Congrats grandad :
Dunno what is worse though, having a kid at 17 or having your first kid at 45 like me. At least at 17 you can be a lot close to your kids, that is if you have family support. So give them all the support they need and be happy |

My daughter will have all the support she needs, As for the father, I took them both out to dinner the other night, he is 16 (unsure how far off 17 he is) but He does seem to be a nice kid with all the right intentions. The first question I asked of him when he got in my car was "Ford or Holden?" he said Holden, I said ok its time for you to get out now...lol, but seriously I think he has good intentions, just I don't see it lasting, but I hope I am wrong. I made sure he had my phone number in case things go sour and he needs to get in contact with my daughter. My daughter does not live with me or her mother (my ex) But that is her choice. The thing that the thread is about more than anything is me being a grandfather at 38, which I am currently 37 and will be 38 by the time the baby is born.

Don't let a "label" of grandpappy get stuck in your throat.
Whilst I understand the frustration of the young'un not being able to fully enjoy her youth and being forced to grow up now, your attitude is great (certainly better than mine would be), it's all about family and this is an addition to your family, your heritage, your legacy and no doubt you'll be very proud regardless of what they call you. Good luck to them, you and the soon to be, addition.

I think its good, like has been said, at least you will be able to enjoy them growing up. My mums going to be having her 2nd and 3rd grandkids this year, and she will be 44. Its good because the age gap between our generations isnt as significant as having a child when you are 37.

My parents are almost 60 now, and they shouldn't hold their breath waiting for grandkids.
I'm 25, but I still think I'm too young to even be considering having kids. But hey, if your daughter is sure that she wants to go through with it, then good luck to her. One of the girls I went to school with had a baby while the rest of us were doing the HSC, and I've just got in contact with her after 8 years and she says she wouldn't change a thing!

Hi Yaw,
My 21 year old brother-in-law has just had his first kid…with his 16 year old girlfriend. They have a long and uphill journey ahead of them but they are making a go of it but who know where they will be in 12 months time. I would have thought that my brother-in-law would have done a runner quite frankly because he has shirked responsibilty whenever someone has tried to put it on him BUT he has done so much growing up in the past year that I have to actually have to give him some praise…he's a dotting Dad and the primary care giver to this adorbale little daughter he has. His 16 year old girlfriend on the other hand has a 'I am a victim' attitude and hasn't coped all that well with motherhood and having to think about things other than herself (She is still a teenager after all) but she is getting better, particularly know that bubs is communcating a little in that way that bubs do and not just eating/sleeping and the other things. She doesn't have a great role model in her own mother which mean she had no idea how to do anything and then didn't listen when she was told. They go out and have a good time most weekends while the grandparents babysit (like normal parents do) but its interesting that many many friends have dropped off them now…their social circle is half what it used to be. The key for all the parents has been for them to be the support and safety net to these young parents and not yell or judge them. They need your support, your money, your patience and most importantly your time…..the reward though of being a close grandparent will be worth it in spades. |
