If you want to block MSN. Try this.
MSN Messenger communicates with the .NET Messenger service using either port 1863 for direct TCP connections or using HTTP using port 80. Network administrators can disable access to the .NET Messenger Services through their firewall: 1) Block outbound access to TCP port 1863. 2) Block HTTP access to messenger.hotmail.com. 3) Block HTTP access to webmessenger.msn.com if you also want to block access to MSN Web Messenger. I hope this makes sence....... As parents you have to take control. There are some really sick people (freaks) out there with computers.

On MSN you can adjust the options to log all conversations in a folder of your choosing and that way you can go in later and check on the content. I did it. I learned a lot from following the conversations. I got accused of being over protective of the girls by their mother. They're 19 and 21 now and they now agree with what I did, and thank me for it and will now admit the things they tried to get away with... that I caught and stopped. Our job is to protect the kids, whether they like it or not, until they can do it for themselves.

As much as there's sick people on the internet just remember those sort of people loiter around shops and such aswell.
I think its quite a different day compared to when the chatrooms were around. I used to have fun pwning freaks on that : Having said that MySpace is a load of crap but I would definitely have no concerns with MSN so long as you point out that they shouldn't disclose personal information unless they actually know that person. |

Okay, I'm 16, yes I'm a guy but i think i can provide some input.
I really think it depends on how much you educate your kid about it. Msn is totally fine, no worries at all, myspace, well you can set it to private. Just ensure she only adds friends. But yeah, both are great ways to stay in contact with your friends. I have a friend who dad monitors her msn and i think it's too far. It would drive me insane, i think if you can establish trust you should be fine. EDIT: Also, you'd be surprised on the amount of girls 2 years younger then me that put half naked photos online, i think that's really wrong |

I suggest locking children in their bedroom between the hours of 5pm and 7am.

Probly not at the age of 12-14, if I had kids Id monitor the amount of time they spend online. However even as they get older, Id like to think they'd develop some common sense and like people have said, not trust everyone.
I think msn, myspace, forums, etc are safe.. but if you dont know the person you're talking to in person, dont give out personal information. |

In my case, the only PC that the kids (when we have them) will be allowed to use will be in the open where either myself or my wife can easily monitor what they are doing without being too intrusive, say in the family/lounge room. At such a young age, kids should not have computers in their bedrooms due to the crud that is on all of the internet.

I am a 20 year old guy who has been using MSN for probly the past six years, i dont have any interest in Myspace.
My youngest sister just turned 18. I introduced her to MSN probly around the time she turned 16, this was fine. She now uses myspace alot and has her own page etc I dont like myspace one bit, MSN is good enough. I think you should consider letting her use MSN, but you dictate who she adds. As for Myspace, stay away from it. |
