I didn't think auto manufacturing would survive without protections and it didn't.

Of course, if there's another war in the pacific, we'll be ******, again.

Well if you look at it when we had high import tariffs on import cars we had huge support for Aussie cars. We are capable of building whatever shape and model car we need right here. As for people complaining about build quality, we'll build quality comes with higher volume and a bigger budget to develop the cars better. If we had maybe merged our tech and shared development cost with Ford US than we would probably had better built cars. I applaud the Japs and the Americans for putting themselves first. Why we ever wanted to make it easier for other countries to bring there products to Australia and not support our own manufacturing I will never understand. What happens when the rest of the world decides it wants to put the price of goods up and we have no choice but to buy.

If you want to get technical our locally produced cars are manufactured by foreign owned companies - Japan has their own native car industry which is a big part of their economy and they tend to protect it.

I bet they will pull out of Korea next and concentrate their efforts on other fast developing superpowers like India and China.
They might be neighbours, but the Koreans can't stand the Japanese. Plus they really do look after their own industries

Cant speak for Japan, but anyone been to Indonesia lately? Theres barely a car in fords global portfolio that would be suitable for that market, Mondeo, too big, kuga, too big, even focus is too large for Indonesia's roads. You can argue till you're blue in the face that fiesta is a great drivers car, but the indos roads are very crowded and speeds barely exceed 70kph.It is also too expensive.

Obviously Ford failed those markets by not exporting the Falcon to them.
Japan would have loved an Xr6 turbo.
Blow the pants off those tinny GTR's.
And a ute in Indonesia would have been a success.

Grassby was born in QLD, and was Irish and Spanish heritage. Not Italian

And good on him for saying we should never forget out heritage.
Anglos preach all this multicultural bs, but when push comes to shove they stab you in the back at the drop of a hat.

They would prefer an xr6t over a GTR??? Sorry but an xr6t isn't on the same level as a GTR

I dont think Ford will be pulling out of Aus anytime soon. They only sold 5000 cars in Japan in a year. They sell more than that a month here.

Believe me, I know..

Have gone to Korea almost every year for the past 10 years.

First time I went I thought it was so cute how they all make the peace sign (2 fingers in a V) in all their pics...

Till someone told me it represented V for Victory against the Japs

Indeed, and this action is the biggest indicator of what Ford will do with their remaining RHD market... Forget about Britain, they dominate there and their British operation stands on its own two feet quite well.

Exactly what is happening in China right now, hence what Trump has been on about and why American manufactoring is a giant slowly waking back up.

Multiculturalism started when Australia was initially colonised... Didnt turn out too well for the "Australians". Happened well before 1948.

And those that immigrated here (see the early settlers) and society currently still has the Queen as the head of state and our Flag has the Union Jack. If that isnt a hark back to the "old country", I dont know what is! So all Grasby was pointing out, when in Rome, hold on to your old country as the rest of the place obviously does... Dont tell someone to leave their culture behind when you haven't.

And this Australia day, I've seen enough cars with a "Australia - Love it or Leave" and the "Aussie Pride" stickers on imports all day! None of which were driven by multicultural Australia. Meanwhile, multicultural Australia was celebrating in a Aussie made cars... Go figure...

If we don't own the capital in our automakers, we don't get to decide on whether they stay. I propose we set up a special bank of the Commonwealth to secure domestic capital for...

....what, we did that in 1911? Where is it now? ...it's privatised now?! And borrows short duration on the international money markets to lend long duration into mainly Aussie real estate, wait... wtf?

Hi Method, Thanks for correcting me on this - I usually (always) double check facts before posting. I was probably confused with his profound Italian (Mafia?) connection...and fierce advocacy.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arch...-1111118782228
Quote:
According to former NSW assistant police commissioner Clive Small....Small said there was a longstanding connection between the Calabrian mafia and the Labor Party that went back to the 1960s and included the late federal MP Al Grassby.

Grassby was one of the most colourful and controversial figures in 1970s politics. He was immigration minister in the Whitlam government from 1972 to 1974 and was credited with introducing the policy of multiculturalism to Australia. But he has long been accused of having had links to the Calabrian mafia, which, it was claimed, funded his election campaigns.

After his death in 2005, former National Crime Authority investigator Bruce Provost revealed that Grassby had used political pressure to stop an investigation of his mafia links.

"People in the community should be concerned about the appropriateness of these relationships, which require thorough investigation and transparency," Mr Provost said.........
I will refrain from making further comment on this as it is not really relevant to the thread.

Only if you've been living under a rock.

The end of Falcon, and thus the closure of the Australian manufacturing plant, was always a matter of when, not if.

Well surprise surprise, look what happened.
I will happily resurrect this thread if and when my predictions come true.
Rubbish. I have magazine articles from the mid 80s saying the same thing.
