Yeah i did it a few years ago out of interest.
What I found? Residential areas were a bit hit-and miss. Sometimes you'd drive down streets and streets and find nothing unsecured.

Mr Hardware's non-paranoia tips for wireless
1. name your wireless network something random that means nothing (don't use your name or house number or street or router manufacturer. my old networks were called things like black snake or green hat or nonsense stuff like that)
2. Use encryption. Anything will do, because chances are anyone who wants to hack in won't bother unless it's unsecured. It's like a lock on a door. Even if it's the worst lock in the world, it's still 98038350457 times better than no lock.
